a new school they will need to learn the route For most of our urban kids elementary school is just a walk away For teens it may well involve a bus If at all possible enlist the parents of other kids in the neighbourhood in this plan It s important that kids learn how to get themselves to school but it takes some teaching School likely represents the first time your children will be away from constant direct supervision and you will not only not know what they are up to all day you won t have a way to find out everything It s not like daycare or preschool They will make friends you will never meet will do things you ll never discover be honest now what did you do at school you still haven t told your parents It s time to start letting go It s time for our children starting to handle their world on their terms And getting themselves to and from school is also part of that During the walk or bus ride to school kids can make the transition from being your child to being Mrs Simpson s student It s not unlike the transition you need to make when traveling from work to home It s difficult for children to sit still Now there s a revelation When they walk to school they are guaranteed to do better in class because they will have had some exercise before they are expected to sit at their desk and pay attention Now that it s close to the start of school it s a good idea to shift the daily schedule That means going back to regular bedtime and getting up in the morning If they have been sleeping in every morning for the past two months it ll be challenging to get them up and moving on time without some preparation Have some great plans for the few mornings before school starts so they can get used to the new regime If your kids are going to a new school hold off on the clothes buying Wait until the first weekend so your kids have a chance to see what the other kids are wearing in this new environment There s nothing worse than outfitting a child for school only to have them announce on day 3 that nothing looks okay and they simply will not wear any of their new clothes On that first weekend also sit down with the kids and take a look at the week How did it go What worked and what needs tweaking No plan is set in concrete Figure out what works for your family and life will run more smoothly Bringing Parenting Today to your event Parenting Today is keen to speak as part of your professional development event parenting workshop or workplace wellness support program I offer keynotes and workshops have written books and have ongoing newspaper columns books blogs and newsletters And

  • New Grandma Plays with the Infants | Parenting Today
and your infant I figure this a role that this old grandmother can take I can dance with one while Mom dances with the other It will be silly but I bet we ll have a blast Peek a boo is a popular game with babies It s not just fun it actually has an important role is helping them learn that things can disappear and then re appear So they learn that Mommy or Daddy can go away to work but that they will return Babies love movement but it s important to remember to never shake a baby and to keep his head supported at all times Babies heads are too heavy for their young necks and any play or activity that caused the baby s head to shake back and forth may lead to brain injury or death Shaking tossing or jerking a baby is extremely dangerous Babies also like to look at things in the house When my children were infants I looked at the pictures on our walls and realized that their placement made no sense My baby was down on the floor and the art they could look at was up high So I went out and bought some inexpensive posters with big pictures and pinned them to the bottom of the wall The poster touched the baseboard And because they didn t cost much I was fine when they got past looking wanted to touch which usually meant the poster was eventually crumpled and ripped Babies learn through their senses They don t just look they taste they touch and they listen Their first books should be ones that can be abused in these ways If they can t handle their books they will avoid them But if they can touch and maybe rip the pages old magazines work very well for this they will learn to love the printed word and books Babies are too young for screens Ipads and computers can wait until they are preschoolers As infants they need to total experience of things they can really manipulate and play with Have fun with your babies Remember a baby that is smiling and laughing will not be crying and will be learning about his world If you want to learn the gender and size of the twins I will be posting it later after I meet them Come to my facebook page or follow me on twitter Bringing Parenting Today to You Parenting Today is keen to speak as part of your professional development event parenting workshop or workplace wellness support program I offer keynotes and workshops have written books and have ongoing newspaper columns books blogs and newsletters And no matter what the actual topic they all share a basic value that I call P U R E Parenting P is a parenting plan U is unconditional love R is respect for your child as he is right now E is encouragement These make up the framework of any

been interested in hearing from all my friends and colleagues about grandparenting And they all agree on one thing It is the greatest experience in the world My sister says that I will experience the moment and she says I will know it when it happens I can hardly wait On the topic of the day to day reality the stories and advice range all over the map On the one hand I have been told to drop all possible gigs for the next year and on the other to protect my time and only be with the grandkids when I feel like it Talk about ridiculous to ridiculous This has been good news for me because it says be the grandparent you want to be There is no template I will make my role an ongoing open and honest conversation with my children They will tell me what works and what doesn t and I will respect that I will tell them what works and what doesn t and they will respect that I loved parenting my children I will love being grandma Posted in Family Concerns Infants 1 Comment One Response to Becoming Grandma 3 Julie H Ferguson says July 16 2012 at 9 56 am A tip I was happy that my daughter and son in law decided with me that they would not tell me when she went into labour but call me as soon as they could after the baby was born and all was well Why I remember my mother telling how agonizingly anxious she was when I went into labour and she waited for so long to hear news They even sent me a photo to reassure me I instantly bonded with my new grand daughter The plan worked brilliantly for all of

choice of everything what do they really want to do with their time Let s take a look at the idea of wasting time Are they wasting time or are they learning how to consider their wishes how to plan their time how to manage their activities Are they using the time to dream Are they finding themselves considering different ideas and activities Just think one day in the future they may take a break from their hectic lives allow their minds to simply roam and come up with a cure for cancer Okay it s a bit over the top but it could happen Another way you can tackle Hayley when she s bored is to involve her in whatever you are doing You can cook together fold laundry or garden It s a great time to simple be with her and chat Be careful not to let all the structured time cut into the creative time Let s say your kids have taken blankets out to the deck and created a town They have included all their stuffed toys their little cars and truck and who knows what else Let the project continue Dealing with boredom is actually simple First you need to accept that your child s boredom may be annoying but is not your problem Then you need to believe that from boredom can come many of life s lessons such as problem solving dreaming planning on your own trying out new activities In other words taking responsibility for your time Try it yourself Maybe you are also over scheduled Take some time to just be or as they say to stop and smell the roses Bringing Parenting Today to your event Parenting Today is keen to speak as part of your professional development event parenting workshop or workplace wellness support program I offer keynotes and workshops have written books and have ongoing newspaper columns books blogs and newsletters And no matter what the actual topic they all share a basic value that I call P U R E Parenting P is a parenting plan U is unconditional love R is respect for your child as he is right now E is encouragement These make up the framework of any resources that will come from Parenting Today These four pillars are the essential ingredients for raising healthy children who will develop into capable young men and women I am based on the west coast but will be doing some traveling this Fall I ll be in Toronto September 8 to 10 and in Winnipeg from December 2 to 4 I am happy to extend these trips if you wish to book an event I will also be in Calgary and can coordinate that trip to meet your scheduling needs This entry was posted in Family Concerns News School Age Teens Bookmark the permalink Becoming Grandma 2 Becoming Grandma 3 3 Responses to What to do when Hayley is bored Lana says July 12 2012 at 9
