it s ENTIRE photography department including pulizter prize winners to replace them with Iphone weilding reporters and severely underpaid freelancers The Chicago Sun times was not the only business to make this type of decsion for example CNN fired over 50 photographers and editors in 2011 and began relying more heavily on user submitted images While I understand that times are difficult for print media when they see their advertising rates shrink into non existance the decision to cut on the isual aspect of the newspaper is counter productive as a business model it s a short term gain that will end up hurting the business far more down the road The demand for images has never been higher and studies prove that articles blog posts facebook updates with good images are far more likelly to be read viewed And so Libération s stand against the downward spiral that is the photography industry is a welcome ray of light The front page article for the paper read Libération vows an eternal gratitude to photography whether produced by photojournalists fashion photographers portraitists or conceptual artists Our passion for photography has never been questioned not because it s used to beautify shock or illustrate but because photography takes the pulse of our world To choose Paris Photo s opening day to install these white images highlights our commitment to photography It s not a wake we re not burying the photographic art Instead we give photography the homage it deserves Yet no one can ignore the calamitous situation press photographers now find themselves in especially war photographers who risk their lives while barely making a living And for those whose work went on show today in the Grand Palais thanks to shrewd gallery owners we might think that the odds are in

not possible to take a bad picture Steve McCurry During a skit lampooning the Chicago Sun Times over their decision to replace Pulitzer award winning photographers with IPhone wielding reporters Steven Colbert jokingly refers to a fictitious all a powerful Pulitzer Prize Filter in Instagram and transforms a really horrible headshot into Afghan Eyes an award winning portrait by Steve McCurry featured on the cover of National Geographic Most of this misconception is due to television shows like CSI Miami and advertising from the camera manufacturers It s true that Photoshop or similar other product can be used to ENHANCE a SOLID photo but the old adage of garbage in garbage out still holds true and in many cases work that could be done in Photoshop could be done far more efficiently BEFORE the shutter release is ever pressed One example I like to use is blemish removal A good makeup job can take about 10 minutes but the work is good for every shot afterwards removing blemishes and smoothing out the skin in post processing using Photoshop or other specialised programs can take 15 20 minutes PER PICTURE If there are 20 pictures in that series shoot the total time to fix the picture comes up to 5 to 7 hours of works versus 10 minutes doing makeup Another good example is background removal to get pure white or black background Doing a proper setup for a white or black background can take 5 minutes removing the background in post can EASILY take over 45 minutes PER PICUTRE 15 hours of work on a 20 image shoot instead of 5 minutes doing a proper setup and NEVER looks as natural as doing it in camera Of course when you have television shows like CSI Miami zooming into a portrait

as it is a form of distribution publishing reproduction So when we sign up to a social media website we agree most likely without even reading the ToS to grant the website certain rights This in itself isn t a problem The problem comes with how those rights are applied and what types of rights we grant these companies One very publicized attempt was Facebooks attempt at changing their terms of use service SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FACEBOOK Around February 2009 Facebook attempted to change it s terms of service You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable perpetual non exclusive transferable fully paid worldwide license with the right to sublicense to a use copy publish stream store retain publicly perform or display transmit scan reformat modify edit frame translate excerpt adapt create derivative works and distribute through multiple tiers any User Content you i Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or ii enable a user to Post including by offering a Share Link on your website and b to use your name likeness and image for any purpose including commercial or advertising each of a and b on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof Let s break down what all this means to you as a user You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable perpetual non exclusive transferable fully paid worldwide license with the right to sublicense This section grants Facebook the right to do anything it wants with your content posts images videos that it wants even sell a liscence quote with the right to sublicense to anyone they want This means that they can sell your content to anyone they want and you get NOTHING Your image ends up on major newspapers You don t get a dime quote Fully Paid you don t even get credit as Facebook would be credited for the image Your image ends up on the front cover of Time Magazine too bad for you The above is still the current wording but included is the following You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time If you choose to remove your User Content the license granted above will automatically expire however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content This at least gave you a way to revoke the licence The scandal was with Facebook removing the above paragraph meaning that you could not revoke the licence even if you deleted your account TWITPIC World Entertainment News Network a news and photo agency announced this month that it had become the exclusive photo agency partner of Twitpic The deal allows the agency to sell images posted on Twitpic for publication and to pursue legal action against those who use such images commercially without its permission according to the agency This flat out means that they will use for commercial purpose any pictures they want in any way they want that
