    about 46 per cent of the total greenhouse area 157 acres followed by floriculture at 41 per cent or 137 acres and tree seedlings at 13 per cent or 45 acres Greenhouse institutional facilities of approximately 3 56 acres are not included in the total area The greenhouse area in the province is divided into ten regions ranging from Region 1 Fort McMurray to Region 10 Lethbridge Compared to the 2010 survey results the maximum growth in greenhouse area occurred in the Medicine Hat area that includes Redcliff from 41 per cent in 2010 to 45 per cent in 2014 Area under 10 000 ft2 increased from 24 per cent in 2010 to 30 per cent in 2014 while area over 40 000 ft2 decreased to 32 per cent from 36 per cent in 2010 Double poly greenhouses accounted for about 85 per cent of total area followed by glass at 13 per cent Approximately 36 per cent of greenhouses are year round and 64 per cent are seasonal in nature The industry employs over 1 600 full time and over 2 500 part time workers Growers have used federal and provincial government programs to bring in foreign workers Natural gas continued to be the fuel of choice for heating greenhouses No major shift has occurred in the use of alternate fuel like coal wood or others Based on survey responses average heating cost in 2014 was estimated at 12 54 per sq m or 1 16 per sq ft This translates to total greenhouse industry heating expenditure of approximately 17 17 million While use of personal computers 57 per cent was similar to the 2010 survey results use of environmental control computers increased slightly Ninety three per cent of growers were aware of environmentally friendly crop management practices and

    bottom of this page Previously Awarded In the year 2000 the AGGA awarded 2 Scholarships of 500 00 one to Leanna Prins daughter of Ron Tena Prins of TR Greenhouse in Lacombe The other scholarship was awarded to Theresa Vis daughter of Andy Alice Vis of Sunshine Greenhouse in Red Cliff The ironic thing about these two are that they are both attending the same College Dordt College in Iowa USA In 2001 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were given to Danny Howard son of Jim Howard of Green Island Gardens in Fairview and to Martin Vlugt son of Bert Vander Vlugt of Aspen Greenhouses in Blackfalds In 2002 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Dirk Vis from Vis Greenhouses and Michelle Stigter of Stigter Greenhouses In 2003 one scholarship of 500 00 was awarded to Heather Zaleschuk daughter of Larry Zaleschuk of Blue Sky Gardens in Carseland In 2004 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Matthew Thiel son of Horst Thiel of Thiel s Greenhouse in Bruderheim and to Liam Taylor son of Bev Taylor of Summerset Greenhouses Ltd in Thorhild In 2005 one scholarship of 500 00 was awarded to Elly Doef daughter of Helen and Joe Doef of Doef s Greenhouses Ltd in Lacombe In 2006 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Jeffery Pancoast son of David Pancoast of Chinook Greenhouse 1990 Ltd in Medicine Hat and to Meghan Taylor daughter of Bev Taylor of Summerset Greenhouses Ltd in Thorhild In 2007 3 scholarships of 500 00 were awarded to Brad Fisher son of Terry Fisher of Sunwest Greenhouses in Redcliff Danja Verheul daughter of Michiel Verheul of High Q Greenhouses in Morinville and Amanda Stigter daughter of Harry Stigter of Stigters Greenhouses in Redcliff In 2008 one scholarship of 500 00 was awarded to Carson Pancoast son of David Pancoast of Chinook Greenhouses 1990 Ltd in Medicine Hat In 2009 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Rebecca Bouw daughter of John Bouw of Dentoom s Greenhouses in Red Deer and Darrell de Jonge son of Paul de Jonge of Broxburn Vegetables in Lethbridge In 2010 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Stacey Bos and Steffen Bos daughter and son of Dick Bos of Majestic Growers Ltd of Redcliff In 2011 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Christopher Rasimas and Stephen Rasimas sons of Ben Mary Rasimas of BMR Greenhouses Water Gardens in Beaumont In 2012 2 scholarships of 500 00 each were awarded to Kendra Verheul daughter of Michiel Verheul of High Q Greenhouses in Morinville and Rita Baumann daughter of Susi Baumann of Baumann s Flower House in Thorsby In 2015 2 scholarships were awarded to Lotte de Herdt and Tracy Maier HERB KNODEL AWARD The Herb Knodel Award is named for a Grower in the Medicine Hat area who began lobbying for greenhouse issues in the 1940 s He devoted a great deal of time

    crops industry Dr Mohyuddin Mirza announced the award and cited John Bouw s contributions John Bouw owner and president of Dentoom s Greenhouses grew up in Niagra Peninsula and graduated from Ontario Agricultural College in 1980 with a diploma in Horticulture For 10 years John managed greenhouses for Nova Corporation in Jofree Alberta In 1991 he purchased Dentoom s Greenhouses a wholesale and retail operation In 1994 he joined Proven Winners Group and proudly presented this new line to his Canadian customers John is a past president of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association and a current member of the Canadian Ornamental Plant Foundation and many other associations He put Alberta grown plant material on the map and supplies cuttings and seedlings to more than 800 professional growers across Canada Dr Mirza fondly remembered John as a young rookie working with him at Brooks when he moved to Alberta and how he built his business He has promoted the Alberta Greenhouse Industry at every level of his business Dietrich Kuhlmann presented the award GROWER OF THE YEAR 2006 There were two awards given out this year Michiel Verheul High Q Greenhouses Morinville AB and Ron Prins TR Greenhouses Lacombe AB Michiel started his greenhouse business as a bedding plant grower in the early eighties and then specialized in plugs He demonstrated an outstanding ability to integrate the demands of his customers and specialized production to meet their needs His business acumen is evidenced in continued expansion and high customer satisfaction His contribution to the Green Industry Show and Conference is tremendous He has found top quality speakers and brought them to Alberta so that all of us could benefit from them Ron Prins of TR Greenhouses in Lacombe grows tomatoes and cucumbers for Pik N Pak and for farmers markets He
