    through education to support healthy living for people of all ages Healty Opportunities for Preschoolers HOP Diane Stewart Caregivers of children age 3 to 5 years will walk away with new ideas which integrate literacy healthy eating and physical activity Participants will receive a copy of the HOP Early Learning Practitioners Resource Come ready to learn activities that help you to spend time playfully and productively with children Diane Stewart is an Early Childhood Educator and has worked in the field since 1994 She is currently working as the Manager of Tee Pee Tot Daycare in Cawston B C Block Party Louise Heck There is no toy that brings greater joy or has greater learning value than the old fashioned wooden building blocks Block play helps with social development intellectual growth balance perception and small and large muscle coordination Research has linked block play by young children with improved language and mathematical skills Join Louise for a Block Party and rediscover the joy of learning Louise Heck is a mother of four and a grandmother She began her child care career as a Family Child Care Provider in Alberta and has since obtained her Early Childhood Educator certification with Special Needs and Infant Toddler citations Currently she coordinates the Boundary Child Care Resource and Referral Time and experience has only increased her enthusiasm for children Alphabet Soup Lizanne Eastwood Alphabet Soup is an early literacy program for pre schoolers and their parents or caregivers Children learn about cooking and nutrition songs stories and crafts all centered on a literacy theme These activities include reading recipe cards measuring mixing and listening to stories singing rhymes and songs learning new vocabulary creating alphabet scrapbooks and practicing good manners This is an invaluable program for preparing children for kindergarten Participants in this workshop will explore various print and web based resources dealing with kids in the kitchen talk about nutrition discuss ways to create fun in the kitchen learn new rhymes develop their own picture recipes and measure and mix their own recipe in a jar to take home Lizanne Eastwood is the Family Literacy Coordinator in Grand Forks and the West Boundary working with The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy Her passions include reading cooking and children so the creation of the Alphabet Soup program was a natural fit Lizanne is also a home schooling parent of two teens a Mother Goose Facilitator and works at the Grand Forks Public Library She believes that the more time we spend with our children in the early years playing cooking reading and learning the better prepared they are to live a rich and meaningful life Family Creativity Kelly Moog Experience arts and crafts from a child s perspective Participants in this session will have fun learning why the love of arts crafts for children is in the DOING not the finished product Explore fun and creative activities and take home lots of ideas for you and your child to do together Kelly Moog s

    to focus on their children s assets to create early positive communication mutual respect and trust between parent and child that will last for generations Laurie Rockwell began a very rewarding 25 year career as a family and child service social worker and supervisor in 1972 In 2003 he graduated from Royal Roads University Victoria BC Executive Coaching Program Laurie feels that coaching is the newest and most effective helping profession which works with people s assets not their deficits In 2004 he started his business Know Thyself Coaching As a Life Purpose Coach Laurie helps people develop their own action plan to define who they are and their purpose in life Parenting with Purpose Kelly Moog This workshop will show you how to raise children full of life and spirit maintain your sanity and have fun at the same time Get involved and explore how to bring your deepest values to life in your family Enjoy stories anecdotes and interactive learning experiences as you gain practical tools that bring out the best in you and your child Kelly Moog is and always has been involved with children and families She is a mother aunt foster parent family support worker and friend to many children and families She has facilitated a large variety of parenting classes over the years as well as many different children s groups Currently she is a Communities for Kids community facilitator and for this session will lead a discussion on building relationships within your family Strengthening Attachment Myrna Martin Attachment is the relationship between a parent or caregiver and child This special bonding forms the basis for emotional and physical health learning and the ability to develop healthy relationships This workshop presents information on how attachment is formed and its effect on the developing brain prenatally and through the early years We will discuss ways to recognize and support secure attachment and how to recognize conditions that threaten secure attachment Please note This workshop will be presented over two sessions in the afternoon Myrna Martin has 35 years experience working as a nurse public health nurse and family therapist She was Director of Nelson Mental Health for many years Myrna has been studying and practicing early trauma resolution work with babies and young children for the past twenty years She is currently doing infant child focused family therapy on attachment with pregnant couples and families with children age 12 and under Myrna also works with individuals and groups of adults on early trauma resolution She is a registered clinical counselor and registered craniosacral therapist and teaches seminars in prenatal birth attachment therapy internationally Recreation is M A G I C Carol Flynn Join Carol Flynn in using a hands on approach to investigate the benefits of recreation in the healthy development of children aged 0 6 Carol will demonstrate that with a little M A G I C M ystery A dventure G ames I nspiration and C reativity parents caregivers and educators can daily

    start to read to my child and the answer is NOW It is never too early to begin to instill in your child a love of words A parent is a child s most important teacher you need to seize every opportunity you can to share stories songs and sounds with your child from the moment you first hold them in your arms This one hour presentation will provide suggestions to help you start your child on the pathway to developing a love of reading and will focus on sharing rhymes songs and storytelling Vicky White is the Community Librarian for the Oliver Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library She has been in charge of the children s programs there since 1987 and has presented preschool story times toddler times bedtime story hours summer programs and popular seasonal events She is also a registered Mother Goose program teacher a published author of a local history book and an unpublished author of numerous children s stories that she shares with her program participants Food and Behaviour Edith van de Watering Margie Colcough Did you know that there is a strong connection between the food your child eats and his her behaviour Please join Dr van de Watering and Margie Colclough as they share information about how foods affect the brain and your child s behaviour Food samples will be shared during the talk Dr Edith van de Watering BCRCC is a Dutch registered Health Care Psychologist and Child Youth Psychologist She is a member of the Dutch Neuropsychological Society NVN and the International Neuropsychological Society INS Dr Edith van de Watering pursued her Doctoral Degree in Psychology at the University Brabant 1987 Tilburg Netherlands Currently she works as a Psychologist for the Child Development Centre Penticton and has a private counseling clinic Penticton Naramata Margie Colclough is a speech language pathologist who has been working with children from birth to age 5 for 15 years Her hobby is nutrition and particularly how food affects children s behaviour Spirit Bundles Carmen Pierre Carmen is offering the Spirit Bundles session a guided imagery exercise which gives focus and symbolic meaning to cultural presentations and activities Upon completion of the Spirit Bundles session participants will have had an opportunity to share their experiences and leave with gifts and messages that assist in the overall participation of early childhood development Carmen E Pierre is of Shuswap Okanagan and Collville descent and brings with her cultural teachings and inner wisdom Carmen is a Communities for Kids Aboriginal Community Facilitator 9 Ways to Bring Out the Best in You and Your Child Maggie Reigh Yes It really is possible to raise children full of life and spirit and maintain your sanity at the same time Do you find yourself struggling for control over your children when what you really want to do is empower them and yourself Are you looking for new ways to inspire and motivate your children to achieve their full potential and stand strong
