by standing together are so much more powerful and effective in dealing with the employer than any individual could ever hope to be Think I m blowing smoke Think again Day in and day out the NHU and the PSAC are fighting for your rights and betterment And in ways you don t even notice Most visibly the union is your voice in the workplace But we re also your voice in dealing with senior Departmental management with Treasury Board with the Courts with the media and with the greater public All this work on your behalf would be impossible without the dues paid by all NHU members Many people say union dues are like insurance payments You hope you never have to use them but they guarantee protection when you need them But the union is so much more than that Unlike insurance companies we re 110 per cent on your side Because once again you are our shareholder The services and staff available to union members cost money The NHU and the PSAC are completely self financing independent non profit organizations Our ONLY source of income is union dues which are determined by grassroots members like you at our National Convention Union dues are the lifeblood of every union Each NHU member pays his or her fair share so that everybody gains Members like you get a tremendous return on their relatively modest investment in the operation and activities of their union And to boot your dues are tax deductible I m not trying to preach or to sound holier than thou When I first joined the federal government on the 1970s I too took the union for granted I just assumed the workplace rights and benefits I enjoyed were always there Over the years as I got more involved I came to appreciate that these rights and benefits were not showered on us by a grateful employer like manna from heaven Rather they were won by the union often in lengthy and hard fought battles with management and the government of the day So stop and think what it would be like to work for the federal government WITHOUT THESE UNION WON BENEFITS job security provisions of the Workforce Adjustment Directive negotiation of updated Classification Standards that reflect the real work you do Cumulative Time recognition for members in acting positions elimination of differing Zones of Pay enhanced benefits for part time workers a Dental Plan a No Discrimination clause in the collective agreement a Sexual Harassment clause a Technological Change clause Compressed Work Week or Flexible Hours clauses Expanded definition of family and same sex spousal rights Maternity Leave Parental Leave Family Leave Long term leave for the care of an elder parent Care and Nurturing Leave Bereavement Leave Personal Leave Pre retirement Leave I could go on and on I made the above list to point out why it s all too easy to forget where those rights and benefits you enjoy came from Why
