  • Why Cell Phones Will Dominate the Future Internet (evanjones.ca)
This paper speculates that in the near future cell phones will become the predominant way of using the Internet Interestingly Keshav predicts that this will lead to deployment of a lot of advanced networking technology that we have been waiting for like IPv6 and quality of service guarantees While I disagree with some of the details I agree with the overall idea and I think his conclusions are somewhat surprising

  • Dynamic Data Visualization (evanjones.ca)
be I run into this issue frequently in my research I normally have a ton of data that is completely useless to me without some kind of processing The most powerful tool I have is GnuPlot plus some scripts I have hacked up myself There have been times where I ve been tempted to try and whip up a PyObjC application to interactively investigate data on my Mac I think

  • Fallout 2 (evanjones.ca)
work just when I was near the end This game is also excellent It uses the same engine as the original so it seems that the developers were able to spend their entire budget at making the world much larger In this sense Fallout 2 is a better game because there is way more to do and many more ways to influence the game world However I don t think

  • CiteULike (evanjones.ca)
been using it for a while now and I am addicted It is a very useful tool that helps me be more productive My favourite feature is also the simplest To post a paper you find the paper on the publisher s web site then use a bookmark CiteULike automatically fills in all the bibliographic details and adds it to your library Another useful feature is that you can export

  • Billion Transistor CPU Architectures (evanjones.ca)
reviews the predictions made seven years ago in an IEEE Computer special issue on future CPU architectures and compares them to what has actually happened It is a nice general overview of the current state of the art in CPU design As an aside I think that CPU architecture research is dead and it is unlikely that any of the architectural changes described in this paper will ever become mainstream

archive 2005 April 14 19 10 I breezed through this book very quickly since it is relatively short at 411 pages This is still good escapist fantasy but this installment was lacking some of the magic of the previous ones
