    The event will be held in Edmonton Alberta next August 11 13 The Convention is the supreme governing body of our Union Grassroots delegates elected across the country by Local Union members will come together to chart a course for the NHU over the next three years Resolutions policy papers and our Union s operating budget are discussed debated and put to a vote When adopted they become the official policy of the NHU and are implemented by the National Council Our 2014 Convention is the third since a reformed and reconstructed NHU came into being in 2008 Given the increasing attacks by the Conservative government on federal public service workers delegates to this gathering will assume a particularly important responsibility A special Convention section of the NHU Web site outlining general information delegate information and required forms and documentation will be launched in the near future So watch for it soon NHU scholarships deadline fast approaching Posted January 3 2014 The deadline is fast approaching for receipt of applications for 2013 National Health Union Scholarships Submissions must be received in the National Office by 4 p m Friday January 17 Each year our Union awards four scholarships annually to

    a number of NHU Locals And it s up for its regular cyclical review and amendment Intended to facilitate the recruitment and retention of staff delivering government programs in isolated locations the Directive is designed to recognize the disadvantages and abnormally high costs of living and working in isolated posts as well as to ensure that employees in government housing are treated in a manner equivalent to employees renting owning similar accommodation from private or commercial sources The NJC a consultative body of representatives of management and public service unions develops and issues Directives covering public service wide benefits and conditions of employment A number of these are included in collective agreements along with a grievance procedure for settling disputes on their interpretation Our bargaining agent the Public Service Alliance of Canada represents the interests of NHU members at the NJC It has issued a formal call for input into possible changes to the Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive The PSAC s input call should be taken seriously as Locals can and do lose their Isolated Post status with significant impacts on the cost of living in those areas The PSAC has provided a downloadable input form HERE Once

    Important revisions have been made to many key sections of the Directive from those dealing with pesticides and electrical safety to protective equipment and clothing and the operation of Workplace Health and Safety Committees The NJC is a joint union management consultative body that sets uniform employment practices working conditions and benefits across the federal public service Congratulations to our four successful NHU 2010 Scholarship recipients Posted January 12 2011 Well done and good luck in your chosen career paths to the four young recipients of the 2010 NHU Scholarships The successful applicants are Jessica Gomes who received 3 000 to put towards her studies for an Education degree at the University of Winnipeg Cissie Liu who received 3 000 to continue her studies for a degree in International Economics and Development at the University of Ottawa Vaughn Boyer who was awarded 3 000 to support his work towards a Bachelor of Actuarial Mathematics at the University of Manitoba and Ceonne Durette who received 2 000 to back her studies towards a degree in Psychology at Mount Royal University in Calgary As per our scholarship Guidelines all four are children of NHU members in good standing Every scholarship applicant was required to complete a detailed application form along with a 500 word essay on the topic How are unions relevant in today s society The essays of all four scholarship recipients along with detailed information on our scholarship program can be read on the Scholarships page of our Web site by clicking HERE The large photo above shows NHU National Vice President Patricia Todd presenting a scholarship cheque to Jessica Gomes as her father John looks on The smaller photos from left to right are of Cissie Liu Vaughn Boyer and Ceonne Durette An important change to our Scholarship Program
