  • Tackling Type 1 Diabetes | My Favourite Number
    diabetes and also discussed the potential benefits of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems lower A1c better understanding of how food meds exercise affect blood glucose A1c values more frequently under 7 without increased hyopglycemia Sounds pretty nice doesn t it Even though CGMS have been around for years I had my first experience with one back in 2003 and are becoming more prevalent at the present time most patients are hard pressed to find insurance coverage for a CGMS Sidenote After Dr Moldoveanu s presentation I did a quick search and discovered that since September 2008 JDRF International has been advocating coverage for Continuous Glucose Monitoring And then came keynote speaker John Chick and speaking of CGMS only in a room full of people with diabetes would an electronic beeping followed by John Chick s explanation of that s my sugar rising be met with such understanding laughter John Chick told the audience that his diagnosis at the age of 14 was the best worst news of his life After he began to feel better and started gaining weight his diagnosis with diabetes actually served to strengthen his dreams of becoming a professional athlete While his childhood dreams included becoming a major league baseball player and an astronaut he ended up living out his dream of becoming a professional football player In 2007 he began his professional career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and in that first year received a Grey Cup ring to boot Chick readily confesses that he hasn t always managed his diabetes as well as he could or should and credits his improved control to his insulin pump Compared to his blood sugar control on multiple daily injections the pump has allowed him to maintain a more consistent body weight important for a professional football player Overall Chick

  • No D Day | My Favourite Number
    I allowed to say that on No D Day I love mixing colours and flavours and trying new recipes And all of this happens in the kitchen Laughter I love it Need I say more Martin Short Okay mostly I love his character Franck Eggelhoffer in Father of the Bride parts 1 and 2 But I d already used up the letter f on family and I didn t figure it would be particularly nice of me to bump family to make room for Franck Oh Franck why is your accent so strange That character and those movies make me laugh I highly recommend that you watch them now Go on I ll wait Nintendo While I don t play nearly as much now as I did in my youth I still keep my Super Nintendo N64 and GabeCube hooked up in the living room I like racing games I also like Zelda And I recently invested in a copy of Cool Spot for SNES cool Orange First of all nothing rhymes with it Second of all I once wrote a poem for my high school newspaper entitled The Trials and Tribulations of Being an Orange It was deep Third of all orange you glad I didn t say banana Haha see Laughter above Pepper Ann Hil ar i ous I spent many a high school afternoon enjoying the quirky antics and eccentricities of P A my favourite cartoon hero Quinoa I have a box of it in my pantry it starts with q it s gluten free and it s delicious And that s good enough for me Roger Kahn One of my favourite authors and one of the best baseball writers of all time He writes with such emotion poeticism and sincerity about baseball and baseball players and being a writer I had never heard of Roger Kahn until one day leisurely browsing the sports section at the public library I came across a large hardcover first edition of The Boys of Summer I didn t know what the book was but the navy blue and maroon binding made it look important So I pulled it off the shelf I began to read That morning began with wind and hairy clouds It was late March and day rose brisk and uncertain with gusts suggesting January and flashes of sun promising June In every way a season of change had come I was hooked Sweaters Maybe it s the recent change of season or maybe it s simply my love of things handmade and woolen Whatever it is I quite like sweaters Zippered hooded pocketed or not sweaters and tea and fresh from the oven baked goods are the epitome of cosiness on a blustery fall day I have a fairly sizable collection of sweaters and on more than one occasion I have been known to steal Daniel s Thanksgiving It s my favourite holiday and it s right around the corner I love fall produce I love fall

  • Growing Up D: Halloween | My Favourite Number
    of tiny glossy Bazooka Joe comics I kept them in little stacks held together by paper clips Trade candy for chips Chips may not be any healthier than candy but they do have one thing working for them a far less pronounced postprandial blood sugar spike By the end of the night each Halloween my brother would have all the Skittles and I d have every bag of Humpty Dumpty I could get my hands on Sell Halloween haul for profit After tossing out all things gross i e break yer teeth hard gum see above each of the remaining items was designated a monetary value Full sized chocolate bars went for a dollar while their miniature counterparts ran between 0 25 and 0 50 Rockets individual caramels and hard candies went for closer to 0 10 After organizing my loot into categorical piles my parents would pick and choose what they liked and I d reap the rewards I d stash my hard earned cash in my money tube No piggy bank for me Instead I had a giant glass tube with a giant cork lid Worked well Still does where it would mingle with my weekly allowance Keep some chocolate for myself Deprivation is not the name of the game Even though I have to bleed a little before I eat and read the nutrition information on junk food labels I can eat sweet treats with the best of them and throughout my childhood I was always allowed to indulge in moderation One of the great things about Halloween candy is that the fun sized portions usually contain between 10 and 15 grams of carbohydrate that perfect food exchange amount In the weeks following Halloween instead of getting a fruit cup or a Tupperware full of applesauce in
