  • Work environment may put women at risk of diabetes | Canadian Association of Labour Media
    work stress to diabetes risk are 1 disruptions to neuroendocrine and immune system functioning and increased or prolonged cortisol and sympathetic hormone release in reaction to stress and 2 changes in health behaviour patterns particularly those related to diet and energy expenditure possibly as coping mechanisms While research has examined the relationship between the psychosocial work environment and hypertension and heart disease relatively few studies to date have examined the relationship between psychosocial work conditions and diabetes Diabetes is a growing public health concern In Ontario the prevalence of diabetes in 2005 had already surpassed the predicted global rate for the year 2030 almost doubling between 1995 and 2005 Given the increasing prevalence of diabetes in Canada it is important to identify modifiable factors that might increase or decrease the risk of this disease in women says Dr Richard Glazier one of the study s co authors and a senior scientist at ICES While our study shows that high body mass index is probably the most important risk factor low job control among women also plays an important role in diabetes risk The study which was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research followed 7 443 actively employed but not self employed 35 to 60 year olds in Ontario who had no previous diagnosis of diabetes The study group was followed for nine years The researchers used data from the 2000 2001 Canadian Community Health Survey linked to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan OHIP database for physician services and the Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database CIHI DAD for hospital admissions The researchers found that low levels of job control were associated with an increased risk of diabetes among women but not among men The proportion of cases of diabetes among women that could be attributed to

    and five per cent increased risk of stroke Shift work is defined in this study as regular evening or night schedules rotating shifts split shifts on call or casual shifts 24 hour shifts irregular schedules and other non day schedules Given the commonness of shift work in modern industrialized nations and industrializing nations many heart attacks and strokes are likely directly attributable to the effects of shift work said lead researcher Dr Daniel Hackam a clinical pharmacologist at the Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre in London Ontario Canada Employers and employees must be aware of this problem as should doctors and others who care for shift worker health says Dr Hackam The Workers Health Safety Centre has recently updated the Shift Work fact sheet exploring the risks to health faced by shift workers including major vascular events cancer excess workplace injuries along with mental health and work life balance issues Also highlighted are examples of strategies workplaces can implement to limit the risk to health posed by shift work Also discussed are individual strategies for limiting health impacts The limited protection afforded workers by Ontario and federal law is also outlined Shift work and vascular events systematic review and
