and is now in his seventies and still persevering The disease did not affect his mental capabilities but only his physical body You may wonder why this is in a devotional article but think back to the Book of Job and God s response when Job questioned His authority The following excerpt from the Book of Job Chapter 38 is God s answer to man s understanding of the world Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth Tell me if you have understanding 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know Or who stretched the line upon it 6 On what were its bases sunk or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings a shouted for joy Where is the way to the dwelling of light and where is the place of darkness 20 that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home 21 Surely you know for you were born then and the number of your days is great There is a more than a hint of sarcasm in these words and we do well to heed them when our human pride clouds our understanding of the world or the universe that we inhabit Science is a wonderful discipline and I believe that God uses our scientific knowledge to further reveal His Majesty There is or should not be any conflict between scientific discovery knowledge and Christian faith To quote from world renowned scientist Francis Collins in a PBS interview Actually I don t see that any of the issues that people raise as points of contention between science and faith are all that difficult to resolve Many people get hung up on the whole evolution versus creation argument one of the great tragedies of the last 100 years is the way in which this has been polarized On the one hand we have scientists who basically adopt evolution as their faith and think there s no need for God to explain why life exists On the other hand we have people who are believers who are so completely sold on the literal interpretation of the first book of the Bible that they are rejecting very compelling scientific data about the age of the earth and the relatedness of living beings It s unnecessary I think God gave us an opportunity through the use of science to understand the natural world The idea that some are asking people to disbelieve our scientific data in order to prove that they believe in God is so unnecessary This last sentence from Collins may provoke some thought God knows our very thoughts and therefore we really don t need to prove anything to Him Scientific data has changed our understanding of the cosmos over the past few hundred years and the reality is that the data keeps changing even slightly Does that mean that the old data was wrong and

overall health than their counterparts who had no religious affiliation or exposure to religion The sense of community was also very strong The study also talked about brain mapping using tools such as functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI which showed areas of the brain that were greatly enhanced or thickened in people who had a significant religious component in their lives There was also a reference to a major study of brain scans of Franciscan nuns in prayer and Buddhist monks in meditation This study showed the same enhanced areas of brain function The author conceded that neuro science had not actually proven that enhanced areas of brain function was a desirable change in the brain but this was generally accepted as a positive trait The author also made reference to the survey by Reginald Bibby on Religion and Spirituality which showed a growing number of Canadians consider their spiritual lives important even as the group identified as religious has declined substantially As I continued to read further it seemed to me that what was being suggested was that spirituality rather than religion was the key element that was being promoted Any belief system that draws on our spiritual nature is better than none at all and is of benefit to the human condition Hold on a moment any belief system This is the point where it occurred to me that the writer didn t really understand Christianity as a relationship rather than a religion However this was a science paper so perhaps this is understandable Perhaps too the history of the Christian Church has been more focussed on religiosity rather than relationship and may be seen by those outside the Church as the failure of the religion The various cults that have risen over the years have a belief system also but have often caused great harm to people who are searching for meaning in their lives I wonder what the brain scans would show in these devotees Jesus warned that there are other spirits in this world and we need to test that those sprits are from God When Jesus cast out the demons from the possessed man Mark Chapter 5 these spirits were definitely not from God but they recognized who Jesus was God is revealed to us through the scientific process but there can be pitfalls when we rely only on the science itself We have been created by God as spiritual beings in an earthly body and we have a soul which in some sense connects us to God and helps us focus on God A firm relationship with God is what God intended for humanity and we are fortunate that this is preached at Glenbrook on a regular basis How we care for our soul is critical to understanding the person that we are Our soul is the source of all our desires and when that is focused on God we can truly say or sing It is well with my soul submitted by

  • T.E.A.M. – Together we Accomplish Much | Glenbrook Presbyterian Church
we can paraphrase these famous words and ask not what the Church can do for you ask what you can do for your Church In the weeks and months ahead of us we need to remember that we have all been given gifts by God to be used in our discipleship and in the building of His Church Nobody is too old or too young to become involved With the recent Pan Am Games held in Toronto and surroundings there has been a lot of emphasis on the team spirit that is evidenced by many of those who won medals The acronym T E A M should be remembered as Together Everyone Accomplishes Much Individually it is hard to accomplish much but collectively and with God s guidance and help we can accomplish much more As a congregation having completed much by any standard over the past forty some years we will no doubt face new challenges in the years ahead Are you prepared to shoulder some of the load that has been carried by several members of the congregation for many years Become involved lend a hand when able If you aren t sure ask Pastor Ian or any of the elders By becoming involved you can help shape the future of our Church family Choose to become one of the pioneers of tomorrow for again quoting Kennedy if we rest on our achievements we resist the pace of progress Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past are certain to miss the future However we must always put our trust in God as He leads us to become all that we can be and quoting from Isaiah 40 31 those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength They will soar

  • The Book Review | Glenbrook Presbyterian Church
account of the greatest love story ever told is woven in its many pages In the first chapters of the book the author introduces us to a married couple who seek to find their own path through life The couple make some terrible mistakes and become bankrupt both spiritually and financially As a result their landlord throws them out of their beautiful garden home Separated from those they love life is full of hardships but that is not the end of the story Several authors follow the lives of the couples descendants Some were exemplary citizens while others were warriors cheaters wanderers and desert dwellers No matter what their station in life all were looking for peace and reconciliation Peace is finally made when the son of the highest king gives his own life in payment for all the wrongdoings of his father s subjects He took their place in order to show how deep how wide how high his father s love is for all of the people in his kingdom the whole earth The book The holy Bible Who was the son Jesus the Son of God There is so much more that I could say about this book Its pages have provided comfort guidance and wisdom for me during my life s journey and I would suggest that we all take a few minutes to read from its pages each day Prayer Dear God so often we try to find our own way through the day So often we are faced with despair We forget just how much You love and care for us Remind us to read Your Word each day for it is here that we will find words that tell us that no matter what comes our way no matter what we face Your

  • The Holy Spirit: Cinderella of the Trinity? | Glenbrook Presbyterian Church
of Christian doctrines Very few seem to be interested in it This analogy struck a chord with me In speaking with my Christian friends these days I hear a lot about the second coming of Christ Many feel the time is near and they look for signs of his imminent arrival Indeed in reflecting on Christ s life and work on earth and on his atoning sacrifice on the cross it is easy to overlook the third person of the trinity the Holy Spirit We risk sidelining the Holy Spirit and forgetting his daily presence in our lives We are wise to remember that just as God gave his only Son for us that same Son gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit In fact that same Holy Spirit helped Jesus during his earthly ministry Consider these words taken from Isaiah A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse From his roots a Branch will bear fruit The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him The Spirit of wisdom and of understanding the Spirit of counsel and power The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord And he will delight in the fear of the Lord Isaiah 11 1 3 NIV This passage refers to Christ s reliance on the Holy Spirit and if Christ who is holy and blameless depends so heavily on the Holy Spirit how much more do we need him Far too often I have sidelined the Holy Spirit in my adoration of Christ I have resolved to pay more attention to the Holy Spirit in my life No one knows when Christ is returning and in the meantime we have work to do to bring heaven to Earth to bring hope to the captives and much more Thank

to pay The merchant gave a great banquet for the King When all the guests were seated and before the food was brought in the merchant had a large platter placed on the table and a fire lighted on it Then taking the note out of his pocket he held it in the flames until it was burned to ashes The king threw his arms around his benefactor and wept Just so we have been mortgaged to God The debt was due but we were unable to pay Two thousand years ago God invited the world to the Gospel feast and in the agonies of the cross God held your sins and mine until every last vestige of our guilt was consumed Prayer for the day In gratitude I kneel before You Lord Jesus Christ Devotion from Billy Graham Evangelastic Association from more devotions see http billygraham org devotions Share this entry Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google Share by Mail Glenbrook supports The Open Door Evangel Hall Presbyterians Aiding Nicaraugans Upcoming Events Latest News FUN Bingo Remember that the FUN BINGO is next Saturday Read More Pancake Supper Tuesday February 9th Quickly approaching is our pancake

  • Well, That’s Just Perfect | Glenbrook Presbyterian Church
just perfect Now I can get more exercise by walking farther Such an approach can help us stop whining about trivialities Some situations are far from perfect however Sometimes maintaining a positive mental attitude is not only difficult it isn t even sane In a sense the entire Bible is devoted to the fact that everything is not perfect Whole sections of Scripture tell of unspeakable deeds Murder rape cannibalism treachery genocide Earth s intolerable experiences are well documented Bookending all that mayhem is a long ago and faraway garden where the first man and woman lived in perfection as well as a promise that the Creator of that garden goodness will return to make everything new Genesis 2 1 25 Revelation 21 5 And in the middle woven into the flawed fabric of life is a unifying thread that gives us reason for real joy Christ existed before anything was created writes Paul He holds all creation together Colossians 1 15 17 He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ s blood on the cross Colossians 1 20 When we trust Jesus we trust the One who put all of this in motion He came to walk among us and offer the perfect sacrifice for the damage we have inflicted on His creation And He s restoring everything to its proper order One day we ll say without a hint of irony This is just perfect NLT 365 day reading plan passage for today Genesis 45 1 28 More For the perfect beginning re read Genesis 2 1 25 For the perfect ending read Revelation 22 1 21 Next What s your most pressing issue right now How can you trust God with it Submitted by Tim Gustufson Our Daily Bread Share this

  • Winemaker | Glenbrook Presbyterian Church
a miracle had taken place Everyone else was oblivious to what had occurred all the other guests had no earthly idea about the heavenly event that had just taken place In church we sometimes experience something similar Miracles of healing answered prayers and gifts of blessing frequently occur in our congregations no matter how big or small People of Christian faith from many different backgrounds have actually known of individual miraculous moments in their lives Sadly the rest of the world appears to miss out on these special events because folks are too busy too distracted too distant or too unconnected to God to be able to realize or even recognize that miracles are taking place in churches all around the globe Each time I come across and re read the story of the wedding in Cana Jesus continues to make me smile because I know that He is still in the miracle business taking empty lives and filling them with His beautiful Spirit He makes the best out of the worst He turns critical moments into miraculous events He changes sinners into servants as well as making dedicated disciples out of the most desperate and disastrous of people In other words He still turns ordinary water into the choicest wine Questions for personal reflection How has Christ wrought changes in me Where have I seen His miraculous works in my church and community Prayer Lord Jesus thank You for the miraculous changes that You constantly make throughout the world Thank You for turning our lives around by allowing us the opportunity to become Your servants Be with us and help us to carry on Your great work of changing the world In Your holy name we pray Amen submitted by John Stuart traqair aol com Knoxville Tennessee USA www
