  • Khalif Mitchell fills need for Argonauts at training camp
team that leaves his defensive linemates in one on one situations Mitchell had 15 tackles and two sacks in 12 games last season with B C and over three years with the Lions registered eight sacks and 54 tackles in 34 career games He was a CFL all star in 2011 and helped B C win the Grey Cup that year but made headlines for all the wrong reasons last season He was suspended for two games by the CFL for violently hyper extending the arm of Edmonton offensive lineman Simeon Rottier during a game July 20 On Sept 25 the league fined Mitchell an unspecified amount for making multiple throat slashing gestures during a win over the Eskimos The following month Mitchell was fined and suspended again for violating the CFL s social media policy Free spirit However there s much more to Mitchell than just football The native of Virginia Beach Va is definitely a free spirit and has an ear for music having taught himself how to play the piano But not everyone in B C was a fan of Mitchell Shortly after he was dealt to Toronto Lions running back Andrew Harris tweeted Good riddance However Milanovich downplayed Mitchell s past saying the defensive lineman has a clean slate with him With any player I evaluate them on the history I have with them Milanovich said When they get here we start from scratch and I try to make my own decisions and I try to do that over a period of time We have a special group here and hopefully he feels that way Mitchell said the 2012 season was a clear indication he s human I think moreso than anything it just made me look more real he said It made me look more like the average person that goes into a house and when they go in the house they have problems when they go back outside nobody knows those problems It s just that I m in a position where everybody gets to see my problems What I ve done is take the initiation to just open myself up I don t try to go and hide because if you go and hide then people come looking But if you show them everything you are what you are And Mitchell said he s comfortable allowing people to see what he s all about I am not eager to change anyone s perception he said I m more accepting of giving you a token to let you have any perception you would like of me whether it s good bad or indifferent that s your free token After that you are bullying me so therefore after that you ve characterized yourself into a whole other class that I don t want to be in I m accepting of the faults I have as a man as a person as an athlete and I m accepting of the fact those can change with greater

  • Alouettes coach Dan Hawkins has big shoes to fill
talented group of receivers led by S J Green and Jamel Richardson and bolstered by the acquisition of veteran Arland Bruce And they have perhaps the league s best offensive line The defence has some question marks particularly on the line but it is special teams that will likely need the most improvement after an often grim 2012 campaign But Hawkins was most impressed with his player s work habits and attention to detail at the mini camp especially among the veterans There s a tremendous level of talent experience and leadership he said They ve won at the highest level You can have all the talent in the world but if you don t have the right culture you re going to struggle Like Trestman before him Hawkins came to Canada with no experience of the 12 man game Trestman s adaptation took less than a season It remains to be seen how Hawkins adapts to a new game and a new country Many new faces in camp We keep using a saying here blessed are the flexible because they ll never be bent out of shape he said Everything is new That s part of the beauty of it it s football here but it s a whole different brand of football An new staff of assistants join Hawkins for his first season including assistant head coach and offensive co ordinator Mike Miller who has been doing most of the off season work with Calvillo on shaping the attack for 2013 Meanwhile Popp brought in an experienced backup in former Hamilton Tiger Cat Quinton Porter Other veterans signed included defensive backs Byron Parker and Geoff Tisdale and running back Jerome Messam Also in camp will be NFL veteran running back Dominic Rhodes who won a Super Bowl with Indianapolis in 2007 But Popp denied angling to bring popular and oft debated former Denver and New York Jets pivot Tim Tebow to Montreal which holds his CFL rights I can report I ve never had a conversation with him or his agent and I really don t expect to unless I hear them say they have interest in coming to our team said Popp So there s nothing new on that front Battle to backup Calvillo Calvillo can t last forever although he s giving it a good try and the Alouettes know they will need to find his successor one day The battle in camp will be between Porter returning third stringer Josh Nieswander and a Canadian former McMaster star pivot Kyle Quinlan We try to have a plan every year said Popp When the day comes that the star quarterback s not the guy any more whether he retires or injuries force him out you really don t know what you have until the other guy starts playing When they get their chance that s when you find out whether they can do it He likes all three candidates Porter s had some very big games against

  • Stampeders' Jon Cornish motivated by Grey Cup loss
and got them into the Grey Cup Cornish and the Stamps were shut down by the Toronto Argonauts who emerged 35 22 winners Coach John Hufnagel says he wants to once again see Cornish be a factor in each and every game But he adds that he particularly respects the way Cornish bounced back and tried even harder if he had an off game like his minus one yard effort in Week 5 last season Hufnagel also says Drew Tate is definitely the team s No 1 quarterback going into camp He has recovered from a fractured wrist that put backup Kevin Glenn in for the West final and the Grey Cup after Glenn subbed for Tate earlier in the season due to another injury He s ready to play I m ready to have him on the field playing Hufnagel said of Tate although he also expressed a lot of confidence in Glenn and Bo Levi Mitchell as backups Right now quarterback is in my belief a position of strength for us but Drew will be the starter coming into training camp Many newcomers in camp Tate has worked out with a mixed martial arts trainer to improve his core strength but the coach says his No 1 pivot has no desire to climb in the Octagon like Toronto Argonauts running back Chad Owens last season s MVP and all purpose yards leader Owens surprised even the Argos when he entered the cage in Hawaii in April earning a unanimous decision over another MMA newcomer Despite their apparent strength the Stampeders have been bringing a lot of young players into camp this season adding three more Thursday import receiver Donavon Kemp import defensive lineman Aronde Stanton and import defensive back Jerett Sanderson You improve most of the time with your young players said Hufnagel As for holes he has to fill linebacker Marc Calixte retired after last season after playing a major role on special teams We ll have enough fast guys to go down and disrupt things said Hufnagel pointing to a few new additions such as the off season signing of Yannick Carter as well as 2013 draft pick Ben D Aguilar Two players expected to show up at camp still nursing injuries are receiver Johnny Forzani and defensive tackle Etienne Legare Hufnagel hopes Legare will be ready once the season starts but Forzani who had to have surgery to repair a high ankle sprain that didn t heal properly will take longer The Canadian Press 2013 Share Tools Report Typo Send Feedback Latest cfl Stories Hamilton star Chris Williams suspended by Cats after failing to report Star returner receiver Chris Williams did not report for work with the Hamilton Tiger Cats on Sunday and was immediately placed on the suspended list more CFL training camps open The CBC s Steve Armitage sets up the Canadian Football League s training camps with a look at the hopes and expectations for the eight teams including the Grey Cup

  • Masai Ujiri has his work cut out for him | Basketball | CBC Sports
looks like a prodigy So why leave Denver Money Reports indicate Leiweke was true to his word when he said he was throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Raptors or whatever they will be called in 2016 the Ujiri contract worth a rumoured 15 million US over five years As the indomitable Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo reported earlier Stan and Josh Kroenke owners of the Nuggets weren t going to come anywhere close to that As Wojnarowski pointed out Wal mart the heir of which Stan Kroenke is married to didn t become a multi billion dollar operation by overpaying employees And while the delay in Ujiri accepting the Raps offer caused the predictable panic in some Toronto circles he surely felt some loyalty to the Kroenkes This is why he waited until well after they introduced Patrick Roy as coach of the Avalanche which the Kroenkes also own Tuesday on an aside it s a safe bet Roy will not be paid anywhere close to what Ujiri left for no matter how many Stanley Cup rings Patrick has in his ears Low hanging humour aside it raises a valid point Did the Raptors once again overpay for another saviour Download Flash Player to view this content It says here Colangelo was also given a similar five year deal among similar fanfare seven years ago And he actually came with a longer resume and more pedigree And while he legitimately excited Raptors fans immediately by trading Rafael Araujo for two living breathing human beings in Kris Humphries and Robert Whaley it wasn t long after the franchise s only division title in 2007 that he began the osmosis into pariah Ujiri has work cut out for him Being a NBA GM is a veritable minefield and it gets harder when you have a roster like the current Toronto one constructed by Colangelo Dealing Andrea Bargnani is Ujiri s first priority But there s also a theory out there that MLSE may want to blow this whole thing up hence the renaming rumblings So is tanking for Toronto s own Andrew Wiggins or others in the deep 2014 draft in play If that s the case trading Kyle Lowry now might be a good place to start And how will Ujiri s relationship with Colangelo work now It s easy to predict the latter will be on his way out of town soon enough but what if that doesn t happen Colangelo gave Ujiri his start in personnel management work so is it reasonable to wonder if there will be any deference I have already developed a great relationship with Tim Leiweke and I can t wait to get back to Canada to build a team that is poised to take the next step in the NBA Ujiri was quoted in a team media release Friday night As Leiweke told everybody in the media recently the new Raptors GM answers to him and not Colangelo Yet it wouldn t

  • Raptors officially hire Masai Ujiri as new GM
Western Conference helping Ujiri garner the NBA s Executive of the Year honour to go with George Karl s Coach of the Year award But Ujiri was also one of the lowest paid GMs in the league earning less than 1 million US a season a salary commensurate with the Nuggets reputation for paying their front office members below market value Team president Josh Kroenke told The Denver Post a week ago that he and Ujiri had agreed in principle to a contract extension but once the Raptors came calling he felt obliged to let Ujiri interview with his old team I would also like to publicly thank the Kroenkes in Denver for being such a class organization that they would allow Masai to pursue his dream Leiweke said They put him first in all of our discussions Shaping the roster Kroenke worked closely with Ujiri to shape the roster and he could turn to Pete D Allesandro Ujiri s right hand man in Denver to take his boss place D Allesandro also could follow Ujiri to Toronto I appreciate everything Masai has done since re joining the Nuggets in 2010 Kroenke said Over the past two and a half years he and I have spent countless hours working together to tackle some of the toughest challenges in franchise history Is Masai Ujiri the right person to guide the Raptors I have tremendous admiration for him as a colleague and will always consider him to be a great friend The potential for awkwardness exists in Toronto where Bryan Colangelo Ujiri s former boss with the Raptors was recently stripped of final say on basketball matters Leiweke was looking for a new voice to lead the franchise that has missed the playoffs for five straight years There is accountability here and we need a new set of eyes and a new thinking Leiweke said last week But Colangelo s contract was extended and he was moved into a new role as team president something that he admitted made him a little disappointed Ujiri will report to Leiweke and have complete authority on basketball matters Bryan s probably ticked off at me Leiweke said then There s no probably He s ticked off at me This isn t his perfect world either But to his credit he accepts it But Ujiri has plenty of experience navigating difficult situations He took over as GM in Denver on Aug 27 2010 where he was handed the Melo drama with Anthony demanding a trade to the New York Knicks After finally engineering the blockbuster deal that next February Ujiri famously apologized saying We feel we got killed in the trade Win win trade But it turned out to be a win win for both teams Denver landed a bevy of young players trade exemptions and draft picks Ujiri used to retool the roster and the Knicks got a bona fide superstar to build a team around Danilo Gallinari came over in the deal along with
