  • - Just because you say it
how often we say things wish things or want things to be true but then we don t really do anything to make them so Which naturally lead me to things like corporate visions missions and values Just because you say them print them hang them on your wall doesn t mean they re true You ve got to put your shoulder into them work them LIVE them If respect for your colleagues and partners is one of your values it better damn well pervade everything you do right down to how you and your people are evaluated at half year and end year reviews If diversity is one of your values it better not just show up as your head of HR If you say you re innovative you d better be everywhere from your products to the way you incentivize your people Otherwise you re just a dreamer Never Stop Wishing Or your full of it Never Stop Politicking Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don

  • - Get into the groove
physically preparing for the run so I didn t know how to solve it when something went horribly wrong my ipod was stuck on Where the Hell is Bill I m not one to run without music as I prefer not to listen to my ragged gasping breath For 9 long kilometres yesterday that s exactly what I did It was either that or get too familiar with Bill My failure to understand the technology actually helped me learn something new about myself First I had the power to change the channel so I did I shut it off and ran music free We all face obstacles and have to make hard choices and this was a valid one to make Second because I was forced to listen to myself my breathing my footfalls my arm swings I realized that my form contrary to my assumption that it sucks was actually pretty good I wasn t scuffing or stomping my feet like the woman next to me that s bad read why here My breath though heavy was controlled and consistent And for the last 4kms I actually hit a groove I NEVER hit a groove So what s the lesson here Superficially it s learn your damn technology But more importantly it s check your assumptions because often they re wrong I m off for a recovery walk now This time I ll leave the ipod at home and just listen to the birds And maybe I ll think about Bill and where the heck he s gotten to Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t

  • - What the bunny finally taught me
thought it would be fun to trick drivers into thinking they were about to crush a fuzzy little mammal I took a risk and would thus suffer the consequences if I got caught I didn t It took me a long time to learn the lesson but I think at 40 I finally get it Fear is a powerful motivator Every day so many of us make choices that allow fear to be lorded over us and then believe whatever it tells us to be the truth We buy things we can t afford and then worry something will happen that will take it away from us We ll get blamed for something We ll lose our jobs We won t be able to get another one or one that pays what we need to live on We ll lose our house and have to live in our mother s basement But rather than fixing the source of the problem in this common scenario coming to grips with our financial insecurity we just believe fear s press And we become more and more entrenched in a fearful and unhappy life Life is tough enough without the added layer of confidence crushing fear So dispense with it Don t let catastrophic thinking be your guide Step back from the brink and assess the real risks and consequences from a neutral position And for your own sake start living within your means Financial security and better still financial freedom are the great slayers of fear I m not saying there s no time to be afraid like for example when you re shivering in a bush waiting to be collared by the cops because sometimes it s warranted And anxiety and stress can be good in moderation They keep us sharp But

  • - Be who you are
This was exciting stuff for a political junkie like me So imagine my disappointment when Professor Boring stood behind the podium and directly read from the 200 textbook we were all expected to read anyway Seriously What I needed from him was his experience the lowdown the details from the trenches the words of a seasoned politician What I got was his idea of what a professor should be theoretical balanced agnostic snorefest Eighteen years later I still want my money back If we all spent less time acting like who we think we should be versus just being who we are I bet you we d all be more successful And none of us would be boring Well maybe Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May 2014 March 2014 February 2014 November 2013

  • - Beef-like flavour
out there purporting to be all authentic and real If it looks smells and tastes like chicken it still may not be chicken trust me I m a shifty vegetarian And most of us are catching on Real leaders lead Fake leaders talk about leadership but can t lead their way out of their own office let alone a crisis a change or a charge to Valhalla Real businesses that care about their customers their people and their communities get on with it while others just bla bla bla about it and apply for corporate awards My advice take note take care and take cover As William Gibson suggests in his latest book only marginally related to this topic but telling nonetheless distrust that particular flavour I know I will Abe well he s just a dumb dog though a pretty freaking cute one Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know

will have a sustained impact on their development as a team but so far things are looking better than they did just a week ago Sometimes from darkness comes light It s just too bad that it takes a life altering moment an illness an accident a death to pull people out of their entrenched corners and unite them in the centre But that s what s makes us human isn t it Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Sometimes from crisis springs maturity Posted by admin March 5th 2012 No responses Over the last several weeks I ve observed a senior leadership team struggle through the storming phase of their development It hasn t been pretty but often it isn t It s called storming for a reason Just as I was thinking it couldn t sink any lower the leader of the team announced a serious family emergency was going to take her out of the mix for an extended period of time Ut oh if they don t have a parent who s going to keep them from scratching each other s eyeballs out It s still too soon to say for sure if this latest curveball will have a sustained impact on their development as a team but so far things are looking better than they did just a week ago Sometimes from darkness comes light It s just too bad that it takes a life altering moment an illness an accident a death to pull people out of their entrenched corners and unite them in the centre But that s what s makes us human isn t it Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you

  • - The difference between right and stupid
between being right and being stupid There is a certain level of collusion that exists in our traffic court system and it s dismaying The system is designed to plead people down guilty or innocent take our money with as little fuss as possible and move on to the next cash grab It s a nice little racket they ve got going on The police officers are very friendly with the court staff and they do this little dance to convince the rest of us that whatever we say or do we ll be found guilty Initially I fought the pull of a plead I was going to have my day in court The prosecutor asked both the officer and I to share our versions of the truth he with his little flip book me with my pictures and conviction Then the prosecutor informed me this is a case of his word against yours you know how this is going to end don t you Indeed I did Regardless of my innocence I d be found guilty lose points for something I didn t do and pay an even bigger fine So I held my nose and plead guilty to a lower charge Then I came home and took a shower I know there are hills to die on and though it pained me to no end this wasn t one of them There is a problem here though The system is designed to reward the real perpetrators of traffic crimes with a break while it punishes the innocent all the while the city and the province cash in So do the insurance companies who troll for convictions and jack up our annual rates Sometimes in life we have to make hard choices and sometimes all the options suck Regardless

  • - Beware of too big to care
many others like it just don t seem to care Companies who don t care should beware The prevailing attitude in these organizations if they don t like it they can leave and we ll find someone else has pretty short legs You may have a recognizable brand and a finely crafted veneer of a reputation but it doesn t take long for the smart ones to figure you out Eventually you run through string A and have to move onto string B And oh the humanity once you ve exhausted string B and have to move on to string C The negative spiral continues The smart and savvy people are onto your game and they don t want to work for you Good luck running a successful business on the C string So what is a poor soul stuck in one of these faceless organizations to do Option A is to leave but I get that some folks can t yet One piece of advice here is to get yourself out of any bad debt you re in so you re not beholden to an overlord and can get the heck out but that s a topic for another rant Option B is to accept it begrudgingly and let it wear you down Option C is best I think if Option A isn t really an option for you Blow your bubble Make the space you re in as fantastic as you can You have the power it all really starts with your attitude And who knows maybe you ll show them how it s done in the process and they ll start to stir from their arrogant and misguided slumber Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us
