about this event Just watch this video and you ll understand why Diabetes may be what brings us together but Winter Slipstream is so much bigger than a disease Winter Slipstream is about being inspired and uplifted It s about marvelling at the beauty of our country and playing in the snow It s about reaching our goals and dreaming big It s about not feeling like the odd one out when you re cranky and have a parched throat because your sugar is 17 2 It s about not feeling guilty because you need to take a quick break from snowshoeing to treat your reading of 3 1 It s about confidence It s about laughter It s about not shying away from the miserable aspects of this disease and it s about telling the miserable aspects of this disease to take a hike It s about taking a hike It s about celebrating ourselves for slogging through every single day even though diabetes tries its damnedest to get us down It s about learning from one another and being empowered by one another I ve written about the organization behind this event before As its tag line says Connected in Motion really is breathing fresh air into diabetes education In my nearly eighteen years with this disease I have never felt so welcomed or taken so much confidence and strength from a diabetes group These people like to have fun they like to describe each other with terms like diabadass and they love to be outdoors What better way to take on your diabetes than to go skiing across a frozen lake with 44 other diabetics What better way to learn how snowshoeing affects your blood sugar than to tromp through the woods with a group of well seasoned and novice type 1 snowshoeing friends Since its inaugural year I have wanted to attend Winter Slipstream From a distance I have known the people involved in its inception and evolution and for quite some time I have wanted to meet them face to face and pump to pump Amongst other things living on the far side of the country has been a significant impediment This year though things fell into place My schedule was wide open at the end of January and after fleeting deliberation I registered for the Slipstream I exchanged excited emails with Chloe the contents of which read something like Yaaahooooo and Yeeeeehaaw I trekked to the wilds of Central Ontario toque sleeping bag and insulin in tow and I was finally able to connect in person and in motion with this necessary piece of my diabetes puzzle the greatest finger poking crowd this side of anywhere This entry was posted in Diabetes Awareness and Education and tagged Connected in Motion Slipstream Bookmark the permalink Big Delicious Oatmeal News Reel 3 Responses to The Greatest Finger Poking Crowd This Side of Anywhere Andy says March 11 2011 at 9 21 am Laura I m so

community plays a key role in helping me stay sane well most of the time For that I thank you If I could I d cook the whole D OC a beautiful healthful delicious meal and I wouldn t even ask for help with the dishes Posted in Diet and Nutrition gluten free Tagged carb counting food love 5 Comments I Wanna Be Sedated or at least that s what I keep telling myself Posted on May 5 2010 by Laura Brandes I ve been putting it off for almost ten years but tomorrow is the day I m getting my wisdom teeth removed All four of them And I m slightly terrified To gather my thoughts and my nerves I wrote today s post in list form Yes I find lists comforting maybe I should add that to the comforts section The Fears I m nervous about waking up with a blood glucose that is wildly out of range and having to deal with a potential spike or low during surgery from an incorrect correction Oh diabetes you re just full of oxymorons I keep singing the Ramones over and over trying to convince myself that I do in fact want to be sedated As much as I love the Ramones it s not working Sedation scares the daylights out of me No pun intended Ah who am I kidding Pun intended Why does sedation scare the daylights out of me 1 As ridiculous as it sounds I m afraid I won t wake up 2 I m terrified of having a low while I m under 3 I hate that term under Totally creepy While not exactly a fear I m not thrilled that in 24 hours time I m going to look like a cheeks fully stocked with chestnuts in preparation for the cold hard winter ahead tree squirrel who recently lost quite badly I might add to the lightweight champion of the world In other words swollen and bruised The Comforts My endocrinologist is always at the other end of his cell phone About a week ago he called to go over my fasting insulin needs the night before the surgery Stellar At that time he told me that if I felt flustered or needed help after the extraction I was more than welcome to call Double stellar My uncle is a dentist and like my endo is also always at the other end of his cell phone My aunt sent me an email with his number as well as a litany of post extraction advice For example I was instructed to get extra gauze pads because I most likely won t be given enough and I ll have to change the packing every half hour until bleeding stops Gross Daniel got the day off work to take care of me This is probably the biggest comfort of the bunch Smoothies I love them The fact that they are an approved post wisdom teeth removal indulgence

to hopefully get out to Vancouver Island soon So you ll have to come Definitely Since Connected in Motion has been up and running pun intended have you seen participants become more confident when it comes to managing the balancing act of blood sugar exercise food and insulin requirements This is actually something that I m really keen to pursue and do a little bit more research on as we run more events What is the impact of being involved in a program like this I think definitely as a result of the Winter Slipstream Weekend people came away with new tidbits and new things that they were going to try The very first night people arrived around seven o clock and about nine o clock a girl came up to me and said I could go home right now This is amazing I just learned that I can put my infusion set in my arm I never even knew that Why didn t anybody ever tell me this before Your determination to get outside and get active is really inspirational From canoe tripping to dog sledding to bicycle touring it seems you re up for anything So if I were to tell you that you just won the My Favourite Number Million Dollar Lottery what would be your next big adventure There s a long list of things that I would love to do but what I really want to do right now and something that I m working on is the idea of making Connected in Motion mobile something that can be accessible to people with diabetes across the country What I would absolutely love to do with a million dollars would be to buy a funky old tour bus and put together a team of Slipstreamers or people who are living their lives without limits get on a bus and tour across the country from east to west What has been your greatest tool or resource for leading such an active lifestyle For me when I think about my diabetes I think that knowledge is freedom I really try and learn as much as I can about diabetes and about what sort of impact exercise has I try to track everything that happens so that I can feel really confident that I have the knowledge to deal with situations as they arise Diabetes totally can be a barrier but not one that can t be overcome When you re going to be active how do you prepare diabetes wise Have you ever experienced a major diabetes emergency Knock on wood I have not I m lucky to be able to feel my lows and they ll wake me up in the middle of the night In terms of being prepared it totally depends on the exercise that I m about to partake in I wear a pump so I do a lot of basal reductions I always carry glucose on me When I go running I shove
