  • Chief Economist for Canada’s Charitable and Nonprofit Sector | Imagine Canada
    bringing its economic issues forward to public policy decision makers The sector is important in terms of its contribution to economic activity and jobs In Canada more than 170 000 organizations work in areas ranging from healthcare to sports the arts social services education international development and the environment The charitable and nonprofit sector represents 8 1 of Canada s GDP and 10 5 of the labour force About Brian Emmett In February 2013 Brian Emmett joined Imagine Canada in the unique role of the Chief Economist for Canada s Charitable and Nonprofit Sector Mr Emmett is an economics graduate of the University of Western Ontario and the University of Essex in England and has enjoyed a long and distinguished public service career He was Canada s first Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development in the late 1990s and worked extensively on Canada s Green Plan He also served as Vice President of the Canadian International Development Agency CIDA in the early 2000s and has been an Assistant Deputy Minister in a number of federal government departments The office of the Chief Economist for Canada s Charitable and Nonprofit Sector is made possible through funding received by The Muttart

    Standards Program in the coming years The Standards Program offers a Canada wide set of foundational standards for charities and nonprofits wishing to enhance their effectiveness in the five fundamental areas of board governance financial accountability and transparency fundraising staff management and volunteer involvement It includes a voluntary accreditation program for organizations wishing to publicly demonstrate they have successfully met the standards through a peer review process 1 How will this affect my organization s participation in the Ethical Code Program At the current time the Ethical Code Program continues to operate and all participants are supported as usual Organizations that wish to maintain their participation in the Ethical Code Program during this transition period are required to renew participation and or submit annual compliance reports as usual 2 When can my organization join the Standards Program The Standards Program opened to all charities and nonprofits in May 2012 Visit the Standards Program for more details on how to achieve accreditation Where applicable fees paid for the Ethical Code Program can be applied to the Standards Program This will be determined on a case by case basis please contact Imagine Canada for more information We will work with all Ethical
