  • Cvitkovic: Raonic, Canada on verge of global legitimacy
favourite to move on It s a lot of pressure for a mostly inexperienced roster to be sure But now is the time for Raonic to resume his climb to stardom and for Canada to slip on its dancing shoes Not having played competitive tennis since a nasty spill forced him out of Wimbledon on June 22 Raonic made the mature decision to rest and rehabilitate with patience following hip surgery His timely return to the lineup provides Canada with an instant edge However it s a real test for the rising star from Thornhill Ont because his comeback starts with five set rubbers found only in Davis Cup and Grand Slams Toss in a bout of a stomach virus and Raonic s return represents a major challenge He has had a bit of a bug back since Wednesday night Canadian captain Martin Laurendeau said He is in the process of recovering and getting his strength back If he continues to progress the way he is Thursday he should be good to play if he wants to Friday Very fortunate to have Milos The key for Raonic on court is his newfound maturity He must utilize his weapons yet realize it s going to be a long grind Raonic can serve upward of 241 kph but a match cannot be won with a couple of aces in the opening set Playing Davis Cup on the road is not unlike playing NHL hockey in the opposition barn stick to your game plan and let the initial hoopla subside no matter how successful your opponent at the outset Even not match ready Raonic if healthy should defeat Israelis Dudi Sela and Amir Weintraub in singles We re very fortunate to have Milos on the team Laurendeau noted It really looked bad after the first few months from his injury But he had Davis Cup on the top of his calendar his agenda He has done everything he could He really wanted to be here for this chance to make this World Group and lead the team to get another win I think the key success for him was having this target date This date forced him to really push hard and it s really paid off for him He has put himself in this position where his hip is not a factor Raonic not alone The good news for Canadian tennis fans is that Raonic is not alone He has a decent group of singles players behind him including Pospisil The soft spoken 21 year old from Vernon B C has enjoyed a nice run himself this season and is riding great momentum heading into the weekend Pospisil not only qualified for the U S Open but reached the second round before losing to world No 26 Feliciano Lopez of Spain in four sets the last two in tiebreaks Earlier this summer Pospisil upset No 24 Juan Ignacio Chela in the first round of the Rogers Cup and advanced to the semifinals

  • Canada's new cricket captain just getting started
Track Field Home Opinion Video Photos Track Field on CBC Canada s new cricket captain just getting started By Nigel Reed for CBC Sports Posted Jul 27 2011 8 51 AM ET Last Updated Jul 27 2011 9 04 AM ET Related Related Links Bagai steps down as Canada s cricket captain BIO Jimmy Hansra More from Nigel Reed No regrets for Captain Canada Big win for cricket s Little Master Journey s end for Canada s World Cup cricketers Does Canada belong at Cricket World Cup Jimmy Hansra impressed at the World Cup Lakruwan Wanniarachchi Getty Images For a kid from a family which doesn t play sport Jimmy Hansra has done alright For a kid who didn t play cricket seriously until he got to university Canada s new captain has made exceptional progress in a short space of time Hansra a 26 year old middle order batsman and occasional offspin bowler has succeeded his teammate Ashish Bagai as skipper of Canada s national team After enjoying a successful Cricket World Cup earlier this year Hansra has just returned from Lauderhill Fla where he led Canada to victory in the ICC Americas Championship Impressive stuff for a player dismissed for a second ball duck in his Canadian senior debut less than two years ago Perhaps we should not be surprised Hansra s rise in cricketing circles has been anything but conventional Jimmy Hansra is an occasional offspinner for Canada Matthew Lewis Getty Images I made a thousand runs with a 3 bat he laughed remembering his formative years in the game For a man born in the northern Indian city of Ludhiana where he lived until the age of 14 when his family immigrated to Canada it is mildly shocking to hear cricket was not his first love I played soccer and basketball Hansra recalled of his high school days in Penticton B C Nobody knew anything about cricket They thought I was talking about insects Hansra was a useful striker and leading scorer for Pen High before the big city beckoned He remembers padding up for the first time as recently as 2004 Hansra had moved to Vancouver to study structural engineering at UBC Cricket was a weekend sport with Abbottsford CC that slotted conveniently with his academic work It didn t take long for his talent to catch the eye Hansra rose through the ranks of the league and provincial teams before joining the national team in 2009 Four years ago I was playing Division 3 cricket in Abbottsford Today I m captain of Canada he enthused as though he can hardly believe it himself Certainly Hansra enhanced his credentials at the recent Cricket World Cup He made 43 versus Pakistan and followed that with successive knocks of 70 against both Kenya and New Zealand When Bagai decided to stand down as captain after the tournament Hansra s name was at the top of a very short shortlist I m honoured more than surprised he said

  • Robinson: Continental divide hurts Solheim Cup
status is red herring Spittle finds success on Champions Tour Woods works to restore roar Weir puts injury plagued season behind him Yani Tseng of Taiwan is the world s No 1 but excluded in the Solheim Cup which pits Americans against Europeans Darren Carroll Getty Images Just as the women s golf world is abuzz about Lexi Thompson s exploits the 16 year old won the Navistar Classic in Alabama the LPGA is faced with a harsh reality at the Solheim Cup in Ireland With the biennial event poised to take place at Killeen Castle one has to feel a tad sorry about the bad luck it is having First Ireland the host nation has no participant in the matches an unfortunate reality considering Irish men have won six of the past 18 major championships The lack of a local draw could dull the atmosphere though Irish golf fans will surely show some love for the European team if it plays well Meet the Thompsons Lexi Thompson is just 16 but her golf exploits have resonated for close to five years now She first qualified for the U S Women s Open in 2007 at the age of 12 A year later at the Canadian Women s Open her older brother Nicholas chuckled I have won a million bucks and all everyone wants to talk about is my kid sister Nicholas in fact won nearly 2 million US that year including 182 500 US for a T5 at Glen Abbey in Oakville Ont having earned his PGA Tour card with a playoff win over David Morland of North Bay Ont in a Nationwide Tour event Nicholas career has slumped he was forced back to the Nationwide Tour this season and hasn t played particularly well but the kid sister has grown up Sort of Lexi 16 is the youngest player in LPGA history to win a multi round event having captured the Navistar Classic this past weekend Lexi eclipsed the record held by Paula Creamer by some two years Even before her victory Lexi had shown she belongs with several high finishes playing on sponsor s exemptions LPGA rules prevent her from playing full time until she turns 18 Another Thompson sibling Curtis 19 attends Louisiana State on a golf scholarship Robinson The bigger problem facing the Solheim Cup is that doesn t include the dominant continent in women s golf Asian golfers are not represented To that end the Solheim Cup has whipped up an almost perfect storm with bad timing Created in 1990 to give the women pros the same type of competition that Ryder Cup had on the men s side perfectly understandable it was working just fine highlighted by the Annika Sorenstam juggernaut for the Europeans and a typically great roster of players for the Americans Enter Se Ri Pak Women s golf in Korea was booming in the late 1990 s and exploded soon after Pak won a pair of majors in 1998 Before

  • Q&A: Dan Loiselle on 25 years calling thoroughbreds
you say Blue and white checks that s Secretariat Turquoise with gold dots that s Northern Dancer And you memorize a field that could be as many as 14 In fact at the Queen s Plate this year we had 17 You memorize those horses until they go to the gate you call the race and then you immediately forget about them and memorize another field of 14 It gets difficult sometimes when horses are in tight quarters Unlike harness racing there s no sulky separating these horses so sometimes they get going into the turn and there s four or five abreast and you re looking just for a glimpse of a sleeve colour or a cap colour that you can identify the horses I use a set of high powered binoculars called Canon Image Stabilizer binoculars They re expensive as heck they re like 2 000 but there s a little stabilizer button on top and you hit this butotn and it stabilizes the image like a television camera so when the horses are on the turf course which is the furthest away from me you can almost see the sweat on the horse s neck They re that great Q How much do you improvise Moreso over the years I like to editorialize a little bit and let poeple know how horses are travelling Horses can tell you a lot just by watching at them You see a horse moving around a turn his ears right up in the air that horse is saying to the jockey OK what do you want me to do next I m happy A horse s ears are pinned back against its neck he s not a happy animal out there He might be fully extended or just not comfortable in his circumstances or he might be in crowded quarters and not comfortable with that And a jockey s body language If he s sitting there frozen on a horse and they re coming to the top of the stretch it gives me the impression he s got a lot of horse under him If he s scrubbing as they say or pushing on the horse s neck then he s asking his horse for more and he might be empty so I like to editorialize a bit But I don t like to do it at the expense of the race The story is the race The story isn t the announcer so you want to complement it you don t want to become the show as far as I m concerned Q Do you plan ahead or think of set phrases for key moments or do you just live in the moment I ve got a great friend who calls races in New York in fact Saratoga in upstate New York His name is Tom Durkin called the Breeders Cup for 20 some odd years He has a book where he compiles phrases for different spots in the race

Facebook CBC Sports Daniel Nestor will be honoured with a star on Canada s Walk of Fame in Toronto on Oct 1 Julian Finney Getty Images Pretty much the only person who might not think Daniel Nestor deserves to be on Canada s Walk of Fame is the man himself Nestor joins astronaut Dr Roberta Bondar music icon Burton Cummings actress Sandra Oh funny man Russell Peters actor Ryan Reynolds I loved Van Wilder and literary great Mordecai Richler as this year s honoured inductees All incredibly gifted Canadians in their respective disciplines Nestor is the only one who can add the popular acronym GOAT Greatest Of All Time There is no denying that the Yugoslavian born yet immensely proud Canadian is the most successful tennis player this country has ever produced Just don t ask Nestor I spent five great years working with Chief After winning Wimbledon in 2008 I picked him up in my beat up Saturn to take him on a Toronto media tour and despite becoming just the fourth man in the Open Era to complete the career Golden Slam ie all four Grand Slam title and an Olympic gold medal he honestly couldn t understand why all the hype Nestor was just going about his business collecting trophies 73 and counting and prize money nearly 10 million in career earnings and moving onto the next tournament It s just what he does Nestor has never been one to enjoy the attention After winning five ATP Masters 1000 events and his second straight Wimbledon crown in 2009 he asked me why we needed to do a media event It s not like it s hockey he said Nobody really cares I beg to differ At Tennis Canada we often spoke of the Mike Weir factor and our readiness for that defining moment for the victory the country stops and celebrates But we sometimes overlooked that we had benefitted from roughly 20 years of those moments thanks to the consistent world class achievements of Daniel Nestor Yes the infrastructure programs and partnerships have flourished because of the strong leadership at the national sport federation But the real reason why Canadian tennis has experienced tremendous growth in participation is partly related to the success enjoyed by Nestor considered one of the greatest doubles players in the history of the sport Singles tennis may be sexier But most of the 4 5 million Canadians who pick up a racquet do so with a partner Some argue that Carling Bassett Seguso is deserving of Canada s top tennis honour she reached the Top 10 in women s singles after all but Bassett Seguso managed just three wins on tour She and other Canadians be it Grant Connell Helen Kelesi Lorne Main Glenn Michibata Andrew Sznajder even Milos Raonic will be remembered as terrific tennis talents But none compare to Nestor Plus he shows no sign of slowing down Nestor has won a Grand Slam doubles title in each of the
