to slow into a more human pace I thought of the girl in the alley with the bags of clothes Her life I thought of the man who slept in the sun unwashed and uncared for lost in old pain and old addiction yet present enough to wish everyone who passed by a Happy Birthday The wanderers and so many of them adrift in a city of unimaginable wealth This is just one element of the vast unique entanglement of this place they now call the Quarters Buddy can you spare few But it s real As my path brought me back to town as I drew closer I could feel the madness increasing the insanity of self obsession and the fierce rush of the drivers around me to get to the next place faster frustration written on their faces Too slow Move it passengers glaring at whoever dared drive a paltry 120 km hour It s a disease An ancient disease where you cease to think of other people as important as worthy as family It s a disease so pervasive so normalized that we don t even think of it Including me There is an old Cree term for this sickness wetigo wee te goh And it is the cause of human suffering It s the beast that takes over us and makes us do and say non human things It changes our eyes and our conversations become a feeding frenzy of disregard sarcasm snide and hurtful tones Or it simply takes over and we live in world where everyone is our enemy especially those closest to us We ignore others we feel superior We lose our soul to wetigo But we can draw out the poison so easily You just cast light on it And so it
