  • CBC Parents - Daily Life - Sharon, Lois and Bram ... and Me
The Elephant Show was based in nostalgia rather than taste Nope Clearly seven year old Erik knew his stuff It was fantastic More importantly L loved it Her favourites were Caballito Blanco which allowed her to speak Spanish like her Argentine abuelitos and Skinnamarink which she adopted as a personal anthem The song was such an obsession I became an expert on its many YouTube incarnations There s something about Sharon Lois and Bram s singing style not only the harmonies but also the way they tended to rely on their natural voices rather than cartoonish caricatures that appeals to kids Yes most of the songs are standards but the backing instrumentation feels organic and the vocal arrangements fresh L began carting around their greatest hits CD like it was a teddy she d get super excited whenever she d hear one of their songs pop up on the Kids CBC online radio music stream And then only a few months ago I stumbled upon Smorgasbord on vinyl L has CDs and an mp3 player but I liked the idea of her having a record I wanted her to see how it s placed on the turntable with the needle lowered Besides I thought it s Sharon Lois and Bram It s probably good The record is more than good it s bonafide great Produced by a guy named Bill Usher it s unlike any children s album I ve ever heard thanks to its sheer range of styles and genres With its quick sonic shifts and weird cameos it feels like a hip hop mixtape at times Opening with the disco rock one two punch of Peanut Butter and Head n Shoulders Baby Smorgasbord must have been a shift from the traditional folk stylings of a lot of the children s music of that time There s the calypso of the Hold em Joe Belafonte cover the call and response funk of Did You Feed My Cow and the glorious kitchen party anarchy of Newfoundland Jig Medley The record is also littered with bizarrely wonderful digressions schoolyard songs sung by kids and what sounds like a pair of old English drinking ditties belted out by the producer s father and grandfather Even without my hard sell L instantly loved these songs from the Tin Pan Alley of A You re Adorable to the title track s paean to culinary multiculturalism Hearing your three year old belt out a Ghanaian echo song like Che Che Koolay or watching her burst into punkish dancing during Sur le Pont d Avignon is pretty much the best thing ever I love this album unironically and unapologetically and I m absolutely thrilled L loves it too The best part is Sharon Lois and Bram are still around They even have an iPhone iPad app and did a guest post on CBC Parents which means I m technically their co worker My inner child s mind is blown Also a quick Wikipedia search suggests that

  • CBC Parents - Family Life - 10 great books for girls and boys
love affair with picture books began In this spunky take on your classic princess tale a dragon destroys Princess Elizabeth s castle burns all her clothes and carries off her handsome prince She s left with only a paper bag to wear Rather than sit around moping Elizabeth decides to track down the dragon and get back her prince After finally outsmarting the dragon and rescuing Prince Ronald she discovers that her prince might not actually be the one for her BOOKS FOR THE SCHOOL AGED AGES 6 TO 9 Marja s Skis by Jean E Pendziwol illustrated by Jirina Marton Marja lives in a logging village in the early 1800s She looks up to her older sister Eeva and longs for the day when she too will have her own skis and be able to go to school Marja s always been told she is too young or not strong enough to do the things she wants to do but one evening her father says to her When you are strong inside you can do anything sniff On her seventh birthday Marja receives her own set of skis and is able to attend school After her father dies in a logging accident Marja finds it hard to be strong But when faced with an emergency she s able to remember her father s words This is a beautiful story of inner strength and believing in yourself Viola Desmond Won t Be Budged by Jody Nyasha Warner illustrated by Richard Rudnicki In 1946 Viola Desmond sat down for her rights in a movie theatre in New Glasgow Nova Scotia she had taken her seat in the lower level of the movie theatre which as it turned out was not accessible to black patrons She would become an inspiration to the anti segregation movement in Canada The text is extremely approachable written in a relaxed conversational style and is accompanied by Richard Rudnicki s beautiful acrylic paintings The book is a wonderfully written and illustrated portrait of a brave Canadian woman and will inspire discussions about courage injustice and segregation in Canada among other topics Rachel Captures the Moon by Richard Ungar The people of the village of Chelm are in love with the moon So much so they go to great measures to capture it so they can enjoy it whenever they want They try all sorts of ridiculous schemes but only young Rachel has the common sense to succeed Richard Ungar retells this Jewish folktale in joyful words and with his beautifully vibrant Chagalesque paintings No Girls Allowed Tales of Daring Women Dressed as Men for Love Freedom and Adventure by Susan Hughes illustrated by Willow Dawson No Girls Allowed includes the stories of seven women who would not be kept from achieving their goals by the phrase No girls allowed Told in graphic novel format it takes us from Ancient Egypt in 1470 BCE to the American Civil War in the mid 1800s The book is labelled as

a penguin to perch atop the giant Duplo towers built in our living room For the most part normal Lego is marketed toward boys I m guessing the rationale is construction is traditionally a male dominated field but Lego is also architecture interior design and sculpture there s no reason one gender should be more into it than the other Still when you re in a Lego store it s easy to spot the girl sets they re ghettoized in a small section with blocks in various shade of purple pink and pastels along with princesses and more svelte figurines For now L bypasses them and heads straight for the zoo collection but if she wants to build fuchsia pet salons one day we won t stand in her way Encouraging L to look beyond traditional girl toys is about opening new doors not closing old ones She still wears pink flowery hats and she carries around an assortment of infant dolls I also spent last weekend painstakingly assembling a kitchen for her birthday My wife and I just want L to know it s okay that she also likes to pet spiders proudly show off bruises get muddy and pretend she s a big scary crocodile We want L to make her own fun time choices before TV commercials and classmates start dictating what she can and can t do Like the other night I was drinking a cane sugar cola L asked for a try but we told her pop wasn t for little ones I don t like that drink either my wife reassured her L misunderstood Oh that drink is not for girls said my daughter nodding her head while processing No that s not it my wife quickly said It s just not for me
