  • Labour News Round-up – October in review, 2014 | Canadian Association of Labour Media
the differently abled launched a charter challenge to save home mail delivery The case argues that the elimination of mail delivery violates rights that guarantee equality to groups like disabled citizens and violated the Human Rights Act because its effects on employees without prior consultation As Canada Post starts to phase out its home mail delivery senior and differently abled people are starting to experience difficulties getting their mail from so called community mail boxes Just outside Montreal more than 50 protesters from the Industrial Workers of the World briefly occupied a mail sorting centre in a solidarity action Tories pillaging EI just as Liberals did before them The Conservative government has been padding their books with five billion from a surplus in the EI account continuing a practice the Liberal government started The employment insurance program is intended to support the unemployed but instead consecutive Liberal and Tory governments have dipped into it to pay for tax cuts for corporations and the richest and for other spending priorities When Paul Martin was finance minister and prime minister he grabbed 55 billion in employment insurance funds a move that Unifor s Atlantic director Lana Payne calls a Robin Hood in reverse scheme which the Tories criticized in opposition but are now continuing The latest report from the Parliamentary Budget Office suggested that the surplus funds be used to reduce premiums or to enhance benefits to the unemployed which is what many labour leaders have been calling for The policy will also cost the economy 9 000 jobs he reported NDP launches national child care plan The NDP has put forward a national 15 a day childcare plan as part of their election platform to be phased in gradually if they win power The plan would involve NDP boosting federal investment over eight years spending 290 million for 60 000 spaces in the first year then 1 86 billion by 2018 creating 370 000 new child care spots The plan will be broadly based on the 7 30 a day Quebec daycare model which economist Pierre Fortin has concluded led to large increases in children in childcare alongside increases in the number of Quebec women who entered the work force Because the program had a direct impact on gross domestic product the cost of the program is offset by that comes to the government through increased taxes Food insecurity growing because of low income unjust agricultural system Four million people in Canada are experiencing some kind of food insecurity A big factor is low income and unemployment but insecurity is being experienced increasingly by students and people with jobs Canada s food and agricultural system is also a huge factor Farm are become larger and fewer with big agribusiness being supported with massive subsidies by the federal government to push out small farmers and orient monocrop production for export rather than biodiversity and better food distribution throughout Canada Corporations are also monopolizing seed supply with 75 percent of seeds being controlled
