    Our People Media Issues Centre CRTC to provide anti spam clarification for charities Friday July 4 Monday June 30 2014 Issue Alerts While Canada s Anti Spam Law takes effect tomorrow July 1 Imagine Canada has been in contact with both Industry Canada and the CRTC to ensure that charities receive clear and consistent information with regard to how the legislation and regulations apply to our sector In a teleconference today the CRTC confirmed that it will issue guidance to charities in a FAQ document on Friday July 4 In the interim a number of organizations have contacted either Imagine Canada or the CRTC seeking clarifications The CRTC has indicated that it is reasonable for charities to await the publication of its FAQ document before determining what additional compliance efforts if any beyond the exemption granted and the efforts charities have made to date will be required The CRTC has also asked that charities wait until the week of July 7 before contacting the Commission with additional questions Charities that have suggestions for additional FAQ s for the CRTC to consider are invited to share them with Imagine Canada at publicpolicy imaginecanada ca We will continue to keep you updated

  • Canada’s Anti-Spam Law (CASL): Imagine Canada seeks clarification from CRTC about anti-spam and charities | Imagine Canada
    Imagine Canada on guidance material that will be released in early July We will let you know as soon as this is made public We would also encourage you to read our other recent communications on this issue The CRTC which is responsible for enforcing CASL yesterday contacted Imagine Canada to let us know that there are inconsistencies between their interpretation of the exemption for commercial electronic messages sent by registered charities the primary purpose of which is raising funds and that of Industry Canada which we shared in our Issue Alert of June 5 The CRTC has yet to issue official guidance on the exemption as it applies to charities and has indicated that an FAQ document pertaining to registered charities will be issued in the coming weeks As such the full extent of the discrepancies between the interpretation provided by Industry Canada the authors of the legislation and regulations and the CRTC may only become clear after the legislation takes effect We have written to the CRTC asking to meet with them immediately to obtain clarification and guidance to assist charities We understand that it is very challenging for charities to ensure their compliance with the legislation and
