  • ACCESS Alliance infographic called "Bad Jobs are making us sick" | Canadian Association of Labour Media
    the rise in insecure precarious types of jobs in Canada and the damaging health impacts that result Access Alliance has given us permission to share this infographic with you According to World Health Organization insecure jobs harm health even more than unemployment Research shows that insecure types of jobs are on the rise not just in the private sector but also within broader public sector healthcare education childcare settlement community and social service agencies etc A survey conducted by Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration of 3500 non profit organizations in Ontario found that less than half of people working in the sector had full time jobs ACCESS Alliance is calling on public sector leaders and decision makers to champion an internally driven change movement reverse this unhealthy trend starting from our own workplaces The Alliance believes that a public sector led movement can help us identify and mobilize the right combination of actionable policy solutions to this complex problem During this past year there has been increased support for building pathways to good jobs The Law Commission of Ontario United Way Toronto in partnership with McMaster University and Metcalf Foundation have commissioned major reports on precarious employment and identified concrete policy and practice solutions Atkinson Foundation has recently put resources to champion decent jobs These are the five recommendations ACCESS Alliance has for agencies to champion good jobs 1 STOP THE RISE OF INSECURE JOBS by limiting temporary part time positions to less than 5 of your workforce as recommended by International Labour Organization 2 PROMOTE WELL BEING of temporary part time employees by offering them fair wages and health extended benefits 3 PROTECT temporary part time employees by adopting higher than minimum compliance of employment standards and occupational health regulations 4 PROMOTE PATHWAYS TO STABLE EMPLOYMENT for temporary

    duty police and firefighters entered the building and demanded an audience with mayor Denis Coderre who locked himself in his city hall office during the disruption The union representing 10 000 white collar municipal workers mostly clerks and office staff has also threatened a general strike in the fall if the pension reform plan Bill 3 is not withdrawn and other unions affected by the bill have issued similar statements Quebec Detroit maneuver will reverberate across Canada Quebec s attempt to renege on their pension plan obligations to municipal workers could set a precedent that will be followed by other provinces across the country Quebec is pulling a Detroit writes the CBC s Don Pittis arguing that Quebec is trying to snatch back promised pension money by fiat avoiding the legal process of bankruptcy by using legislation Quebec and municipalities mismanaged the funds in the 1990s and now they are expecting workers to pay for it It is terrible because it is stealing money that has already been accrued says Bernard Dussault the architect of the Canada Pension Plan and former Chief Actuary for the Government of Canada The only other place in Canada where pensions have been reneged on is New Brunswick where the government s decision to legislate reform is being fought in court by the New Brunswick Pension Coalition Pension battles across the country are heating up including for Regina civic workers and Bombardier workers in Thunder Bay Labour for Palestine Unions across Canada have issued statements in solidarity with the people of Gaza as the siege and bombing of the Gaza strip by the state of Israel continued through the summer Both large affiliate unions and small locals have taken a stance not just on the violence but also the silence of the major political parties in Canada The indiscriminate and disproportionate bombing of Gaza has shown a blatant disregard for civilian lives and must be halted immediately Unifor stated La Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec FTQ called for its members to join a national protest in Montreal demanding an end to Israeli aggression an end to the blockade of Gaza and an end to the occupation and colonisation of Palestinian land As the siege wears on even supporters of the NDP are speaking out against the party s silence with a handful of occupations and protests occurring at the offices of NDP politicians after which NDP leader Thomas Mulcair came out with a statement supporting the Palestinians right to self determination Cisco hires here fires there Eight months after announcing a job creation partnership between the Ontario government and international technology company Cisco Liberals have come under fire for not releasing the details of the contract following a recent announcement that Cisco actually plans to lay off 6 000 workers worldwide The deal announced in December would have sent 220 million in taxpayer dollars to Cisco for the creation of 1 700 jobs in Ontario The provincial NDP critic Wayne Gates wants to
