  • Jack McInerney gives Union draw with TFC
Zealand substitute Jeremy Brockie made the goal with a fine swerving cross from the right flank The 21 year old Osorio who won his first cap for Canada earlier in the week flung himself at the ball and scored with a flying header It was the third goal of the season for the native of Brampton Ont who earned his second start after a fine showing off the bench last week in New England The tying goal came just as regulation time wound down prompting a groan along press row from a group of reporters who have seen no shortage of late goals leaked by Toronto A long throw in by Sheanon Williams was headed away by Toronto s Jeremy Hall but only as far as McInerney whose low shot through traffic beat Joe Bendik as three defenders rushed at the shooter One can wonder how a defence could leave McInerney alone given he entered the game tied for the lead in league scoring with nine goals McInerney also scored in the 94rd minute on April 13 to earn Philadelphia a 1 1 tie with Toronto when the teams met at PPL Park Ill tempered affair The young striker named MLS Player of the Month in April and May came into the game leading the league with five game winning goals The contest was an ill tempered affair with plenty of shoving and three yellow cards for each side Philadelphia goalie Zac MacMath and Henry were both yellow carded in the 27th minute after a shoving match that saw MacMath object to Henry getting in his way while trying to kick the ball away Hall said Toronto s strategy was to get into MacMath s face We d seen the tape from previous games we thought if we can put him under pressure and get into his head a little mentally we d be all right And that s what we did Nelsen accused MacMath of assaulting his player but said he was let off the hook by an inexperienced referee That s a sending off he said We always seem to get the inexperienced referees he said That s life Someone s going to have them But they keep making inexperienced decisions And we seem to be on the end of them Henry was sent off when he scythed down Danny Cruz on the edge of the box 14 minutes later It seemed a clear foul by a defender clearly beaten on the play Koevermans said the linesman made the case to the referee for the second yellow I think it was a good call it was the correct call he said It was a yellow card Koevermans was introduced for Toronto in the 86th minute returning after more than 10 months out due to knee surgery Nelsen said he made the move taking off Brockie to have fresh legs up front and help stop the Union from firing the ball back into their end after clearances It s

  • Karrie Webb rallies for 1st LPGA win in 2 years
was extremely tough and I m just glad that I pulled it out I think coming down I knew I needed to make one birdie I thought because I didn t think I could just par in and feel comfortable so great birdie on the last Shanshan Feng was second Feng who led by three shots entering the final round struggled in the wind and finished with a 75 She had two double bogeys on the front 9 and gave away the lead with bogeys on the 11th and 13th holes Feng who became the first Chinese player to win an LPGA Tour event and a major when she captured the LPGA Championship last year gave credit to Webb I would say 68 is a really really great score for today said Feng who broke in a new set of clubs this week I would say actually four over didn t sound too bad to me But maybe that s why I ve never played well in the British Open Yet Canadian content Hamilton s Alena Sharp 78 and Sara Maude Juneau 74 of Fossambault Que finished at 9 over in a group tied for 64th while Jessica Shepley 75 of Oakville Ont was a shot further back in a tie for 69th The final round played out somewhat like a U S Open with the elements the dried out fast greens and the fescue lined fairways working like a demolition derby on the 74 players who qualified for the final round Webb who got back into contention with a 69 in the second round made her move early rolling in a 25 foot birdie putt on the difficult 420 yard second hole that might have been the toughest on the course with the wind blowing into the players faces off Reed s Bay She moved into a share of the lead on the par 5 third rolling in a 6 foot eagle I think I knuckle down and focus a lot better when conditions are tough Webb said Feng who fell into a tie with Webb early regained the lead with a short birdie at the eighth hole but bogeys at the 11th and 13th holes put Webb 1 up Webb s birdie at the 18th hole pushed the margin to two shots Feng closed within a shot with a short birdie putt at No 16 but she hit her tee shot in the bunker at the next hole and bogeyed She needed an eagle at the par 5 final hole but had to settle for par Jenny Shin of South Korea who had four straight birdies on the back nine finished fourth at even par after a 70 Rookie Chie Arimura who was tied for the lead on the front nine finished in a group at 1 over Despite a final round 74 Michelle Wie event had her best finish of the year finishing in a group at 2 over Overall I fought hard and I m pretty

  • Matt Kuchar hangs tough, takes lead at Memorial
bogeys late in his round for a 76 and he wasn t all that upset about it Haas was still only three shots back and it wasn t hard to determine that par was a good score Like so many other players Chappell wasn t sure which way the wind was blowing On the 14th hole with a wedge in hand from 105 yards he felt the wind coming into him from the right yet the flag was blowing in the opposite direction I kept saying Wow this is tough here You hit a good shot and end up in a bad spot Chappell said What can I do You ve just got to keep doing it put one foot in front of the other and finish each hole Past winner Justin Rose had a 71 and joined Haas and Matt Jones 70 at 5 under 211 Masters champion Adam Scott had a 69 and was in the group at 4 under that included Charl Schwartzel who was within one shot of the lead after completing the second round Saturday morning The South African bogeyed both par 5s on the back nine and took double bogey on the 14th He had a 41 on the back for a 76 That was still better than Woods whose round was somewhat of a mystery not only because the world s No 1 player was in great form coming into a course where he has won five times but because he was in good position off the tee Woods who started the round on No 10 missed only one fairway on the back nine He took double bogey on the par 3 12th when he was in such a bad spot in the front bunker that he had to play out sideways to the wrong side of a long green and then he three putted On the par 5 15th he pulled his second shot well to the left and then took two chips to get onto the putting surface only for the ball to run through the green He really was fooled on the 18th with a chip that spun back down the hill and a three putt from short range He had three birdies on the front nine to avoid his worst score as a pro That was an 81 at another Muirfield the real one in the third round of the British Open that cost him his best shot at the calendar Grand Slam in 2002 Kuchar surged into the lead with two birdies on the front nine and didn t drop a shot until the ninth hole when he missed the green to the left The wind got him on the 15th when his high fairway metal drifted beyond the bunker and into a hazard that Kuchar didn t know existed leading to bogey He saved par with a 10 foot putt on the par 3 16th and made regulation pars coming in to give himself the 54 hole

  • Shanshan Feng on top at ShopRite LPGA Classic
the highest on tour this season We were all struggling Jeez Louise said Paula Creamer who finished on the cut line after playing two days with Lewis and Suzann Pettersen 10 over I had a triple yesterday and between the three of us we had three or four doubles You don t see that I can t even tell you the last time I had a double let alone a triple But it happens on this golf course I think everybody is taking it seriously but it s hard It s a different monster out there this year In position to win Feng got the best of the monster in putting herself in position to win her second LPGA event This hasn t been the best of years for Feng who won six times in 2012 with three wins coming in Japan and two others on the European tour While she has three top 10 finishes her best finish was a tie for seventh in Texas Feng said a big part of the problem was playing old clubs because she could not get the ones she wanted from her old sponsor Her new Japanese sponsor got her the clubs she wanted a couple of weeks ago She had hoped to play this past week in the Bahamas However she missed the event because of a visa problem that was complicated when a U S Embassy in Japan closed for a few days after receiving a powder in the mail she said Feng had little trouble on the golf course Saturday in stark contrast to most of the field Eight teen players broke par with only one doing it in the afternoon when Lewis first round co leaders Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand and Amanda Blumenherst and Michelle Wie all played Jutanugarn the tour s leading rookie and Haeji Kang of South Korea shared second at 3 under Jutanugarn had a 73 and Kang shot 69 Wie looking for her first LPGA win in the United States rolled in four straight birdies on her back nine and was 4 under until a double bogey bogey finish for a 73 that dropped her to 1 under It was tough out there said Wie who hit a couple of shots into the tall grass It was really tough out there today And I just got a little bit unlucky on the last hole I know I played well today so just got to go out there and just do the same thing tomorrow and hopefully not get into the fescue The 23 year old Wie was tied for sixth with Karrie Webb Hee Young Park and Karine Icher and first round co leader Amanda Blumenherst who finished with a double bogey for a 75 after losing a ball on her last hole There was a lot of movement on the leaderboard with those who finished their rounds in the morning making some big moves Kang jumped from 12th to a tie for second and

  • Tiger Woods struggles, Bill Haas leads at Memorial
an opening round 65 struggled on the greens and was 1 over for his day and three shots behind He had three holes remaining Bubba Watson was at 6 under through 14 holes and his biggest battle was with allergies He wore sunglasses under gathering clouds and kept a wet towel around his neck anything to keep his allergies under control The advantage for those still on the course was the rain delay of 1 1 2 hours It rained hard for a short time which slightly softened the greens and the afternoon starters returned to a course with only a breeze The wind died down made it a lot easier to play the holes Watson said Kyle Stanley also was at 6 under and had five holes remaining McIlroy got the short end on the par 3 12th slightly downhill and over the water The wind not only was strong it was unpredictable McIlroy hit his tee shot and could only watch hopeful it landed somewhere on dry land and in a reasonable spot The horn to stop play sounded moments later Haas has been playing the Memorial since 2005 and he has been coming to Muirfield Village even longer when his father Jay Haas was a regular The son even caddied for the father one year and he received a sponsor s exemption his first year out of Wake Forest Even though I ve never really had great success her personally I love coming back look forward to it every year Haas said And part of it might be I ve always known how much my dad liked it and how well he did here Hopefully I can continue on the weekend and get a better taste in my mouth on how to play it as opposed to just liking it Dry fast course Only six players from the morning round managed to break 70 a testament to a course that is dry and fast especially on the greens The wind was strong early and showed no sign of letting up even after a 20 minute delay in the afternoon as storms threatened The resurgent Robert Karlsson had a 71 and was five shots behind For a short time it looked as though Woods first objective was to stick around for the weekend Along with not making birdies he made a mess of the par 5 15th for the second straight day From the fairway he pulled his approach well left of the green and chipped through the green just into a thick collar of round He chipped out to about 5 feet and his par putt caught the lip and spun some 8 feet away Woods wound up three putting for double bogey from 5 feet It could have been worse Woods made six par putts from the 4 foot to 7 foot range and he wound up at 1 over 145 When he played the Memorial his first full year on tour in 1997 Woods opened
