  • Phillies' Orr faces another uphill battle
in 66 combined games in 2008 and 2009 and played his fair share at AAA It s such a humbling experience being in the minors Philadelphia Phillies utility player Pete Orr Last November the Phillies expressed interest in Orr offering a one year contract to play a utility role He signed on for 600 000 beat out Delwyn Young for the final roster spot out of spring training and shared second base with Wilson Valdez Any time I m playing it s enjoyable said the 31 year old Orr who lives in Newmarket Ont in the off season with his wife Jodi The best part of being here is the atmosphere and the potential and excitement of this team This is one of the best teams in baseball and to be a part of it is a pretty cool feeling For now Orr will wear an IronPigs uniform play in front of much smaller crowds at Coca Cola Park in Allentown Pa and try to help Lehigh Valley maintain its first place lead in the North Division of the International League It s such a humbling experience being in the minors said Orr who spent all of last season with the Nationals AAA affiliate in Syracuse N Y My first time in Atlanta in the minor leagues I learned a lot about how to get to the big leagues and how to deal with difficult situations where things are out of your control You may think you belong in the big leagues and you re not It doesn t help to be bitter about it just try to work as hard as you can to get back Orr is convinced he never would have experienced life in the major leagues had he not learned different positions in the field First it was shortstop and second then third before getting thrown to the outfield In the majors Orr has appeared in at least one game at second short third left field and right field Versatility I wouldn t be playing anymore if I couldn t play multiple positions In the minor leagues with the Braves I wasn t a prospect by any means I was a backup minor league player he said If I didn t learn how to play other places there was no need for me really The biggest thing is a manager has to believe in you to put you out there so you have to prove to your manager that you can get the job done Phillies manager Charlie Manuel had kept his eye on Orr when the player was with the Braves and Nationals and liked what he saw He s a baseball player He has talent Manuel told the Phillies official website this past April noting he liked Orr s defensive versatility With the way baseball is now it s very important to play multiple positions I was impressed with the way he played at spring training Every time I looked up he was wearing

  • Snider belongs with Jays in middle of order | CBC Sports
pitch most supporters bought into But the decision to demote Snider is hardly consistent with the patience dictum that the club sold to their fan base It s hard to think of a Jay that has been asked to alter their swing more than Snider In 2009 manager Cito Gaston seemed to be in the young slugger s ear after every at bat and heading into this season Snider was asked to work on turning on fastballs Now with opponents serving him a steady diet of breaking pitches the team is asking him to change his swing again So if Snider looks confused at the plate you can understand why and the Jays have to assume some of the blame for this At some point the Jays have to stop tinkering and see what kind of hitter Snider can be Making the demotion even more baffling is that Snider is now at AAA Las Vegas honing his swing with Chad Mottola Wouldn t it make more sense for Snider to be working with big league hitting coach Dwayne Murphy who s the best batting instructor in the organization Inferior pitching Over the past three seasons Snider has proven that he can hammer minor league pitching so it s difficult to comprehend how sending him to a hitter s park to bat against inferior pitching will aid his development Further complicating matters is that there are five active outfielders and two more on the disabled list on the Las Vegas roster How are the Jays going to ensure that Snider gets enough at bats when they also have to find playing time for Scott Podsednik Dewayne Wise Eric Thames and Adam Loewen Perhaps most perplexing is that while Snider competes in Las Vegas valuable big league at bats are being wasted on Juan Rivera Corey Patterson and Mike McCoy three players not in the Jays long term plans In a conference call last Friday Anthopoulos told reporters he had an obligation to win games right now and that Snider wasn t helping the team offensively He may be right but does anyone truly believe that the Jays are better with Rivera Patterson or McCoy in left field than Snider Keep in mind that even with a 184 batting average Snider had driven in 12 runs which led the team for a good portion of the season A hard worker Snider had wholeheartedly embraced Jays manager John Farrell s aggressive approach on the base paths swiping five bases in 25 games And with three outfield assists prior to his demotion he had also improved defensively Anthopoulos has said that he still sees Snider as a middle of the order guy in the future But one has to wonder how Snider would have fared this season if the Jays would ve batted him ahead of Jose Bautista With Bautista hitting behind him and Rajai Davis one of the American League s best base stealers batting in front of him Snider would ve seen

  • Adam Loewen: Great story, unclear future | CBC Sports
a process that would take 18 months or to retire and live off of the 3 2 million US signing bonus he collected as the Orioles first pick fourth overall in 2002 draft Rare transformation But those who watched the six foot six hurler swing a bat during his three years with the Canadian national junior team knew that there was another option and so did Loewen So to the surprise of many the laid back lefty embarked on a comeback as a position player a rare transformation that the legendary Babe Ruth made in 1919 and only Rick Ankiel has succeeded at in the modern era Loewen s chances of resurrecting his big league career were much greater as a pitcher Left handed hurlers are always in demand So it s a testament to his determination and love of the game that Loewen already a millionaire who had tasted the spoils of major league life for parts of three seasons was willing to start his career again in the lower minors After being released by the Orioles in October 2008 Loewen was signed to a minor league deal by the Jays The Jays assigned him to Class A Dunedin of the Florida State League in 2009 where Loewen struggled hitting only 236 with four homers while striking out 114 times in 103 games But the Jays stuck with him and he was promoted to AA New Hampshire in 2010 where his batting average would improve to 246 and he would belt 13 homers but he still struck out 142 times in 129 contests Loewen says it wasn t until after the 2010 campaign when he went to the Arizona Fall League that something clicked and he found his swing In 14 games with the AFL s Peoria Javelinas Loewen hit 333 and belted five homers against some of the top pitching prospects in baseball He would also bat 355 in nine games in the Dominican Winter League Still his performance wasn t good enough to convince Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos to protect him in the Rule 5 draft and any big league team could ve selected Loewen and paid the Jays 50 000 for him this off season Breakout season Fortunately for Toronto Loewen wasn t chosen and he proceeded to enjoy a breakout season in AAA Las Vegas hitting 306 with 17 homers and a 377 on base percentage earning himself a call to the parent club two weeks ago During his three year transformation into a position player Loewen has showcased plate discipline speed a strong arm and versatility in the field he manned all three outfield positions and played first base this season This versatility combined with his determination tools and athleticism make him a valuable asset So far he has three hits in 10 at bats as a Jay but at this time he will head into spring training next season set to battle Eric Thames Travis Snider and Rajai Davis for playing

  • Talent, coaching not the problem with Canadian hoops | CBC Sports
ve already got a fat NBA contract on the table And I don t mean injury risk or insurance either It assists next to nothing in terms of player development the way playing hockey for Canada does and it certainly doesn t anoint one to that sort of canonization Like most sports organizations in this country Canada Basketball is pathetically underfunded For quick hit evidence of this visit their website More public money needs to go to supporting amateur sports in this country I m not saying a lot But look at Australia s success in various sports and their lower childhood obesity rates It s not that hockey gets federal money either it simply attracts a truckload of private sector support because it s a cash cow And despite all the statistics telling us how fast they re growing basketball and soccer are not Throw politics into the fray and you have a toxic mix It s easy to throw Rautins under the bus You can question his x s and o s and wonder aloud if he mismanaged the Samuel Dalembert thing But in retrospect he like Levon Kendall Jevohn Shepherd and the rest of them must be given so much respect for going out there and trying with the odds clearly stacked against them Their reward Nothing Anger from some prose from a handful of media types and the indifference of millions In reality Rautins is one of the good things about Canada Basketball He s poured his sweat into the program since he was a teenager and when politics struck again in 2004 05 he simply answered the call and coached his country Should he have been a bench boss with absolutely no coaching experience Probably not But then Canada Basketball executive director Fred Nykamp shouldn t have created the opening in the first place When he let Jay Triano go in late 2004 Nykamp s flawed reasoning was that Triano s assistant coaching job with the Raptors would interfere They thought it would be better for me to devote my full time to the Raptors and to have a little bit more family time Triano said at the time I appreciate them looking out for me he not so subtly added For the record Nykamp left Canada Basketball in 2007 and took a similar job with the Canadian Soccer Association only to sue them when they reneged on hiring him The CSA s problems are well documented also It s this type of fiasco that is the calling card of the politics of sports not called hockey in this country Of course the silver lining to all of this is the talent we are now producing in basketball and soccer for that matter is basically unprecedented in Canadian history The question as always is will these players step up and represent Nash peeved over Triano s release said sayonara to the program Jamaal Magloire for reasons truly known only to him and according to some
