  • Canadians Duhamel, Radford win bronze at figure skating worlds
claiming a medal finishing fourth 199 50 marking the first time Canada has had two pairs teams in the top four since 1962 I think Canada is becoming well rounded in all disciplines and that s not something I ve seen since I ve been skating for 18 years said Moore Towers who with Moscovitch sparked the Canadian team s momentum here as the first skaters to compete It was awesome Moscovitch said We got to skate first for Canada from any discipline we had a really exciting short program we just got the ball rolling Duhamel and Radford looked for awhile like their bronze would be silver They were second after the short program and their only noticeable error in their free skate to the soundtrack from the British movie Angel was a botched three jump combination that simply looked like they ran out of steam midway Their triple twist lift was so big Radford had time to put his hands behind his back as the five foot Duhamel was spinning skyward Their skate was considerably cleaner than that of Savchenko and Szolkowy whose error filled program to a flamenco version of Bolero had Twitter abuzz with references to trainwreck and had fans at Budweiser Gardens booing when their scores were announced Savchenko doubled a couple of planned triple jumps while Szolkowy fell on a triple Salchow Volosozhar and Trankov also weren t perfect with Trankov falling on a throw This bronze medal is golden to us But the Canadian medal winners were quick to shrug off any suggestions of disappointment in the marks This bronze medal is golden to us I don t think we feel anything but joy about it Duhamel said The two said their hearts were in their throats watching Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov skate after them The Russians had the potential to knock the Canadians off the podium but that ended when Kavaguti fell out of a lift and was left clutching onto Smirnov s shoulders like she was riding piggy back It s always harder to watch somebody because we re not in control of what they re doing Duhamel said I was watching Eric went and sat in the bathroom and tried to forget about it The Canadians combined results means that Canada will have three pairs entries in next year s Sochi Olympics The podium performance is just one highlight of what s been a strong world championships for the Canadian team thus far Patrick Chan took a huge lead into Friday night s men s free program in his quest for a third consecutive world title Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are in second place heading into Saturday s free dance while 17 year old Kaetlyn Osmond is fourth heading into the women s free program Canada has never had a medal in all four disciplines at a world championships For Moore Towers and Moscovitch the near medal was a huge success after they failed to make last year

  • Brazilian stadium has roof collapse just weeks ahead of Confed Cup
Fonte Nova Participacoes said in a statement It s an isolated incident This situation would have never happened during an event because the arena is thoroughly inspected ahead of time Local organizers said engineers were sent to the venue to find out what happened FIFA and LOC have been informed that repair work is already underway the local World Cup organizing committee said in a statement The collapse happened the same day Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff praised the country s preparations for the Confederations Cup the World Cup warm up tournament I m certain that Brazil will shine on and off the field Rousseff said on Monday in her weekly radio program I travelled across the country to inaugurate the six Confederations Cup stadiums and was impressed with the beauty and the modernity of these new football stages The Fonte Nova was inaugurated in April and will host three Confederations Cup matches including the high profile matchup between Brazil and Italy on June 22 The first match at the venue will be on June 20 when Nigeria faces Uruguay The 56 000 capacity stadium which will also host the third place match on June 30 will also be used in the 2014 World Cup when it will host six matches including one of the quarterfinals In March heavy rains forced the cancellation of a FIFA inspection visit to the Maracana stadium which was under renovation for the Confederations Cup Workers there also used buckets to remove water which accumulated in parts of the stadium s recently installed roof Local organizers recently blamed heavy rains for the delay in delivering the stadium in Brasilia which will host the opener of the warm up tournament on June 15 They said the pitch installation schedule had to be altered because of the rains Earlier this year FIFA stressed that it would not accept such excuses for stadium delays ahead of the World Cup It is exactly because of natural challenges faced in big construction works like the heavy rains observed in BrasDilia that the stadiums must be ready enough time before the tournaments FIFA and the local organizing committee said Delays like the ones observed will not be tolerated for the stadiums that will host only FIFA World Cup matches which involves a significantly higher number of host cities teams fans matches journalists and TV audience Only two of the six Confederations Cup venues were ready by the December deadline originally established by FIFA The Estadio Nacional in Brasilia hosted only one test event fully open to the public and that will also be the case at the Maracana FIFA usually wants three test events in each venue but had to make exceptions in Brazil because of the series of delays The Associated Press 2013 Share Tools Report Typo Send Feedback Latest soccer Stories Canadian born soccer player Sydney Leroux alleges racial taunts in Toronto Sydney Leroux a Canadian born U S international has accused fans in Toronto of racially taunting her at
