    Haifa Auditorium on February 8 2014 This is a major event for BJM as it marks the company s return to Israel and the celebration of 65 years of friendship and bilateral relations between Canada and Israel as was noted in a speech by Joël Lion Consul General of Israel in Montreal during a press conference highlighting BJM s impending departure on tour The works that will be presented in Israel include Harry a piece created especially for the BJM dancers by the Israeli American choreographer Barak Marshall After Israel the company will fly to Europe where we will perform in Slovenia Italy Germany and France For this tour the company has benefited from the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec The Canada Council for the Arts and the Quebec Ministry of International Relations Francophonie and Foreign Trade It has also received generous support from the Azrieli Foundation the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal the Henry and Berenice Kaufmann Foundation and the Irving Ludmer Family Foundation January 29 2014 ISRAELI CULTURE A SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATION Impressed by its tour of Israel in June 2011 particularly the cultural effervescence of Tel Aviv and keen to expand relations with the Israeli community the company increased its efforts to create partnership opportunities This led in 2012 to Artistic Director Louis Robitaille inviting Israeli American choreographer Barak Marshall one of the most innovative and unique choreographers in contemporary Israeli dance to create Harry a mainstay of BJM s current repertoire In this piece created specifically for the talented BJM dancers Barak was inspired by the inner turmoil and clashes confronting mankind Life is a constant struggle in which we are continually faced with conflicts with regard to culture gender species he notes It was a real challenge for the artists

    piece is in the works there will be special events throughout the season and of course the calendar is already marked with many upcoming tours THE HEART OF THE COMPAGNY STRONG PERFORMERS AND ROOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION BJM is thrilled to welcome five news performers for this 41st season including Canadian dancers Daniel Alwell Kiera Hill Graham Kaplan Andrea Pena and Tara Williamson We are also delighted to have Cyrille de la Barre join us from France in the position of Ballet Master Photographs and brief biographies of these new members of BJM are available on the company s internet site at bjmdanse ca BJM is proud to be providing an internship for the coming season to young Quebec dancer Guillaume Michaud who has been with us since January offering this young performer a unique opportunity to observe and participate in the creative process and familiarize himself with the intensity of life on tour He will truly experience what it is to be a professional dancer This project is of tremendous importance to the company and is made possible by the eva von Gencsy scholarship that was established this past spring NEW CREATION Choreographer Andonis Foniadakis who comes to us from Greece will have the honour of creating the next piece in the BJM repertoire Initial work on the project will be done in October and November Andonis is an accomplished dancer a founder of his own company and a choreographer who has become a rising star in Europe He has been called on by prestigious companies that include the Martha Graham Dance Company the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet The BJM artistic team is very excited His work has been called bold and athletic adjectives that make him a perfect match for BJM The premiere will take place in the summer of 2014 Stay tuned THIS FALL IS HOT HOT HOT On September 21st at the Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts BJM will take part in a performance to mark the 50th anniversary of that great cultural institution The company will perform excerpts from choreographer Barak Marshall s Harry a work that was created for BJM s own 40th anniversary and has continued to enchant both critics and the public since The fall season will bubble over with performances in Quebec Ontario and the United States as well as at the 2nd annual Contact event on November 9 a private fundraising initiative of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal s Young Leaders with funds raised to support the Eva von Gencsy Scholarship The second half of the season will again take our fine dancers on tour to the United States and then to Israel Slovenia Italy Canada Germany and finally France for a season that will total some 60 performances Evening programs will include the two very demanding works by Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto Zero in On and Fuel Benjamin Millepied s sublime Closer the underground piece Night Box by Canadian Wen Wei

    to joining BJM She trained at the Richmond Academy of Dance and The Banff Centre Instensive Program Tara has danced title roles in Romeo and Juliet Carmen and Cinderella See our calendar to discover BJM s next shows and have a chance to watch those new five dancers along the rest of the company June 10 2013 Presentation of the new artists who joined the company Born in Vancouver Kiera Hill began her formal dance training at Arts Umbrella under the direction of Artemis Gordon As a member of the Arts Umbrella Dance Company she performed works by James Kudelka Emily Molnar Aszure Barton Lesley Telford Gioconda Barbuto and Wen Wei Wang among others In 2011 she was proud to receive the British Columbia Arts Council Scholarship for excellence in dance Last season Kiera was an apprentice with Ballet BC in Vancouver where she had the opportunity to collaborate and perform extensively with the company June 6 2013 Presentation of the new artists who joined the company Today we present you Andre Peña from Bogota in Colombia She began training at Ballet Anna Pavlova and continued her studies in Vancouver with ProArte before graduating from Alonzo Kings Lines Professional Training Program in San Francisco Also training with American Ballet Theatre Cuban National Ballet Rome Opera Toronto Dance Theatre and attending The Banff Center s Professional Development Program Andrea previously worked with Ballet BC in Vancouver under Emily Molnar Vancouver City Dance Theatre and has recently been working independently with Project20 Throughout her career she has had the pleasure of working with choreographers Johan Inger Alonzo King Aszure Barton Robert Glumceck Walter Matteini Jose Navas Simone Orlando Christopher House Yannis Adoniou Warren Conover Beverly Baggs Greg Dawson and Donald Sales June 6 2013 Presentation of the new artists who joined the
