  • Tapping Into Our Talent: Union Members As Spokespeople | Canadian Association of Labour Media
the same issues helps to show we really are the diverse and representative movement we say we are which in turn helps the labour movement to engage communities it may not currently be reaching Add New Angles One good way to keep a campaign or issue at the forefront of consciousness is to uncover new angles from which to present it How many times do we want to hear from the same spokesperson saying the same thing before our eyes glaze over and we lose interest However if we are shown how different members might be affected in different ways or that the issue has consequences that haven t yet been discussed that makes it a lot more interesting adding fresh perspectives to the story which makes the campaign or issue harder to dismiss Keep It Real In the age of PR we are justifiably wary of the glib talking head spokesperson spouting a spin doctored line Overly orchestrated media events and releases complete with carefully crafted quotes from leaders are often greeted with apathy from journalists members and the public alike Additionally employers often devote a lot of resources to this type of corporate communications spiel and it s tough to compete However a heartfelt story from a member who is living the issues they are talking about will hands down beat a slickster in a suit anytime Here s two videos by OPSEU showcasing its members Issues for Members as Spokespeople There are of course many times when it just makes more sense for official union representatives to be spokespeople For example employers can and will use disciplinary tactics on rank and file members citing corporate policies on speaking to the media or using social media In such cases a regular union member might have to tread carefully whereas a steward or local president is afforded a great deal more legal protection by virtue of their role as a union representative to openly tackle the boss If it s a sensitive issue or if strong criticism is called for ensure union protection is there for the spokesperson allies who can t be disciplined or fired by the boss can and should speak out as well It s always a good idea to ensure all your members are aware of dos and don t s in speaking to the media however as they could be interviewed at pickets rallies and demos by journalists seeking the average union member s perspective When what s at stake is a national policy issue or campaign or an official statement or action from the union as a whole obviously the elected leaders of the union are going to speak However it helps to have members and allies available as well If member spokespeople are unaware of how to avoid being slapped with a defamation lawsuit they could also end up in trouble that could easily have been avoided with a little training In fact training is the key to avoiding all these issues
