since September 1 2 9 TAMPA BAY RAYS up from 11 Record 83 66 Last 10 7 3 Rays manager Joe Maddon has certainly earned his Letter Sweater the outfit worn by his team during a recent road trip That games 10 LOS ANGELES ANGELS no change Record 82 67 Last 10 7 3 The Angels are only 26 25 in their AL West division which explains why they can t quite close the gap on the Texas Rangers Los Angeles is 56 37 in games started by the Big Three Jered Weaver Dan Haren and Ervin Santana 11 ST LOUIS CARDINALS up from 14 Record 81 68 Last 10 7 3 The Cards are putting Chris Carpenter to work since he signed that two year 21 million US extension They ve rearranged their rotation so the big right hander gets one extra start in the final two weeks of the season A hand injury to Matt Holliday isn t helping their slim hopes of reaching the playoffs 12 SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS down from 8 Record 80 70 Last 10 7 3 Too little too late as two home runs by Carlos Beltran led the Giants to a win The outfielder acquired from the Mets missed 13 games after joining the Giants who put together their first four game win streak since the all star break in September as the Diamondbacks slithered out of sight 13 TORONTO BLUE JAYS up from 15 Record 75 74 Last 10 6 4 The Blue Jays are sticking close to 500 as they close the season with games against the Yankees and Rays that carry playoff implications A couple of good signs Ricky Romero 15 10 has nearly identical stats as Boston s Jon Lester who s had four 15 plus win seasons in a row And J P Arencibia not only has the team record for homers by a catcher 23 but he s only one away from Eric Hinske s rookie record by any position player 14 CHICAGO WHITE SOX down from 13 Record 73 76 Last 10 3 7 The White Sox had a 6 14 ERA against division rival Detroit before allowing three runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings where they lost again to the Tigers 6 5 Ozzie Guillen has been tweeting quite a lot in Spanish no doubt warming up for a job interview with the soon to be Miami Marlins 15 CLEVELAND INDIANS down from 12 Record 72 75 Last 10 2 8 The Indians were rewarded for their strong first half of the season with a schedule that has them playing 18 games in the final 16 days They ran out of steam just after the all star break as injuries and pitching woes scuttled their recovery hopes 16 LOS ANGELES DODGERS up from 21 Record 73 76 Last 10 5 5 Clayton Kershaw got some revenge and his 19th win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday Kershaw hit the D backs Gerardo Parra who lingered at the plate after homering the night before Though Kershaw was tossed from the game the bullpen preserved the win The last 20 game winner for the Dodgers was Ramon Martinez in 1990 17 CINCINNATI REDS down from 16 Record 74 76 Last 10 5 5 Juan Last 10 4 6 You could say 119 errors second only to the Chicago Cubs is one of the reasons why the Moneyball A s aren t a box office hit this season Oakland gets to finish out its schedule with 10 of • Memo to Jays: Don't coddle Lawrie | CBC Sports
old that after the Jays acquired him in December for starting pitcher Shaun Marcum boldly proclaimed himself fit for the major leagues Lawrie is a confident kid who wants to be tested and hitting second in the lineup where he batted for much of this season at AAA Las Vegas would be a welcome challenge It s also interesting to note that while the Jays unveiled Lawrie on the road to avoid a media frenzy in Toronto they were simultaneously running TV ads trumpeting his debut And cameras have been following Lawrie to everywhere but the washroom since he joined the club So if the directive to the coaching staff is to alleviate the pressure on Lawrie the marketing department didn t get the memo Unfazed by hype Fortunately Lawrie s performance even after going hitless with two strikeouts in Tuesday s 4 1 defeat has shown he s not fazed by the hype and his promotion has had the additional benefit of taking the spotlight off recently acquired centre fielder Colby Rasmus 24 who seems less comfortable in front of the camera It isn t a coincidence Rasmus has hit 400 since Lawrie s debut At the plate Lawrie employs an open stance with his bat in constant motion The hitch in the load of his swing is not ideal but his swing is compact and powerful and his bat speed is outstanding The stocky infielder has hit the ball hard to all fields and has worked the count effectively providing evidence that his plate discipline considered one of his weaknesses at the start of the season is improving Big league pitchers have been trying to get him out with a steady diet of outside breaking pitches that he has for the most part refused to chase The young third baseman has also exhibited explosive speed out of the batter s box that s complemented by his all out hustle In his Blue Jays debut Aug 5 at Baltimore Lawrie botched a routine ground ball had a hard hit ball go off his glove and made a low throw to second on what should ve been a double play grounder But since that shaky first game he has been flawless in the field showcasing quick feet a strong arm and above average range Keep in mind however he did make 16 errors in 69 games at Vegas transitioning to third from second base and doesn t possess soft hands or a consistently accurate throwing arm So as outstanding as that diving play was on Jemile Weeks s grounder in the fifth inning Tuesday Lawrie is not Brooks Robinson but most scouts feel he can develop into a reliable third baseman One of the knocks against Lawrie in the past has been his attitude When he s on the field he believes he s better than any other player and he shows it His cockiness sometimes infuriates opponents and his two Rickey Henderson like snap catches on pop ups Saturday

  • Harrison: Lawrie's gain is Snider's pain
my mind Travis is going to be a great player said the GM at the time I think it s a bump in the road Bumps in the road have been more a part of Snider s game than consistent play during his short tenure with the Blue Jays Some thought he broke in with the Jays one year too early in 2008 when he yo yoed between the minor leagues and Toronto like utility player Mike McCoy this season but with much less fanfare Slow start In 2009 Snider got off to a slow start and then injured his wrist just as he was heating up spending nearly three months on the disabled list Last season Snider suffered through another injury and bruised ego when he was straight out optioned to AA New Hampshire for three weeks after receiving a clean bill of health He returned to Toronto on July 30 and was in a platoon situation with fourth outfielder Fred Lewis By September Snider s bat came alive but the hitting barrage was cut short by the end of the regular season So now it s back to AAA and working with hitting coach Chad Mottola whom Snider clicked with in his previous stay in Las Vegas rather than work with the capable Dwayne Murphy in Toronto the man who helped turn Jose Bautista into the biggest home run threat in the majors a year ago I d be lying if I said I wasn t frustrated when these things happen Snider said but again when you put it all in perspective it s not a decision that I can control It s a matter of getting back into the routine I established when I came back up on July 3 The key to staying here is to be consistent I m looking forward to seeing Chad and spending some time getting some things ironed out As with his good friend Snider getting comfortable again in the field and at the plate was the key for Lawrie who has made the transition from second base to third this season In 69 games with Vegas he made 16 errors with the bulk coming earlier in the season Anthopoulos and Farrell seem confident in the timing of Lawrie s promotion stating the 21 year old from Langley B C has done everything we have asked at triple A in terms of changing positions coming back from the broken hand in early June getting back into the flow of things The numbers a 353 batting average in 69 games with the 51s a team leading 18 home runs 61 RBIs and 415 on base percentage don t lie Acquired from Milwaukee last December for starting pitcher Shaun Marcum Lawrie appears to be something special Only time will tell if Lawrie can quickly reach his potential in the bigs or soon receive the Snider treatment We try to put these players in the best position to have success when they come up

  • Jays' farm system stockpiled with character
taking his demotion in stride trying to absorb as much as he can to help himself grow as a baseball player The one thing about Travis is if he has a question he s going to ask the question said the 51s manager There s no hidden agenda with Travis If he doesn t understand something he ll say he doesn t understand it Canadian Adam Loewen is another one of Brown s every day players exhibiting inquisitiveness and willingness to learn Drafted fourth overall by the Baltimore Orioles in 2002 as a pitcher the 27 year old Surrey B C native has made the transition to left field throughout his minor league journey and has embraced the role Open minded I admire his athleticism and the fact that Adam is like a sponge said Brown He knows he has a lot to learn he s very open minded and he really wants to give this thing his everything He wants to do everything he can do to find out if he can make this transition from pitcher to hitter so I m very pleased to have him As of Aug 12 he was hitting 317 with 42 doubles and 77 RBIs for Las Vegas He s a guy that s on the attack and he goes right after hitters Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava on Henderson Alvarez Blue Jays fans are about to become familiar with another highly touted prospect who received a major league promotion on Aug 9 Henderson Alvarez who signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2006 tore up AA hitting with a 2 86 earned run average with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Toronto s AA affiliate LaCava said Alvarez can touch the mid 90s miles per hour with his fastball but at age 21 he s getting better and better each day He s got good life to that fastball and he commands it too he said He s a guy that s on the attack and he goes right after hitters Toronto has recently made a push for pitching depth drafting a towering trio of hurlers with their first round selections in each of the last three seasons While 2011 first rounder Tyler Beede has yet to be signed the right hander has already committed to Vanderbilt University and is in negotiations with the Jays 2009 first rounder Chad Jenkins and 2010 first rounder Deck McGuire are currently pitching for the Fisher Cats Each one stands at least six foot four with McGuire listed at six foot six and LaCava believes their stature can create problems for opposing hitters It s harder to hit a ball coming at a downward angle to home plate as opposed to a smaller guy or a shorter guy whose fastball pitch is more in the plane of the bat of the swing So it s definitely an advantage for a pitcher to pitch on a downhill angle He s also excited about an

pass judgement on someone who risked everything to play in the big leagues In October 2004 a 22 year old Escobar defected from Cuba on a small fishing vessel with two dozen others Battling hunger dehydration and six foot waves Escobar reached Miami after two days at sea His courageous trek would reunite him with Brayan Pena his best friend who had fled Cuba and signed with the Braves five years earlier And based largely on the scouting report that Pena now with the Kansas City Royals provided them the Braves risked a second round pick on Escobar in 2005 When you consider Escobar s ordeal you can understand why he might need time to adjust to life in the big leagues Fortunately in Toronto he has a new lease on his career Bautista has taken him under his wing and the talented shortstop again seems destined for stardom Sure he still has the occasional brain cramp but no one has accused him of not hustling And this season when Rajai Davis faltered in the leadoff spot Escobar took over and has thrived as the club s offensive catalyst What he lacks in speed he has made up for with plate discipline On base machine Through June 14 he led all major league shortstops with 32 walks and his 366 on base percentage ranks second among American League leadoff hitters behind only Boston s Jacoby Ellsbury and first among AL shortstops who have played at least 40 games Escobar is also tied for fourth in the league with three triples and his seven home runs third among AL shortstops behind Cleveland s Asdrubal Cabrera and Detroit s Jhonny Peralta have him on pace for a career high He also ranks third among AL shortstops in offensive WAR a valuable statistic that measures how many wins a player adds above what a AAA replacement player at their position would contribute behind Cabrera and Peralta But Escobar is superior to either of them defensively Flashy but sometimes erratic the Jays shortstop boasts a strong throwing arm that he tends to fall in love with making routine plays unnecessarily close But his range is significantly better than Peralta s or that of New York Yankees standout Derek Jeter and is on par with Cabrera He also owns a better defensive WAR than either Cabrera or Peralta That said Escobar sits fourth in the all star voting behind Jeter Cabrera and Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers It s understandable that he d rank behind Cabrera who would be a worthy all star selection but the Jays infielder has performed much better than either Jeter or Andrus this season And with all due respect to Jeter who s had a magnificent career he s no longer an elite shortstop White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez will also be in the all star mix The problem with fans voting for the all star game is that it often turns into a popularity contest and if Jeter

had having pitched against them for five six seven years Crain said and I knew they were going to be a contender I wanted to play with a team that had a chance to win a championship A smart decision on Crain s part as Minnesota sat 28th among the 30 teams with a 26 39 record through June 12 while an improving Chicago outfit was 33 35 Doug Harrison CBC Sports It wasn t always this good for Crain who began to turn around his game 13 months ago Sporting a 7 31 ERA on May 18 2010 he whittled it down to 3 04 by season s end after allowing only eight earned runs over the final 45 of his 71 appearances with four of those runs coming in the regular season finale versus the Blue Jays Crain s success coincided with a changed approach on the mound and the introduction of a new pitch Staying calm Staying calm and not looking past the next pitch has done wonders for Crain whose game face is evident during his bullpen warm up I don t try to be sharp in the bullpen I throw a lot quickly to try to get my arm loose take a deep breath and just tell myself to focus on one pitch at a time Crain said If you start thinking about who s coming up next or I have to do this or I have to do that you start letting the game get away from you and make bad pitches I learned a lot last year I m able to slow the game down now not trying to overthrow when I know I can throw a certain way and be able to throw strikes in key situations The addition of a fourth pitch a split finger change up courtesy of Twins veteran pitcher Carl Pavano has helped tremendously Unlike a slider and curveball the pitch moves away from left handed hitters who have managed just three hits and a 0 86 ERA covering 11 innings against Crain Lefty killer So why is it such an effective pitch versus lefties Well the hitters probably don t realize or know that I throw it said Crain who threw the change up a little last season and more as spring training went along If you can throw a change up it s one of the best pitches in the game It just gives me an extra weapon I use it against righties too who are hitting 206 against Crain The grip is similar to a split finger fastball It s the only thing I ve ever been able to throw that slows down I haven t been able to throw a regular change up because I can t get it to slow down This one for whatever reason the way I throw it kind of flips and that s why I ve kept throwing it Crain arrived in Toronto on May 25 and hadn t
