    your message with your members and get them on board early The employer Your bargaining strategy can be a secret but your message shouldn t be Have a message directly targeted to the employer What do you want them to know about your priorities and your values The public Unions are rightly preoccupied with achieving a fair deal for their members But achieving that fair deal can be a whole lot easier if the public is standing with you Your message should let the public understand how supporting your members will impact their lives If you re a public sector union how does your members work affect the community Are you fighting for improved public services Will your bargaining asks result in better and safer public services If you re a private sector union will your bargaining asks deliver more jobs to your community How do your members wages contribute to the local economy Are you fighting for a basic principle that all workers could benefit from Tapping into the public s awareness of the 2013 train derailment tragedy in Lac Mégantic QC that killed 47 people Teamsters Canada highlights the risk of unsafe rail conditions and improper regulation of the rail industry in its video 4 Don t make it all about you The best way to get someone s attention quickly is to talk about them If you want your message to cut through you need to talk about your issues in a way that will make people listen make them feel something make them see that what we are talking about relates to them and their families You are stronger when you talk about ordinary people and the values we care about like security family fairness and respect Use too many technical legal terms and acronyms and your audience will get lost or bored Grab your audience s attention by speaking directly to them about the things they care about and make sure they know you care too Connect with your members and the public on shared values beliefs and experiences Talk family dignity respect opportunity and fairness People will be more inclined to listen to your message if it s about the broader public interest and not just your self interest Our video for the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union explains the value of the union from the public s self interest 5 Keep it simple Your bargaining message should be composed of several succinct and memorable statements that position you on the side of families and regular people and clearly express your values and objectives It s not a speech or a backgrounder on all the issues If you can t memorize it and say it in 30 seconds it s not simple enough Our video for the Elementary Teachers of Ontario has a clear simple message smaller class sizes helps your kids learn 6 Contrast and respond It s not enough to say what you are for your message also needs to be
