  • Incontinence and depression
21 October 2010 09 26 Everyone knows how urinary incontinence can affect women s quality of life Women with urinary incontinence avoid social activities where their condition could be noticed they avoid activities inducing urinary leaks they don t seek medical help because they are embarrassed about their situation and feel like nothing can be done about it But besides the impact of urinary incontinence on women s quality of life a study reports that as much as 15 5 of all women with urinary incontinence also suffer from depression It reaches 30 in women ages 18 44 but 9 2 in women without urinary incontinence Studies cannot show clearly that incontinence leads to depression but it appears that both conditions depression and urinary incontinence are often related What can be done about it First women should be informed that there are simple and effective solutions available Then they can talk to their physician about their conditions Physicians should also be invited to better screen their patients with urinary incontinence or depression Together we can give back a quality of life to women suffering from urinary incontinence and depression Add comment Thank you for sharing your experience with other women
