  • Everyday Heroes | Jeanette Arsenault - Singer & Songwriter, Ontario, Canada
    lighting up whenever we would say his name or pay any attention to him I remember taking him for walks in his wheelchair around the neighbourhood and it was all so natural and normal for us The only time I started to think there was something wrong was by the reaction of some people And the awful names they would call him I would get so upset and try my hardest to defend him but I was just a child so it hurt to hear them say those things I wanted so much for them to understand what a warm wonderful gentle soul he was and how his smile made you feel like a million dollars But they weren t interested in learning anything they would just make their slurs and turn away I remember a high school class on sociology and proudly standing up to share my brother s story and how wonderful he is Then a student said he should be euthanized because he contributes nothing to society I was devastated that someone could think that actually I was shocked that anyone could think that way about another human being who is totally dependant on others for their care well being But rather than feeling defeated by these negative people it only served to strengthen my resolve to be a voice for those who don t have one I was driven to educate enlighten those who just don t get it to advocate and be a voice for the vulnerable I think the real heroes are the workers the caregivers who work day in day out for our vulnerable people in society Many people have contributed to Ron s well being and most recently March of Dimes who have partnered with me on my VIA Rail journey are
