    will Why we are remembering Amnesty in our wills Bequests RRIFs and RRSPs Life Insurance Contact our Planned Giving Associate Disclaimer Gifts of Stocks and Securities Give a Gift in Memoriam Send a Special Occasion Gift Raise Money for Human Rights Tips for Raising Money Fundraising Q As Donate a car Update your monthly donor information Join Us About Us What we do Key Facts about Amnesty International How We Make A Difference Our Leaders Our Impact Governance Financial Information Work With Us FAQ Members Thank You Contact Us Home Our Work Get Involved Donate About Us Greece Improve hellish conditions for refugees on islands Saturday November 7 2015 16 10 A child sleeps in the open on the island of Kos September 2015 AI Eliza Goroya As weather worsens thousands of refugees and asylum seekers are facing inhumane conditions after arriving on the Greek Aegean islands following dangerous and life threatening journeys They are also at risk of violence by police and members of far right groups Thousands of refugees and asylum seekers including many children are being forced to wait for days to be registered by the Greek police with limited or no access to shelter food sanitation and medical treatment They have arrived to the Aegean islands following a dangerous and life threatening journey As weather worsens they find themselves sleeping outside before they can continue the journey to the Greek mainland and beyond Overloaded and under resourced coastguard police and local authorities are failing to cope with the dramatic increase in the numbers arriving on the Greek islands more than 619 101 since the beginning of 2015 A general lack of coordination and occasionally uncooperative local authorities have worsened the situation Islanders volunteers NGOs and aid agencies struggle to cover the enormous gap in humanitarian provision for refugees and asylum seekers On Lesvos the Greek island with the highest number of arrivals 353 145 as of 4 November Amnesty International witnessed up to 4 000 people including children and pregnant women exposed to inclement weather conditions for days as they waited to be registered by the police The refugees sleep outdoors in the informal camps of Moria and Kara Tepe where conditions are dire On other islands like Kos and Chios lack of any reception structures means that many refugees and asylum seekers have to sleep in tents in places such as parks and the port without having access to basic facilities Everyone is wet in shock shivering said one of the volunteers that tries to cover for what local state and EU authorities have failed to provide On several occasions riot police reportedly used tear gas and beat and kicked refugees and asylum seekers at the Moria camp on Lesvos In September Amnesty International witnessed a group of 15 to 25 people attacking refugees and asylum seekers on Kos Please send a fax email or letter to the prime minister Start with Dear Prime Minister and a sentence about yourself such as from where you

  • Iran: Narges Mohammadi requires urgent care | Amnesty International Canada

  • Saudi Arabia: Juvenile activist faces execution | Amnesty International Canada
    has now been upheld by appeal judges at the Specialized Criminal Court SCC and by the Supreme Court according to his family who have only just learned of the courts decisions The case was sent to the Ministry of Interior in August 2015 for the sentence to be implemented He is liable to be executed as soon as the King has ratified the sentence Ali al Nimr was sentenced to death on 27 May 2014 by the SCC in Jeddah for offences that included taking part in demonstrations against the government attacking the security forces possessing a machine gun and armed robbery The court seems to have based its decision on confessions which Ali al Nimr has said were extracted under torture and other ill treatment and has refused to look into this allegation Ali al Nimr had been arrested on 14 February 2012 when he was 17 years old and taken to the General Directorate of Investigations GDI prison in Dammam in the Eastern Province He was not allowed to see his lawyer and has said that GDI officers tortured him to make him sign a confession He was then taken to a centre for juvenile rehabilitation Dar al Mulahaza and was returned to the GDI prison in Dammam when he turned 18 Ali al Nimr is the nephew of a prominent Shi a cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al Nimr from al Awamiyya in Qatif eastern Saudi Arabia who was sentenced to death by the Specialized Criminal Court on 15 October 2014 Please send a fax or tweet to the king otherwise a letter Start with Your Majesty Describe who you are or from where you are writing to make your message unique Urge him to quash Ali Mohammed Baqir al Nimr s conviction and death sentence and ensure that he receives a fair trial in line with international law and standards and without recourse to the death penalty You are welcome to include Dawood al Marhoon and Abdullah al Zaher in your appeals Call on him to open an independent investigation into Ali al Nimr s allegation of torture and other ill treatment If you wish you could also remind him that Saudi Arabia is a state party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child which strictly prohibits the use of the death penalty for crimes committed by anyone below the age of 18 Urge his government to establish immediately an official moratorium on all executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia Send your appeals to His Majesty Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques Office of His Majesty the King Royal Court Riyadh Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Postage 2 50 Fax 011 966 11 403 3125 This via Ministry of the Interior and is hard to reach Twitter KingSalman Please send a copy to His Excellency Naif Bandir A Alsudairy Ambassador for Saudi Arabia 201 Sussex Drive Ottawa Ontario K1N 1K6 Postage 85 Fax
