  • God helps those who help themselves? | Glenbrook Presbyterian Church
their hands or Israel would boast against me My own strength has saved me Judges 7 So Gideon allowed those who were afraid to go home Twenty two thousand left and ten thousand remained but that was still too many So they led the army to drinking water and only chose those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink I ve also heard many theories on why those who lap like dogs are more superior than the kneelers and those sermons also make me smile God chooses whom He chooses for no other reason except His own inscrutable ones In the end Gideon led three hundred men against an enemy the Bible describes as The Midians the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples who had settled in the valley thick as locusts Gideon won the day of course with the Lord s help Over and over again the Bible emphasizes that battles are won with the Lord s presence and might or they are not won at all Even a great military leader like Joshua and a superior force was defeated when he went against little Ai without consulting the Lord first The only biblical incidents I recall where bold persistent action changes the course of events is when people pray Jesus tells a parable of a persistent widow petitioning an unjust Judge Eventually the beleaguered Judge says I care nothing what God thinks even less what people think But because this widow won t quit badgering me I d better do something and see that she gets justice otherwise I m going to end up beaten black and blue by her pounding Luke 18 The Message Perhaps we should say God helps those who keep praying Submitted
