to Paris and we get to witness the landing thanks to the Tail Cam on the outside of the aircraft We arrive in Paris 1 5 hours late which means we definitely missed our connecting flight Fran gets in line at an Air France line up at the arrivals gate I head off to get our luggage However I am told at the security check before the baggage carousel that if I go through I can t come back in So I head back to meet Fran who is still in a long long line up We were there at least 45 minutes We finally get to a ticket agent who informs us that we have to go to the Finnair desk We find one He tells us we have to go to another one The 2 nd one tells us we have to go to a third one and the third one tells us to go back to the first one Then this nice young man takes us on as a personal case and does everything he can to get us on a flight which was leaving in 15 minutes Long story short he can t do it and tells us we have to go to Air France to book our flight for 3 25 We look at him incredulously so much so that he personally calls Air France to let them know our story We arrive at yet another Air France desk and meet Mr just call me honey and his co worker Cendrine He made us laugh most probably because of how distraught we were by that point He books us on the 3 25 flight gives us free food vouchers and tells us to be back to see him by 1 25 to get our boarding pass because it was too early to issue it We go to 2 different restaurants which would not take the vouchers and find a 3 rd one which was so busy we couldn t get in eat be back in time to meet Mr Honey by 1 25 So we head back to the desk wait till 1 25 His coworker Cendrine then walks over with us to the Finnair desk and the TWO of them work together to get us our boarding passes TA DAH finally Success Now we just had another 2 hour wait to fly out of Paris finally So we head over to the one restaurant that takes Air France vouchers and wait in a long long line up Finally get seated and it takes FOREVER to get served SO MUCH SO that we end up having to leave halfway through eating our meal because there was NO WAY we were going to be late for our flight out of Paris Our nice young friend at Finnair GUARANTEES us that our luggage WILL be on the flight and be ready to be picked up in Helsinki 2 hours flying time and we land in Helsinki We

  • Networking in Songwriting | Jeanette Arsenault - Singer & Songwriter, Ontario, Canada
appointments just from standing in line at this post office location If you are in another music city find out where many of the music people pick up their mail and have your mail sent to that post office This is just one idea The point is you need to find creative ways to meet people and build relationships with people in the music business Be a resource in your community Why not start your own weekly newsletter in your songwriting community Start with your friends ask them to e mail their gig schedule to you and compile a weekly gig calendar Grow your list and build a data base and you will be the person everyone in the community wants to get to know because you are a resource to them They will tell the other people in your music community that you are the person to know and voila you re on the road to serious networking I know this from experience Check out www nashvillemuse com for a list of songwriting and industry events You can also get our weekly e zine publication called The Nashville Muse which is sent to thousands of songwriters and industry pros around the country Go out and find your local music community Attend songwriting workshops e g www nashvillesongwriters com or start your own workshop just by having monthly meetings with the people that play and write songs where you live Create an event On the third Sunday of every month I host the 3rd Sunday at 3 in my Nashville home It s an open invitation to songwriters and artists to bring food and beverages to share network and play their original songs in four rooms in and outside the house I found a local restaurant Bojangles Chicken to provide food but I encourage everyone to bring food to share This builds a community by introducing songwriters and upcoming artists and sometimes hit songwriters and a well known artist or two have stopped by for the day Hosting an event like this helps get your name out in the community not to mention the service you are providing The 3rd Sunday started as a dinner party when I wanted to share a Sunday dinner with my songwriting family and invited a bunch of friends and that immediately ignited the monthly event I promote the event through The Nashville Muse and also on MySpace sites What not to do at networking events Do not start a conversation by telling someone everything about you in the first 20 seconds I was at an event a couple weeks ago and introduced an artist songwriter to a music industry pro and the artist started off by saying how she knows so and so and she had won this contest and that contest and started telling them about a song that she wrote and everyone just loves the song she got a record deal with a new label and it went south and started handing

  • Marketing Music | Jeanette Arsenault - Singer & Songwriter, Ontario, Canada
Weapon with music donated by himself and many other well known comedy artists The money from one went to the Twin Towers orphans fund and the other went to the Red Cross for Katrina victims 3 The Agent Strategy Most bands start out promoting and representing themselves because they start out small But it s human nature to think more of someone when they have someone acting on their behalf In fact it s been shown to be true in various psychological and sociological studies Even if you re just starting out find someone to represent you and you ll have more successes Having an agent is even more useful during negotiations because they can be as tough as they want to If you negotiate for yourself and you give the other side a particularly hard time they might start to dislike you rather than your agent 4 The Multi Tasking Strategy The musicians that have the most success don t just rely on one project for their income Most of them work on many things beyond playing live selling albums and selling merchandise For instance Jonathan Coulton participates in the Popular Science magazine podcast at popsci com and licenses his music Brad Turcotte of Brad Sucks maintains multiple Web sites including stripcreator com and also licenses his music Grant Baciocco of Throwing Toasters writes and produces the multiple award winning podcast The Radio Adventures of Dr Floyd does voice over and acting work and produces a podcast for the Jim Henson Company among other projects George Hrab is a drummer in a popular cover band that plays at weddings and corporate events writes and produces his Geologic Podcast and has written a book The members of Beatnik Turtle have day jobs run IndieGuide com and write books like The Indie Band Survival Guide and articles like this one Not only do musicians like these have a lot of projects going on they use the projects to promote the others 5 The Long Haul Strategy While major labels had to focus on making one hit wonders because of their business model that was never the best situation for the musician Furthermore it s not even similar to the way that most businesses work build their name over the long term and eventually get consistent income over time A band or artist can be just like any other business that starts out small and eventually becomes solidly established For example in 2001 Brad Turcotte released his first album online as a downloadable set of MP3s The money he made from this allowed him to do a run of CDs which got him another surge of new fans Later he released the source tracks to his music this time making new fans among people who enjoy remixing songs After he packaged the best remixes into another CD he got a new surge of fans who loved both the remixes and the original material By the time he released his second album it
