  • Curler Dave Nedohin joins Kevin Martin's rink
joining B C skip Jim Cotter s team Obviously in this situation once the change in our team was inevitable Dave was obviously our first choice for so many reasons said Martin His shot making ability was at the top of the list Nedohin joined Ferbey in 1997 and throwing final rocks helped win four Briers and three world championships But he wasn t an easy catch After a year skipping his own rink following Ferbey s retirement Nedohin suggested last month he was going to step back while wife Heather focused on her own Olympic trials bid Then came Morris s announcement but initially Nedohin said he declined Martin s offer to return to the game Then his parents offered to help out with the child care while both he and Heather try to qualify for the Olympics The Roar of the Rings where the berth will be decided will be held in Winnipeg Nedohin s home town and Morris s coincidentally in December The location was another bonus for Nedohin There is always a period of acclimatization when curlers join new rinks but Martin says after so many years watching each other even curling together in the odd celebrity event Martin sees it being relatively short with Nedohin I bet we ve played 100 times if not more than 100 times he said There s not going to be too much of a learning curve that s for sure Martin also downplayed the changes which have raised some eyebrows in the curling world if only for their timing with the trials ahead Teams just can t stay the same forever sports just don t work that way Martin laughed when asked if he would surrender skip rocks Nedohin will be throwing third stones something he hasn t done a lot of in competitive curling since 1997 But he says he s looking forward to it plus the chance to sweep more and Martin says Nedohin s sweeping ability is just one more reason why he s such a good fit The Canadian Press 2013 Share Tools Report Typo Send Feedback Latest curling Stories Curler Dave Nedohin joins Kevin Martin s rink Former Randy Ferbey team member Dave Nedohin has joined Edmonton skip Kevin Martin and given his bid at winning the Olympic curling trials new life more Curler John Morris joining Jim Cotter s rink John Morris has joined Jim Cotter s rink from Kelowna B C as the team prepares for the Canadian Olympic pre trial competition in November more John Morris quits Kevin Martin s rink Kevin Martin is looking for a new vice after he and John Morris announced Wednesday that Morris is quitting the team more Russell Skip Eve Muirhead Scotland s next Queen Already a world champion Scotland skip Eve Muirhead will be a gold medal threat at the 2014 Sochi Olympics writes Sports Weekend host Scott Russell more Glenn Howard captures Players Championship Glenn Howard won the Players Championship with a 4

  • Curler John Morris a coveted free agent
one more year left in them and they d make a run at the Olympic trials and see what would happen said Brent Laing who plays second on Glenn Howard s rink I was pretty surprised yesterday to hear that it happened now and that it was John that decided to leave the team Laing who teamed with Morris to win world junior titles in 1998 and 1999 doesn t think his former teammate will be off the ice for long I would almost guarantee that John got calls last night from people Laing said Six of the eight berths for the Dec 1 8 trials have been set with the two remaining spots to be finalized at a pre trials competition in Kitchener Ont this November The winner of the trials will represent Canada at the 2014 Games in Sochi I m sure he had some teams from the pre trials calling Laing said I m sure there s at least one or maybe two feeler calls from teams that are already in the trials that would make room for John So he ll be out of a team as long as he wants to be out of a team and he ll be on another team as soon as he wants to be Martin from Edmonton earned a spot at the trials by winning the 2011 Canada Cup Howard from Coldwater Ont Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg Calgary s Kevin Koe Winnipeg s Mike McEwen and Toronto s John Epping have also qualified Morris was not available for comment Thursday and Martin and his teammates also could not be reached Morris will hold a media availability Friday morning in Calgary while Martin was scheduled to speak to reporters later in the day in Edmonton Hebert weighed in on Twitter shortly after the news broke Super Tough Day Thx for best 7 years of my life at johnnymocurler Good luck down the road pal Hebert said in a tweet Craig Savill who plays lead for Howard and won two world junior titles with Morris and Laing was also surprised at the timing It s shocking that it happened now Savill said I thought it would happen after next year It s just strange timing with pretty much all the teams set for next season playing in the pre trials and the trials Savill added it will be challenging for both Morris and Martin next season since it can often take several months for teams to find a rhythm when a new player comes on board It s huge shoes to fill though with Morris leaving Savill said There s not very many people that can play at his level so it s pretty tough to find a replacement for him The Canadian Press 2013 Share Tools Report Typo Send Feedback Latest curling Stories Curler Dave Nedohin joins Kevin Martin s rink Former Randy Ferbey team member Dave Nedohin has joined Edmonton skip Kevin Martin and given his bid at winning

  • John Morris quits Kevin Martin's rink
challenging past few seasons and have not lived up to our expectations of being the best curling team in the world said Morris After forming prior to the 2006 07 season the foursome was one of the most dominant in the curling s history capturing the Tim Hortons Brier in 2008 at Winnipeg and 2009 at Calgary both with undefeated records The Martin rink also won the world men s championship in 2008 at Grand Forks N D and finished second a year later at the World Men s Championship in Moncton N B The team also won a gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver As much as we ve all tried very hard to find a way to fight back and get better in the end it was obvious that we needed a change said Morris Myself and Kevin were no longer thriving in our back end role like we did in our 2010 Olympic gold medal run I have always been a very driven and intense athlete and right now in this situation I feel my passion and love for the game of curling is not where it needs to be As a result it is with a very heavy heart that I will be stepping down as my role of third on Team Martin It is never an easy thing to have a team member decide to leave your team said Martin John Morris was an integral part of what made Team Martin the best team in curling for many years and Olympic gold medallists in 2010 But change is unfortunately inevitable Morris s departure does not affect Martin s direct entry berth for the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials Dec 1 8 in Winnipeg A replacement player for Morris will be announced at a later date The Canadian Press 2013 Share Tools Report Typo Send Feedback Latest curling Stories Curler Dave Nedohin joins Kevin Martin s rink Former Randy Ferbey team member Dave Nedohin has joined Edmonton skip Kevin Martin and given his bid at winning the Olympic curling trials new life more Curler John Morris joining Jim Cotter s rink John Morris has joined Jim Cotter s rink from Kelowna B C as the team prepares for the Canadian Olympic pre trial competition in November more John Morris quits Kevin Martin s rink Kevin Martin is looking for a new vice after he and John Morris announced Wednesday that Morris is quitting the team more Russell Skip Eve Muirhead Scotland s next Queen Already a world champion Scotland skip Eve Muirhead will be a gold medal threat at the 2014 Sochi Olympics writes Sports Weekend host Scott Russell more Glenn Howard captures Players Championship Glenn Howard won the Players Championship with a 4 3 victory over Mike McEwen in the men s final Sunday afternoon in Toronto more More Headlines more curling stories video audio OPINION All Contributors Mike Harris Glenn Howard is clear world title

advantage We could conceivably go 11 0 and someone could come in at 8 3 I always thought the winner of the round robin should get the bye to the final We could conceivably end up fourth which doesn t make sense to me We ve played everybody once To me the winner of the round robin should go to the final That was the scenario for 15 years after a playoff format was introduced to the Brier in 1980 In 1995 the Page playoff was instituted to give both the Brier host committee and the host broadcaster another game on the final weekend to draw spectators to the building and viewers to their televisions The team finishing first in the round robin has won the Canadian title 13 of 18 years since then Glenn Howard 2007 2012 is part of that group but he s also twice topped the round robin standings and didn t win 2006 2010 Martin denied of record Ontario Manitoba and Alberta were considered the pre tournament favourites Four time Canadian champion Kevin Martin won six in a row but a 1 4 start to the tournament was the hometown team s undoing With the win over Howard Martin needed a Manitoba loss to B C s Andrew Bilesky on the next sheet next to get a tiebreaker game Rexall Place turned raucous late in the draw cheering against Howard and Stoughton and chanting their names like they were the goaltenders on an opposing NHL team But Stoughton s draw for a 6 5 win in an extra end meant Martin will not set a record this year for the most Briers won by a skip It was hard just because there was lots of yelling and people wanting you to miss which is a little unusual in the game Stoughton said It took a lot to calm down and relax and know you had to throw it pretty light just to make up for a little excitement Martin s elimination wasn t good for the host committee It was going to be a stretch for the 2013 Brier to come close to the attendance record of 281 985 set by Edmonton in 2005 but the host team s absence on the final weekend be a drag on ticket sales Jacobs whose finished third at the 2010 Brier scored three in the 10th end against Nova Scotia for a 5 2 win and a playoff berth I m elated by this the 27 year old skip said We ve made the playoff and we have a shot to win the Brier so we re real happy Gushue the 2006 Olympic champion has reached the Brier playoff seven times in 10 appearances but he has yet to win it and his team this year is low on Brier experience Third Brett Gallant is playing his first Canadian men s championship and front end Adam Casey and Geoff Walker their second in as many years After a

play Norway Thomas Ulsrud and his team are no strangers to the podium World runners up in 2010 and Olympic silver medalists their numerous playoff appearances over the years make this team one of the favourites to advance past the round robin in Basel Expect them to be near the top of the standings Scotland Tom Brewster and his team were the runners up to Stoughton and Team Canada last year in Regina This young team is a little inconsistent but they impressed many last year and will have high expectations this year If they get off to a good start they will be tough to beat as the week progresses Dark Horses China Rui Liu and his team are a little streaky They have moments of being be very good and also moments of being very bad They will need to find a consistent high level to do well in this field Denmark Rasmus Stjerne and his team have made some excellent progress over the past couple of seasons They made the semifinals of the bonspiel in Brantford in November and have been improving every time they step on the ice They have also had some success in big events making the final of the 2010 European Championships before falling to Norway United States Heath McCormick is a relative unknown playing in his first world championship but he s very well known in southern Ontario McCormick was an Ontario Mixed champion in 2004 and he made it to the final of the Ontario men s championship in 2003 narrowly missing out on a trip to the Brier He is a U S citizen and made the decision to play out of the States a few years ago with the goal of making the Olympics and world championships He knows how to curl at the highest level His biggest challenge will be his inexperience at this type of event If he starts strong he could contend for a playoff position The Rest Switzerland Home ice advantage for Jan Hauser and his team will help them win a few games but this is a strong field If they get rolling early they may sneak into a battle for a playoff spot but I expect them to finish in the middle of the pack Czech Republic Jiri Snitil and his team are returning to the worlds with more experience and hope to move up the world rankings with some victories here They ll win a few games but they re in tough France Thomas Dufour had a great run last year going 7 4 but this field is much stronger than last year s His team is also trying to gain valuable ranking points to qualify for the Sochi Olympics They work hard at their game but will need to be at their best to win games here Germany John Jahr and his team have little experience at this level as we usually see Andy Kapp representing Germany at the worlds This
