  • Construction confident for 2013 – with some caution - ICBA - Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of British Columbia
get the skills you need on your crews and keep those crews together Despite these positive economic signs there are clouds on the horizon On the municipal front our industry faces ever increasing fees taxes and regulations that drive the price of construction up something ICBA has highlighted in the past and will highlight in the future But the biggest cloud is the May 2013 provincial election The way the polls sit the NDP under Adrian Dix is poised for victory That would equal a return to some of the disastrous policies of the 1990s best summed up as tilting the workplace towards unionization There s already talk of bringing back mandatory trades for construction which are government regulation telling contractors how to staff their jobs It sets the number of apprentices the contractor is permitted to employ and then limits what each worker is allowed to do Those limits are based on the craft system that has been discredited by the marketplace The end result is an inefficient worksite that will cost contractors and our clients more to have the projects completed These sorts of policies coupled with promised spending increases and likely tax increases will erase the confidence we have by scaring away investment B C s construction industry is poised for its busiest and best year in decades But only if we can avoid a return to the kind of economic and labour polices we had in the 1990s that choked off investment and slowed the work available to a crawl Post navigation Ideas and issues in B C Construction Sun article shows public pay much richer than private Leave a Reply Cancel reply You must be logged in to post a comment Menu ICBA Independent News Media Publications Links Search for Recent Posts 3 Myths About

  • NDP will hurt construction - ICBA - Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of British Columbia
be replaced by a system based on signed cards a shady system open to abuse and intimidation Unions will also get a helping hand from changes to the skills training system The NDP and the old style craft unions have consistently attacked the 40 per cent completion rate in trades training They keep calling this a failure despite the fact that graduation rates have consistently been around 40 per cent since the 1990s I am expecting a return to the past in the system done under the guise of fixing it by imposing apprenticeship quotas that limit the number of trainees a company can have based on the number of certified workers they have It is the classic guild model of unions the more you can limit supply the more you can increase the prices Construction companies and in fact most employers can expect beefed up enforcement around these quotas A new army of government workers will be tasked with building a brave new world of paperwork nightmares and staffing disruptions for companies The icing on the cake for all of this is the investment chill that will fall over British Columbia The NDP has opposed every major project being put forward recently natural gas development in the north pipeline construction a new oil refinery on the north coast Rejecting these projects before any formal plans come forward sends a chilling message to potential investors Invest somewhere else And that builds a chilling future for the construction companies who build these projects and help to build the entire economy in this province Post navigation Some Delays for BC Safety Authority Online Permits NDP s giant gift to their biggest donors Leave a Reply Cancel reply You must be logged in to post a comment Menu ICBA Independent News Media Publications
