E beta carotene and zinc for age related macular degeneration and vision loss AREDS No 8 Arch Ophthalmol 2001 119 1417 1436 Back to Top Can Lutein Help AMD Patients Improve their Eyesight The LAST Study Richer et al 2004 Scientists have known for a long time that people need adequate levels of certain nutrients in order to maintain healthy eyesight One of these nutrients is called lutein The human body does not naturally produce lutein It must be acquired through the foods we eat such as spinach or other green leafy vegetables or from taking vitamin supplements There is a strong correlation between the amounts of lutein people take in from their diet and the level of lutein found in the macula the light sensing structure located inside the retina Scientists have also known that insufficient levels of lutein which can be determined by measuring macular pigment optical density or MPOD are a major risk factor for AMD So they wanted to learn if increasing lutein intake and therefore MPOD could improve vision in AMD patients The Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial or LAST was designed to find out LAST enrolled 90 AMD patients and randomly assigned them to one of three treatment Groups according to the following daily dosing regimen Group 1 10 mg lutein Group 2 10 mg lutein additional antioxidants and nutrients including vitamin A beta carotene vitamin C vitamin D3 vitamin E vitamin B1 vitamin B2 vitamin B3 vitamin B5 vitamin B6 and zinc Group 3 placebo The study was doubled masked meaning that neither the patients participating in the study nor the staff at the hospital where the study was conducted knew which group individual patients were assigned to At the beginning of the study each patient s vision was tested through a variety of techniques that measured the following MPOD Ability to see at a distance Ability to see close up Contrast sensitivity the ability to see objects that are not clearly outlined or that do not stand out from their background Activities of daily living Night driving Glare recovery the time needed for the eye to regain the ability to distinguish objects after a brief exposure to glare Amsler grid performance a diagnostic tool used to measure a person s central vision field Overall vision change Follow up assessments were then made after 4 8 and 12 months of treatment to see if taking lutein Group 1 lutein plus other antioxidants and nutrients Group 2 or placebo Group 3 had any effect on visual function What the LAST researchers found was that the eyesight of AMD patients in both the lutein group and the lutein plus antioxidants group did in fact improve while the visual function for patients in the placebo group did not Specifically LAST showed that Average MPOD improved by 36 for patients who took lutein and 43 for patients who took lutein antioxidants Patients who took lutein and lutein antioxidants had significant improvement in glare recovery Patients in both groups
