  • Giant Aquarium in Espanola
    have been working on coral reef creations to include a five foot paper mache shark giant crochet algae brain coral felted rocks and silk lace fish Jody Pilon volunteer organizer of the fibre arts portion of the community festival hooked onto the coral reef project when she learned that fibre artists around the world were creating reef structures as one of the largest community engagement art projects in the world The project was originally initiated in 2005 by fibre artists Christine and Margaret Wertheim to bring awareness to the fragility of the coral reef ecosystems Artists around the world are using their talents and skills to address global and environmental issues says Pilon The Coral Reef ecosystems may be far from home but we too share in the protection of our great lake ecosystems and in the health and management of our local and regional lakes rivers and streams The creativity and inspiration generated by this community art project is truly a celebration of collaboration community and social awareness We are excited to house the giant aquarium installation at The Espanola Regional Recreation Complex for the duration of the festival says Dianne Polden Manager of Espanola Leisure Services our community

  • Espanola Receives SPLASH Funding
    Polden Manager of Espanola Leisure Services Given our ongoing challenge to staff the pool and sustain our aquatic programs we applied to the Ontario Sport Recreation Communities Fund for funding to provide training opportunities to increase the capacity of qualified lifeguards and instructors The Ministry of Tourism Culture Sport awarded the Town of Espanola 38 200 for a two year project which will support lifeguard and instructor training as well as the acquisition of new equipment to offer innovative and trending aquatic programs This is a win for our community says Polden this funding will open opportunities to youth and adults wanting to explore careers in lifeguarding This funding will afford us the opportunity to invest in our community and build our capacity for aquatic program delivery Espanola Leisure Services invite the community to fill out an expression of interest application Candidates must be interested in water safety and health and fitness A limited number of candidates will be accepted for the training with the hope of beginning the program in September and completing in June of 2016 Successful completion of the course will not guarantee employment at the Espanola pool but will increase opportunities for general employability throughout the

  • Community Mural to Commemorate Canada's 150th Year
    and territories will be created to include over 80 000 paintings and 150 individual murals There s been interest in the creation of historical murals in our community for years says Cheryl Kennelly Community Economic Development Officer This commemorative project is an opportunity to engage hundreds of volunteers in our community and realize the creation of a mural with the assistance of a professional team Each community mural is made up of 400 750 4 x 4 inch tiles which will be painted by community volunteers of all ages stages and skill levels under the mentorship of the Canada 150 Mosaic Team The result will be a unified community mural 8 x 8 approx in size This is an exciting project for our community says Mayor Piche a chance for residents to come together to create this mural showcasing Espanola s rich heritage is really something opportunities like this don t happen every day and I look forward to seeing the end result The Mosaic team will be visiting the selected communities to create uniquely representational murals Each individual mural will represent a train car which inevitably will join the other murals virtually to form a gigantic train representing the
