    This work includes conducting long term planning necessary to ease traffic congestion in urban areas and facilitate the movement of people and goods along our highways and across our borders This division is also responsible for management of transit policy and programs including the ministry s relationship with the province s transit agency Metrolinx Road User Safety plays a central role in ensuring Ontario retains its distinction as one of the safest road jurisdictions in all of North America Road User Safety works with many partners to improve mobility and road safety by promoting and regulating responsible driving behaviour and enforcing laws regarding commercial vehicles Provincial Highways Management supports the ministry s commitment to providing a safe efficient reliable transportation system by overseeing the operation maintenance engineering construction and program administration functions for the provincial highway network The division oversees year round highway maintenance and protects public investment in highway infrastructure The division also provides airport services in 29 remote northern communities and ferry programs and services in communities such   • Northern Ontario Highways Strategy, August 2005 - Executive Summary
    The Ontario government will invest 700 million over the next five years to expand northern highways improving safety and efficiency and boosting economic development Fifty four new bridges and 62 kilometres of new roadway will be added within the next five years For example The four laning of Highway 69 for seven kilometres between Parry Sound and Nobel is underway and should be complete in 2008 The four laning of Highway 11 for six kilometres between Emsdale and Katrine is underway and should be complete by the end of this year The Northern Ontario Highways Strategy will accelerate the completion of the four laning of Highways 11 and 69 within seven and 12 years respectively The four laning of Highway 69 is the largest construction project underway in Ontario It s estimated that 37 million cubic metres of rock and dirt will have to be moved over the course of the project That s 22 times the volume of the Rogers Centre formerly Skydome The Highway 69 Action Plan was released by the Minister of Northern Development and Mines and the Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal in late June Improving Safety and Efficiency The 1 8 billion investment in highway improvements and expansion will make our roads safer and more efficient This will mean 1 1 billion invested in highway improvements and 700 million to expand our highways This will involve more than 100 projects such as adding new truck climbing lanes on steep hills realigning curves and adding new interchanges near major urban centres For example A northbound passing lane will be added to Highway 11 north of Highway 67 by the end of this year Two passing lane extensions are being added to Highway 17 east of Highway 94 and should be complete by 2009 An eastbound truck
