time I would simply play corner to corner which in fact was more than 120 but if took away any trepidation I may have had over not being able to play longer or in your case heavier greens What it would also do is prepare your leg muscles for the inevitable extra stretching they are going to get at 8 9 seconds Strategy It s basically just heave and hope but the best policy is usually to at least play to the head or beyond When the jack is struck by most draw weights it will not move far Even some driven jacks do not stand a chance of existing the rink You know however that back bowls will always come into play on heavy greens so it s probably best to get those in early and bash around in the head with the rest of the bowlers later As you can probably tell there will not be a lot of finesse involved at 8 9 seconds I could suggest playing a bit on your front lawn which will do 2 things One it will boost your confidence as when you start play on the shaggy greens they will seem not as bad as you were expecting and two it may attract some of your neighbours to the game of bowls My goal is to play only 12 15 seconds greens I am disappointed when I get to a green having been told they are very fast only to find they are still in the 10 range Even then I find a tension in my quads building throughout the day Let s hope that one day we can help our smaller clubs and those with town lawnkeepers prepare their greens for playing Bowls as it was meant to be played The administrator has disabled public write access Drills to prepare for slow greens 2 years 5 months ago 495 debedeen User OFFLINE First Timer Posts 24 Karma 1 All of the above is great prep work for slow greens I often take a quick jog around the green and do a stretch warm up before games especially when I know it s going to be on a slow green Far too often I come off the green with sore legs sore back and feeling tired despite having done some good prep work I have sometimes done a drill at my home club where I play a consistent yard through shot something 2 3 feet past a given target On slow greens I often start a game by playing the same idea putting my intended target 2 3 feet beyond the jack or bowl I often find i m short to start with consistently short and by putting my target beyond the jack and ignoring the jack distance I can then come up short and still be within 2 feet of the jack As I get comfortable with the weight and grass I can then adjust my target to get closer

  • MVP Sports - Club MVP - Topic: To Breath or Not to Breath... ?? (1/1)
we need to improve and develop strategies for and indeed I am a strong believer in Neideffer s Board Awareness Narrow Focus grid more on that later but I also believe that mental skills are directly related to breathing skills having said all that I can guarantee that as a coach when I ask an athlete to take a deep breath they will do it wrong more than 50 of the time until I show them the correct way that is I have a video series for coaches and athletes coming out soon I think this will make a very good brief but valuable addition to the series The administrator has disabled public write access To Breath or Not to Breath 2 years 9 months ago 359 strobeonline User OFFLINE First Timer Posts 1 Thank you received 1 Karma 0 I thought I would offer my input on this as it is central to the coaching I do on the West Coast The following is an excerpt from my 4 Steps to Success in Lawn Bowls coaching book Deep Diaphragmatic Abdominal Breathing Deep breathing is a physical technique of relaxation which is the fundamental start of many relaxation exercises In this book I intend only to demonstrate its use during a Lawn Bowls situation where it can be used to prevent physical and mental tension from affecting sound decision making and delivery technique As such this exercise is conducted in a standing position rather than its normal position of lying down Stand upright with your feet slightly apart your eyes closed and hands down by your sides Your mouth should be closed but not clenched Slowly begin to inhale through the nose inflating the lower abdomen and diaphragm first then expanding the rib area and finally filling the upper chest Check your inhalation making sure that the breath intake is silent Refine your breath so that it enters the nostrils as if it were thread like not a gush of wind As you inhale visualize that this air is a gentle white mist entering your body Hold your breath for as long as is comfortably possible Your body will feel as if your feet are sinking into the floor and you will feel lighter as the experience continues When you feel it is time to begin breathing out open your mouth just a little and slowly raise and lower your shoulders Visualize the breath you are exhaling as a white mist Let it slowly envelope you like a cloud of vapour The cloud will begin at your feet as you continue to exhale slowly and silently and then work up until it has surrounded your entire body Pause for several seconds before continuing to breathe deeply slowly and normally Repeat this procedure enough times and you will start to experience a calm mental feeling This simple breathing technique should also be incorporated and synchronized with your actions for delivering every bowl both in practice and in compettion Breathing out during

taking the right approach and applying the things you are learning for coaching And thanks for posting here I think it will benefit other coaches as well Hcomba wrote Well the novice districts are over This was my first experience as a team coach I thought coaching novices would be the easiest teams to train and a good place to starts Surprise They have so much to learn and it needs to be broken down into small chunks so they are not overloaded Much more difficult a task that I first imagined whole part whole WPW is still a good way of presenting things I often use analogies from other sports I play regularly to make a point Golf and Curling are good examples golf especially for the WPW method videos I have coming up should help as well I am sending you this email because you are the best I know and I did like the experience and want to be a better coach so I need to learn too so I am looking for advice from you guys everyone learns from everyone else no matter how experienced they are that s the beauty of learning I played David Bryant the Jack Nicklaus or Wayne Gretsky of the bowls world and even then and after numerous World and Commonwealth Gold medals he was still trying to learn something new so if he can do it so can we We had practice night every Tuesday and it was structured and planned ahead Even when I was away bowling I sent emails and had them send me their feedback after the practice We did warm ups drills and fun time Every practice was different They commented my last practice was the best as we worked on strategy shot choices etc They were wrong My best practices were on technique and consistency do it right and do it again what sort of input did you get from your athletes prior to a the season b your practices every practice must be purposeful and to make it so it requires knowing the needs of your athletes and no doubt they thought your best session was the strategy one as that is often the one they will see as being most relevant and applicable to their games I strongly believe that practice has to be measurable to be useful in any way else it is just a roll up I have lots of tips and tools available that I will be posting in the Resources section of our website throughout the next few months Our winning record was poor but the winners knew they had to play hard to beat our teams Several nail bitters Had 2 ladies and 2 men s teams and in all 7 games only lost 2 five enders records especially with novices are irrelevant and if they knew why they lost the 5 enders then you have progress just knowing they lost them is not enough no matter what

am Been a Leaf fan since the days I used to put together my own Crystal radio and listen to Foster Hewitt til I couldn t keep my eyes open any more Through thick and thin I ve followed my Leafs which is what I believe a true fan is all about no bandwagon stuff for me But this is about hockey not the Leafs and I m just plain fed up with Bettman the owners the players pretty much everyone except the concession workers ticket takers ACC custodians etc The latter are the only ones who are hurt by this whole fiasco Let s face it the players get enough money to last them a lifetime for just a few years work that is as long as they don t squander it away like most do But that s their problem and one they have to learn to deal with and has nothing to do with these so called negotiations So what do we do about it I like the suggestion that one of my friends had they said they would boycott following in any form Live TV Newspapers Magazines the NHL for the same number of games that they were out on this strike Lockout and as diehard a Leaf fan as I am I think that s exactly what I will do as well So so far they ve been out just over 100 days meaning even if they go back on January 19th I won t get back into watching the NHL until after the playoffs are over this year Nor will I purchase any product endorsed by an NHL player or team I will show them the same interest and concern they had for me as a fan for the last 5 months Can you
