  • U.S. makes short work of Canada in women's soccer friendly
on Canada Leroux said Canadian defender Lauren Sesselman was born in the U S I thought I dealt with it well American veteran Abby Wambach defended her teammate If you knew some of things that Canadian folks tweet at her that for her was a special moment and that for her was saying Hey look I m here I m on the U S team Wambach said So for her I m proud of her to come on in the time that she had The crowd was arguably one of the most entertaining parts of the match in a sloppy affair that saw the Canadians sag after the first 70 minutes I was honestly dying laughing the entire time McLeod said of the goal kick count The crowd was awesome I know Canadian fans sometimes are too friendly but I don t think they were too friendly today Insane atmosphere Added Sinclair We had heard they were going to do that it was kind of funny The atmosphere is insane to play in front of It was really neat that part They cheered us on right to the end right to when we got off the field and as a team we re proud of our performance but disappointed for our fans that came out It s tough to swallow a 3 0 defeat even though it didn t feel like that The Americans did a decent job of keeping Sinclair under wraps The Canadian star finally got free for a decent shot on net in the 48th minute but fired it over the net Canada s best scoring chance came in the 90th minute when national team newcomer Tiffany Cameron had an open shot from just outside the six yard box that she fired wide right of the net At the other end of the field 17 year old rookie defender Kadeisha Buchanan the only starter who wasn t on last summer s Olympic team showed why Herdman is such a big fan She s unbelievable Herdman said She owned Abby Wambach today Sorry Abby I m proud of her she shined a light today for any kid in this country to say look no matter what background you come from you can play in front of 23 000 and play like that wow Buchanan got in the way of what looked like a clean breakaway for Morgan in the first half She cleared a ball off the goal line a minute later Sunday s grudge match the Canadian players had been saying all week was as much about thanking their fans for the outpouring of support as it was about getting a result against their southern foe BMO Field was a sea of red and white for the game that sold out in less than two hours Young girls dressed in soccer jerseys tiny Canadian flags tucked into their hairbands filled the stands It appeared there wasn t a person in the south grandstand that wasn t waving

partisan home crowd as it begins the serious preparation of hosting the next Women s World Cup in two years time Canada needs to shift this monkey off its back It hasn t beaten the U S since 2001 and a victory would garner much needed media attention More importantly it needs to prove to itself and the world of women s soccer it has a chance to compete with the best Head coach John Herdman understands the importance of this encounter The man who ultimately led Canada to the Olympic podium wants his players to make a statement and demonstrate that performance against the Americans was not a one off He is likely to select a team largely comprising tried and trusted senior internationals The old guard will be out in force Sinclair Diana Matheson and Karina Le Blanc will form the spine of the team Even Melissa Tancredi has been coaxed out of retirement for the occasion Herdman will need every bit of experience he can find to try and keep the Americans at bay They are too good too fast and too clinical to be underestimated in any way Download Flash Player to view this content Future considerations But Herdman is facing a dilemma He knows sooner or later he has to give youth its head At some stage the younger quicker but less experienced players have to be exposed to exactly this kind of opponent in readiness for the Women s World Cup in 2015 Herdman watched from close quarters as Canada self destructed in Germany two years ago At that tournament he was coaching New Zealand a team with lesser ability than Canada but which acquitted itself far more ably than Carolina Morace s demoralized and deflated troops Herdman has to blood the likes of Adriana Leon Kadeisha Buchanan Tiffany Cameron and others against the elite women s teams to assess their true potential Only by doing so can he obtain a clear idea of what he has to work with in the build up to 2015 Such a policy may yield disappointing results in the interim At a time when the CSA wants its women s team to be as successful and thus as marketable as possible Herdman is caught between a rock and a hard place From the big picture perspective the annual Four Nations Cup in China and the Cyprus Cup don t matter The end game here is for Herdman to produce a well balanced competitive roster in two years time so that Canada is not the first team to be eliminated from its own World Cup If and when Canada faces the U S at the FIFA Women s World Cup in 2015 then and only then can we talk about a rematch End of Story Content Back to accessibility links Story Social Media Share Tools Report Typo Send Feedback End of Story Social Media Prev Soccer s Canadian Championship still has bite About the Author Nigel Reed Nigel brings

their eyes out when we won about how great it made them feel When we were in London I m not sure we really knew what was going on here But when we landed back in Canada with all the media and all the people waiting for us it was like nothing I ve ever seen TSN s Luke Wileman the man who called the play by play of the game will be forever linked to the Matheson goal His single word cry of Matheesssson as she calmly finished the ricocheted shot put an exclamation point on one of Canada s great sporting moments When I realized that would be the moment the team would win bronze there was a great sense of pride in what they had managed to achieve It was an incredible story after the controversial heartbreaking way they lost to the United States in the semifinals a few days earlier Wileman said It was fantastic to see how the performance from the team throughout the Olympics brought the nation together and having the honour to call that moment in Canadian soccer history was such a privilege and one of the most special moments in my broadcasting career Pressure on Former national team player and assistant coach Andrea Neil was on hand for the disappointment of the 2011 Women s World Cup where Canada lost all three of its matches and viewed this year as a holistic cleansing moment for the squad A lot of times to find success you have to first go through struggles And there is no doubt that at the World Cup we struggled Neil said But having said that the beautiful success of last summer was not just a success on the field It got people enraptured by the moment and it became a water cooler conversation What makes it even more remarkable was it didn t matter if it was men s or women s soccer it was just a proud Canadian moment Herdman said that more than anything that s what the team set out to do They felt like they had something left to prove after the World Cup Herdman said This sounds corny but this team genuinely wanted to leave a legacy With legacies come big expectations and heading towards the next World Cup one that Canada will host the pressure will be on this team Herdman for one welcomes it I think the attitude now is bring it on I think that s going to be the mindset from here on in Forget your fears We ve shown we can do it now We ve broken through that barrier So as far as the World Cup is concerned bring it on The star of the Olympic tournament and now a celebrity in her own right Christine Sinclair who was the pick of CBCSports ca readers for Canadian athlete of the year and the choice of Canadian sports media members as the Lou Marsh Award winner shares the

  • Christine Sinclair's suspension wasn't for comments to media
highlights FIFA s convoluted ways FIFA suspends Canada s Christine Sinclair 4 games What do you think about Christine Sinclair s suspension It was Christine Sinclair s actions that got her into trouble not her words The 29 year old Canadian women s soccer captain was suspended four games and fined approximately 3 500 last week for what a FIFA disciplinary panel deemed unsporting behaviour toward officials at the London 2012 Summer Games As it turns out the ban wasn t because of her scathing comments to the media after but because of her actions toward an official following the match On Monday Sinclair wasn t ready to offer up any apologies I don t regret what I said she told reporters during a conference call We just lost the chance of playing for an Olympic gold medal and that s a dream that all of us have It was a very intense time and I was very emotional and I wouldn t want to change that I don t regret what I said We just lost the chance of playing for an Olympic gold medal and that s a dream that all of us have It was a very intense time and I was very emotional and I wouldn t want to change that Canada s Christine Sinclair The Canadian Soccer Association will pay the fine but is still awaiting a written explanation from FIFA The CSA said it expects the results within the next 10 days and also said it can t discuss Sinclair s comments due to the disciplinary process Sinclair reiterated Monday she has no intent to appeal the ban and said her comments were made during an important and emotional moment and just wants to move on I d like to acknowledge FIFA s decision and it is my intent to accept it she said As a player you just want to move on as well as I want my team to move on Sinclair made some pointed post match remarks directed at referee Christiana Pedersen after Canada s controversial 4 3 semifinal loss to the United States in extra time a game in which she felt her squad was treated unjustly We feel like we didn t lose we feel like it was taken from us she said shortly after the match ended It s a shame in a game like that that was so important the ref decided the result before it started Should Christine Sinclair have apologized No malicious intent The Burnaby B C native who led the tournament in goals with six in six contests did everything she could to help her team win that game Sinclair scored a hat trick but it was ultimately the U S who went on to win the game and eventually capture the gold medal However she added Monday she didn t truly believe Pedersen had any malicious intent towards the Canadian squad which ended up winning a historic bronze It was the first medal

has requested the reasons for judgment and will not comment until they are received and reviewed The CSA s communications manager Michèle Dion told CBC News that Sinclair who lives in California would not immediately speak to the media The CSA later issued a news release saying Sinclair would address the media on a conference call on Monday Sinclair s mother Sandra told CBC News that she hadn t talked to her daughter and wouldn t comment on the situation Peter Montopoli general secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association said earlier this week that FIFA s disciplinary panel met last Friday Montopoli coincidentally was in Zurich at the time and asked whether he could take part He was told no representation was allowed with the explanation that the panel was reviewing many cases and not just Canada s Sinclair was the only Canadian player under scrutiny Long ban The ban is one of the longest in recent Canadian memory Fullback Paul Stalteri was suspended for four games after throwing a water bottle off the bench in protest of a nullified goal in a 1 1 World Cup qualifying draw with Honduras in Edmonton in 2004 His red card carried an automatic one game ban and FIFA added a three game suspension on top of it The Canadian women were upset about a call against goalkeeper Erin McLeod that led to Abby Wambach s game tying penalty in the 80th minute McLeod was whistled for handling the ball for longer than six seconds The Americans were awarded a free kick inside the box which bounced off the arm of defender Marie Eve Nault resulting in the penalty shot It s a rule that none of the Canadian players nor coach John Herdman nor even American coach Pia Sundhage had ever seen enforced The Canadian women don t have any games scheduled in the immediate future They are slated to reunite in December for a camp in advance of the Four Nations Cup in China in January The Cyprus Cup follows that Several Canadians took to Twitter to criticize FIFA for suspending Sinclair Support for Sinclair Sinclair suspension dumbest thing I ever heard No guts to do it during the games what s the point after wrote Canadian hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser Former Canadian and Olympic freestyle skiing gold medallist Jennifer Heil was equally angered Outrageous FIFA suspends Christine Sinclair for four games for displaying unsporting behaviour to match officials Sinclair s teammate Emily Zurrer also chimed in Really FIFA she tweeted Broadcaster and former men s national team player Jason deVos was also critical of the decision Christine Sinclair fined and suspended four matches by FIFA for unsporting behaviour Insert joke about FIFA here he said He added another tweet moments later Imagine if FIFA had made that decision just after the incident had occurred Yet another black mark for FIFA shambles Fans were also upset by FIFA s decision A Facebook page titled Christine Sinclair movement to help pay FIFA
