there the machines they operate and the economy which acts as the brain dictating the movements of the other two entities Definitely a monster of the new millenium 9 41 AM Dustin said Yeah cool post for sure I d also like to point out that corporations are by nessecity free of any moral action that would impede profits Say there is a person in a corporation who refuses to go through with some sort of action they believe to be destructive or immoral on the corporation s behalf This person is treated like a faulty organ in a body that is replaced with one that will work properly comply 3 13 AM Allison Muri said Like the long tradition of the body politic analogy of government to body there s also a long tradition of the factory as a machine and workers as mechanical parts in the machine Often in dystopian literature the factory corporation society itself is depicted as a monster both monolithic and evil The multinational is another version of the monstrous body Corporation as corpus There is also a tendency in the Industrial Age to depict the body itself as an industrial factory or office system see the National Library of Medicine s Dream Anatomy Dreaming the Industrial Body You might want to read Hobbes Leviathan which depicts the government legal system and commercial interactions as an enormous mechanistic body In terms of the history of labour Adam Smith s Wealth of Nations 1776 describes the ideal system to increase production through the division of labour in a pin factory each man does one job repetitively thereby improving production but also rendering the creative human into a mere mechanism One man draws out the wire another straights it a fourth points it a fifth grinds it at the top for receiving the head to make the head requires two or three distinct operations to put it on is a particular business to whiten the pins is another it is even a trade by itself to put them in the paper and the important business of making a pin is in this manner divided into about eighteen distinct operations In The Theory of Moral Sentiments 1759 he writes of society as an industrial machine whose parts are like interacting mechanisms The perfection of police the extension of trade and manufactures are noble and magnificent objects The contemplation of them pleases us and we are interested in whatever can tend to advance them They make part of the great system of government and the wheels of the political machine seem to move with more harmony and ease by means of them We take pleasure in beholding the perfection of so beautiful and grand a system and we are uneasy till we remove any obstruction that can in the least disturb or encumber the regularity of its motions There s lots we can talk about in terms of the technological society and corporation as monstrous entities The Matrix does

inarticulate and implacable sadly he never gets to read Plutarch or Milton Jovovich s character Alice is a hottie but she too is a force of violence and destruction We can t always tell the monsters by how they look I don t think there was any deep intent to explore ideas of monstrosity here but I will continue to think about this movie in terms of the culture that created and consumes it The connection of corporate power and capitalism unfettered by morality is worth exploring There is also a sweet scene near the end a montage of media clips that begins with the Umbrella Corporation implicated in the detonation of a nuclear device that annihilated a city and ends with the same corporation being praised by authorities for their quick thinking and assistance 7 44 PM Allison Muri said Very interesting stuff I d love to see this From the little I see in the preview it would seem the film is very much concerned with rendering a vision of the monstrous potential of playing God It s remarkable how film companies are capitalizing on fear Making a change to cellular DNA won t inevitably turn us into monsters but it s terror that people seem to relish 8 52 PM Anonymous said I really don t think this movie is capiltalizing on people s fear of genetic manipulation It s just a backstory that allows zombies to exist and makes much more sense than that occult nonsense seen in other zombie movies However I agree with Meshon that the movie centralizes on corporate power Besides I didn t find the movie that scary it was just really damn cool 5 44 PM Post a Comment Home Headlesschicken Allison Muri University of Saskatchewan Previous Posts Sousveillance Blog Free

the paranoia but you re raising some points I ve never really considered specifically is this new The change I see is one of scale but perhaps it isn t that either I was going to talk about how a serf would likely have been aware of events in his or her village and learned how to deal with and think about those events from the church For things that happened outside one s immediate surroundings you had a feudal lord who would sort out the politics Now our awareness extends to a global village and mass media generally does the interpreting And then I realized that even the scale hasn t changed Things that happen far away are still generally outside the average person s sphere of awareness and from what I can see and tell from personal experience most people are content to let the people that deal with that stuff do their thing Who are those people Well you know the government and them Ummm the powers that be They know what they re doing they ll take care of me 6 50 PM Meshon said The idea of scale is still bugging me Maybe there isn t a general desire to be globally aware but I think that there is an illusion of awareness being provided by mass communications media It s apparently very easy to believe that I am informed about the world when I see it in moving colour pictures and the ostensibly neutral reporter is telling me what those pictures mean what to think about them and how to fit them into my world view The part of this that worries me is that a very few people can pretty much decide what millions will think That s why most people still call it a democracy And terror alerts climbed to the highest in the past two weeks today as Senator Kerry flip flops on defense Steve Well Mike it could be worse we could be living in Venezuela At least we live in a free and democratic nation That s right Steve Goodnight America and thanks for watching Fox News real and balanced And 10 million television viewers whisper back at the screen Free and democratic real and balanced A terrorocracy Sure Rule by those who can instill terror It s just being done in an oblique way We aren t afraid of the politicians we re afraid of the people they tell us to be afraid of I have a friend in the States who grimly watches the effects of the terror alerts and threat warnings as they swing wildly across the hotter side of the spectrum It s crazy down there Note I point my comments at the US because it s easy I m still convinced Paul Martin is taking advantage of the fact that my attention is focused elsewhere 7 17 PM Warren said I agree with Allison that there have always been a diversity in what kind

  • cyborgblog: More ASIMO Questions
no longer punished directly for their crimes for example a sexual offender would be punished by the removal of his or her sex organs Now the prison exists merely as an institution of remolding where people are shaped to fit back into what society has defined as the acceptable citizen Foucault goes on to explain that other human made institutions such as the hospital school economy and religion also represent this same power relationship For example the Canadian beef crisis the economy is suffering so people are expected to respond to this by eating and supporting Canadian beef The economy calls so the people answer Also the school is primarily a power knowledge relationship between teacher and student where the teacher supplies information in which the students are expected to regurgitate back come final time Similar to the prison students are monitored teacher standing at front of class tests evaluation etc to ensure the molding process is successful So to get back to the Metropolis the brain of the city Joh Fredersen who was explained to have conceived the idea to build the machine represents the guard that stands in the panopticon monitoring and ensuring the internalization of good behavior among prisoners He is the leader on the city or the leader of the institution prison The workers represent the prisoners Therefore clearly the machine has made the workers themselves machinelike because the people have become an effect of the city So maybe there is not supposed to be a distinction between evil as machine and evil as woman Instead maybe the fact that the worker s are an effect of something not human is thought to be evil The head and hands need a mediator the heart something that exclusively represents that which is living or natural maybe So if the heart represents humanity or humans as being truly human as opposed to being effects Metropolis may be proposing that human beings must somehow eliminate the evil without eliminating the machine because the complete elimination of the machine would throw off the balance of existence This balance of existence seems to rely on the balance of nature and machine assuming that humans the workers are natural So I guess if you know where I am going with this jump in at any time please much of this theory relies on the dichotomy of human and nature Are humans natural Or are we just a virus competing with that which is actually natural 9 39 PM Warren said I tried to post this lastnight but it didn t work so I will retry and hopefully it doesn t pop up twice It seems as though the Metropolis represents a Foucauldian view of the society we presently live in The worker s livelihood is directly tied to the livelihood of that which enslaves them the machine The city is a monstrous representation of the human made institution assuming that because the machine relies on human participation it also must have been initially created by humans In Discipline Punish The Birth of the Prison Michel Foucault explains that humans have become nothing more than effects of the institutions they create Foucault demonstrates this through a historical investigation into what discipline and punishment meant during the birth of the prison and showing how these meanings have changed over time Instead of a brisk flogging or branding people are no longer punished directly for their crimes for example a sexual offender would be punished by the removal of his or her sex organs Now the prison exists merely as an institution of remolding where people are shaped to fit back into what society has defined as the acceptable citizen Foucault goes on to explain that other human made institutions such as the hospital school economy and religion also represent this same power relationship For example the Canadian beef crisis the economy is suffering so people are expected to respond to this by eating and supporting Canadian beef The economy calls so the people answer Also the school is primarily a power knowledge relationship between teacher and student where the teacher supplies information in which the students are expected to regurgitate back come final time Similar to the prison students are monitored teacher standing at front of class tests evaluation etc to ensure the molding process is successful What I am trying to get at is summed up nicely in a quote addressed to Frankenstein from his monstrous creation Slave I before reasoned with you but you have proved yourself unworthy of my condescension Remember that I have power you believe yourself miserable but I can make you so wretched that the light of day will be hateful to you You are my creator but I am your master obey p 192 So to get back to Metropolis the brain of the city Joh Fredersen who was explained to have conceived the idea to build the machine represents the guard that stands in the panopticon monitoring and ensuring the internalization of good behavior among prisoners He is the leader on the city or the leader of the institution prison The workers represent the prisoners Therefore clearly the machine has made the workers themselves machinelike because the people have become an effect of the city So maybe there is not supposed to be a distinction between evil as machine and evil as woman Instead maybe the fact that the worker s are an effect of something not human both the city and Hel the android is thought to be evil The head and hands need a mediator the heart something that exclusively represents that which is living or natural maybe So if the heart represents humanity or humans as being truly human as opposed to being effects Metropolis may be proposing that human beings must somehow eliminate the evil created by the machine without eliminating the machine itself because the complete elimination of the machine throws off the balance of human survival This balance of survival
