  • NMA - Services: Design: Conquering the redesign
    provide your design team with the key elements upon which to base your design Whenever a design question comes up you can look to the objectives to find the answer Chances are if it s not specifically mentioned in the objectives it s not worth spending too much time on When your design embodies your website objectives you should be able to point to your design and then point to a specific objective This can come in very handy during the approval process when explaining a graphic mockup to a business person The website objectives will guide two of your three design principles your priorities and your connections Priorities are often represented by objects that embody the key messages you are trying to communicate Connections are the pathways your visitors navigate to the information they seek from you Building a design in stages Websites are multi dimensional They have a two dimensional flat screen image known as a web page But they also have depth That s why we speak of drilling down deeper into a website to get to interior pages Before you create the graphic design elements the look and feel of the homepage being the most important you need to know the multi dimensional components that will be part of that design and how those components are organized That s why we create two preliminary design documents the site map and the wireframe layout The site map Represents the organization of web pages on the website It doesn t have to show every page on the site but it does have to show the pathways that a website visitor would take to browse for information Uses boxes with names to represent the pages and lines to show the connections from page to page The wireframe layout Represents the organization of objects on a given page Many pages share similar layouts and can be templated use the same basic layout But the homepage is its own beast with a unique and complex layout and that s usually where we start Uses boxes with names to to show how the various key message objects and navigation components are laid out on the page Even at this early stage the site map and wireframes must be tied directly to the website objectives so that they inform the final design document the graphic mockup The graphic mockup Follows the same layout as the wireframe Incorporates branding elements such as logo corporate colours and key messages Adds images and graphic designs to make the page come alive Brings out the priorities and connections as points of interest on the page Together these three documents make up the Website Design Specification Following current best practices in web design To successfully re design your website you must also look beyond your organization s unique website objectives After all you re not alone Every organization faces the same challenges and each one is trying to build a better website In fact this evolution has been
