  • The Big 4-0: 40 Years of Nature on Tour | Canadian Museum of Nature
    four decades Since 1973 with the first national travelling exhibition Canadian Nature Art the CMN has produced and toured more than 60 diverse shows From St John s to Vancouver Iqaluit to Pointe Pelee millions of Canadians in every province and territory have encountered these expertly created exhibitions about the natural world Some of the Museum s star travelling exhibitions have included Passionate Vision a collection of photographs by Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar and Monarca about the impressive monarch butterfly The Geee in Genome was a multifaceted project that brought in Genome Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research as key partners with then prime minister Jean Chrétien attending the exhibition launch This exhibition on the fundamentals of genomics was seen by over one million people Although the full sized show has been decommissioned Genome lives on in the form of two suitcase exhibits Travelling exhibitions have offered a fitting opportunity to raise awareness across the country about CMN scientific research A notable example of this is Ice Age Mammals which features research by two palaeontologists Dr Richard Harington and Dr Natalia Rybczynski Launched in 2005 this popular and enduring show is nowhere near ready to be iced Canada s Waterscapes about our diverse aquatic ecosystems reveals the expertise of Museum biologists Dr Kathy Conlan Arctic ocean bottom dwelling creatures Dr Jean Marc Gagnon St Lawrence River invertebrates Dr André Martel Rideau River mussels and Paul Hamilton lake diatoms Touring for over three years now it s really made a splash across the country For smaller venues that can t accommodate the full sized shows compact exhibitions such as Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year or the information packed kiosk on the Arctic called Sila Clue in to Climate Change offer the natural solution Interestingly to note While the

  • Open House at Natural Heritage Campus | Canadian Museum of Nature
    natural treasures all under one roof On October 19 2013 the Canadian Museum of Nature is opening its doors to its millions of specimens tucked away at the Natural Heritage Campus in Gatineau Quebec Prepare to be amazed awed and inspired during this rare opportunity to explore the huge collections and research facility It s spread over the equivalent of five hockey rinks Curators scientists and volunteers will be on hand to share their vast knowledge about and love for the fascinating collections The last Open House in April 2011 drew an eager crowd of more than 2 000 people Excellent wrote an enthusiastic parent it awoke the scientist in my two sons Thanks for opening the doors Visitors will stroll through some impressive areas The large skeleton room is packed with bones of whales and other animals below a huge wall of antlers which is undeniably eye catching In the fossil room rows upon rows of dinosaur bones some exposed some still encased in protective plaster jackets that date back a century wow every onlooker And just down the hall the National Herbarium of Canada houses one million delicate preserved plants some collected during the famous Parry and Franklin Arctic expeditions of the 1800s In the invertebrate collection many tiny creatures abound from rows of colourful insects to parasites in ethanol to beautiful shells all contributing to a crucial record of the planet s biodiversity These national collections and labs receive a few hundred visiting scientists and students from Canada and abroad throughout the year They come to work with the museum s experts and to study some of these priceless specimens an invaluable scientific inventory amassed over more than 160 years Also accessible during the Open House will be some of the museum s labs where new species

  • Landscapes of Canada Gardens set to take root at Canadian Museum of Nature | Canadian Museum of Nature
    information Canadian Museum of Nature Canadian Museum of Nature Close Illustration that shows the Landscapes of Canada zones on the west side of the museum s property Ottawa June 17 2015 A living outdoor botanical exhibit will soon enliven the grounds of the Canadian Museum of Nature Starting the third week of June the museum will begin landscaping the west side of its property to develop the Landscapes of Canada Gardens The work is expected to be completed by November The plans which were approved in May by the National Capital Commission include landscaping of the museum s site into zones that represent three different ecosystems of Canada Arctic tundra boreal forest and prairie grasslands These mini ecozones will provide an outdoor exhibit area that extends the museum s programming onto the landscape around the museum building CSW Landscapes Architects Limited is the prime consultant for the project For each zone the museum is adding new plants or trees that can typically be found in those regions All are species native to Canada The layout includes areas for natural play a log trail boulders in the tundra terrain and a path through the grasslands zone A space in the prairie zone will also be cleared for an open air classroom or gathering place Construction will continue throughout the summer and fall The work will involve general excavation soil preparation and grading the seeding and planting of new trees grasses and plants representative of the ecozones installation of an Arctic themed sculpture in the tundra zone and relocation of the popular mammoth sculptures to an area along McLeod Street To complete the work and to allow for the plantings to take root the entire park area of the museum s west side will be temporarily fenced off Access is expected to

  • Installation of “iceberg” sculpture at Canadian Museum of Nature | Canadian Museum of Nature
    of the gardens which occupy the west side of the museum s property alongside O Connor Street Work on the gardens started in June 2015 and the landscaping for the boreal forest and prairie grasslands sections is now complete The sculpture s size dramatizes the natural differences in scale that define Canada s Arctic where icebergs and towering mountains contrast with tiny plants that populate the treeless terrain The sculpture will be a vivid reminder of the Arctic as one of Canada s significant natural environments says Meg Beckel the museum s President and CEO We look forward to the steel structure becoming a long lasting attraction for visitors as they can walk under it and enjoy the surrounding Arctic garden The sculpture s parts arrived today from the fabricators Pure Ingenuity Inc of Kingston Installation may take up to a week or more weather permitting The five large components will be anchored to the footings then assembled and welded together Smaller pieces representing ice chunks will be installed around the base Once the sculpture is installed landscapers will lay down granite and limestone rocks as well as Arctic plants to complete the tundra component of the gardens Lishman a Fellow with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society has travelled extensively in the Arctic and Antarctic over the past decades There similar to Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris he became inspired by the spectacular and monumental forms of icebergs I have every hope my work will bring a semblance of the awe felt by most who experience the vast reality of the Canadian Arctic and I feel privileged that this piece will have a permanent home on the grounds of the Canadian Museum of Nature he says Lishman has pursued a career primarily as a sculptor for over half a
