  • "Everyone has an eating disorder": Lionel Shriver on food, fat and fiction | CBC Books | CBC Radio
the lack of enjoyment that results in eating so much Some of them throw all kinds of food that doesn t go together in a bowl and stir it up and binge on that It s not fun It s a compulsion It s not about taste It s actually about failure to be able to enjoy your food she said That the last bite didn t satisfy you and you need another one Clearly the next one will do the trick Shriver believes that the obesity epidemic a term she despises is directly related to the collective lack of satisfaction and overall unhappiness in North America If you re American you are told from a very early age that you live in the greatest country in the world it s drummed into you Shriver said But America has a lot of problems right now high levels of unemployment high levels of personal debt the country is politically divided for example so it can be tough for those struggling to see why America is supposedly so great If this is as good as it gets well that s a depressing prospect for a lot of people To fill that void people turn to other things including food It s a reaction to an unfocused dissatisfaction in American culture However Shriver is equally troubled by people who veer towards the opposite extreme those who don t eat and or exercise compulsively She sees our cultural obsession with beauty and thinness and our tendency to reduce our self worth to be just about what we look like as a major problem A person is not a body and a self is not a body and my experience of my own self is not as purely a body she said Yourself is larger

  • Canada Writes - Be clever and make an insightful joke: An interview with Kate Beaton
for drawing the comics themselves is pretty loose and simple Do you think of yourself as an artist As a writer Haha oh no this again I guess if I didn t think of myself as either of those things I probably wouldn t be making comics What are your literary and artistic influences Where do you find inspiration I remember reading about Pearson that his opinion was about as good as that of the last person that he talked to and whether that s true or not I believe that s true enough for me with influences there are not many great looming figures in my mind but there are dozens of things I have read and seen and taken note of today yesterday a year ago I suppose because of the way we see information these days on the internet we are constantly going through it absorbing words and pictures at a rapid fire rate that it s hard to pin things down There s a lot of talented people out there creating content and we re all feeding off each other in a way But I do like old fashioned humorists like Leacock or Dickens or Dorothy Parker and masters of cartooning and illustration like Ronald Searle or contemporaries like Jillian Tamaki or Sam Bosma who will just blow you away with skills you wished you had What would you tell an aspiring comics artist who is starting out today The comics world is changing so fast that the grounds are shifting under our feet it s not even the same world I came into in 2007 which wasn t that long ago It s never been an easy place to make a living doing comics And it s hard to give advice The best you can

  • Fan fiction on Amazon: exploited or exploitative? | CBC Books | CBC Radio
other fans of that particular work These communities tend to be very large as fan fiction has a massive following of writers and readers Although Novik is a very successful author of her own original science fiction series the Temeraire series but she continues to write fan fiction as well Why For me fan fiction is very much a place of creativity of play I would never have written my own original novels if I hadn t been writing fan fiction for years beforehand she said She considers fan fiction a safe space to experiment and explains that many inexperienced writers find their way into storytelling through writing fan fiction So why is she so concerned about Amazon s move to publish virtual fan fiction As a writer I would love the idea myself of being able to license the Temeraire series and be able to invite fans to come and write their own stories within the Temeraire universe and share profits with them she said So the core concept of it I find quite appealing Unfortunately she thinks that Amazon s terms are unfair The terms to me are quite exploitative and problematic she said They require you to publish with them exclusively which means that you can t publish them anywhere else you can t share it online with other fans And that s really part of the fan fic writing community Under Amazon s rules the only way to share your story would be for someone to purchase it And obviously that diminishes access to it said Novik The other part of it is if you create an original character or plot or scenes Amazon is saying that they get an exclusive license to those scenes and they re going to give them back to the original
