a man who was sent from God his name was John He came as a witness to testify concerning that light so that through him all men might believe He himself was not the light he came only as a witness to the light The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world John 1 6 9 We usually think of John the Baptist from our Sunday School lessons as that rugged guy who lived in the wilderness dressed in itchy clothes eating locusts and honey And he was that guy the one who baptized Jesus But what an amazing place he is given in John s epic telling of Jesus the Word He is The Witness John is the first human mentioned by name in Jesus story Like the prophets of the Old Testament he was given a specific mission to tell God s people God s message for a specific place and time The people hungry to hear God s voice after 400 years of silence i e no true prophets flocked to hear this radical man s teaching The message You people live in darkness and you ve been waiting for the light Change your ways now because the light is here Repent be baptized and get ready to really see for the first time in your lives Think What would it be like to live your whole life in total darkness underground or something and then one day suddenly see light for the first time How would that change your life Pray Thank God for sending John the Baptist to prepare the way for the light Do swing and I find myself in withdrawal each evening if there is not a game on Baseball can sort of kinda soothe my itch but the Blue Jays are not making that easy at the moment The NFL that wee football league in the US is about to start up again but they have the nasty habit of playing most of their games during church time Hockey is a couple months away but that s a couple months away Well wait that s not entirely true the Swift Current Broncos will be in action soon so there is some light at the end of the hockey tunnel Still good old CFL football is what summertime needs Those extra evenings that don t have meetings are prime candidates to watch other people exercising when I should be exercising Seeing grown men throw themselves literally into other grown men all the while chasing the guy who is holding the off round ball called a football even though the foot and the ball actually only meet about 12 times a game So dear CFL Please note this If you simply added another 5 teams say in Halifax Quebec City Kitchener Saskatoon and oh let s say Kelowna we could have 14 teams which means 7 games per week which means one game per night on TV It ll be worth it at least until hockey season Joell PS You ll have to derive your own spiritual content from this week s epistle Last Sunday s Service Video from Sunday s service Audio from Sunday s service Camp services will himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue he deceives himself and his religion is worthless James 1 26 We re fond of saying Christianity is not religion it s a relationship with God through Jesus And that makes sense We usually think of religion as man trying to reach God Christianity is God taking the initiative to redeem humans adopting us as his children But James is writing to a religious people He doesn t want them to be content in mindlessly following all the rules and regulations of their practice He wants them and us to ask if their worship is changing them And the number one measuring stick for change in humans is the words that come out of our mouths Don t lie to yourselves he says If your religion isn t giving you control over your words if you still spew verbal unkindness immorality deception and hostility then your religion isn t working Think Does your faith practice work Are you finding yourself changed in the way you talk in the words you choose Pray Ask God to help you see how your relationship with him is genuinely changing you to be more like Jesus Do Pay attention to how you speak to others this week Notice anytime your faith is or painting by Rembrandt and a number of items by other artists depicting this story The Gerbens wanted to share their collection so they put it on display at a local college Larry said The artists have ministered to us and we hope their work will minister to others As I wandered through the displays I was touched by the deep need of the prodigal his honest repentance and the beautiful forgiveness of not everybody is experiencing a good Monday Certainly many others are experiencing sorrow hardship poverty bereavement stress crisis sickness or discouragement Life is a patchwork of happy and sad good times and hard It s easy to be thankful on Marvellous Mondays but the challenge is counting our blessings on Melancholy Mondays Terrible Tuesdays or Worse Wednesdays We need to remember that even though life consists of ups and downs mountains and valleys Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever Hebrews 13 8 And we need to remember that at just the right time we will reap a harvest
