  • - My bad is not sufficient
and honourable and as a result my well earned mellow wasn t harshed by the incident If it ended there it would be a nice story about how taking accountability is always the right thing to do Unfortunately it doesn t end there because apparently this person s idea of taking accountability includes strings In order to pay for her mistake the perpetrator wanted me to go to her preferred body shop whom she d pay in cash to get the work done After all as she suggested her bumper looked way worse than my car I of course never saw her bumper and it was only going to be 400 to fix that It s not going to cost 400 to fix my car it s going to cost 1200 Though she may be less than thrilled by the amount and would prefer I d drive all over town getting cheaper quotes or potentially getting substandard service from her cash under the table hack she s paying it She may be out a grand but I m out my car for a week plus the two hours it took to get the quote I did get from a guy I know and trust by the way And my investment my car is now less perfect than it was when I innocently parked it on the road last Friday Taking accountability doesn t absolve us from responsibility and it doesn t give us the right to dictate terms of recompense A truly honourable person admits fault and stands up and takes it on the chin all 1200 bucks of it Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too

  • - How about a little civil disobedience
of days and hours we re in the office into what we re doing while we re there certainly not communicating with others the way we do in real life thanks to the hundreds of kilometers of firewalls that prevent us from accessing social media for example and what we wear Seriously when did I turn 10 again Success doesn t come from strict adherence to outdated rules So if you want to be successful why not practice a little civil disobedience while you re getting your real work done Go ahead wear jeans on Thursday though you re only supposed to wear them Fridays you know Post an update to Facebook or Twitter via your smartphone during the day while you re supposed to be working Even better do this if you re the leader Maybe eventually they whoever is obsessing about the rules will get it Because it s not about what times we re in the office the number of weeks of vacation we re entitled to whether or not we re accessing non business related websites which ones are those by the way Aren t Facebook and Twitter examples of really successful businesses we should pay attention to or what kind of pants we put on this morning it s about the results It s a simple choice really Give people the freedom to do their work in whatever way works best for them and they ll deliver Obsess about the rules and you ll surround yourself with a bunch of children who can t find their way out of your paper bag Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to

  • - Start 2012 by giving a care
how will you get them push through They ve got to care otherwise they re not going to go to the wall for you If you re asking them to do something hard you ve got to give them something in return and in tough economic times that surely isn t money So what are you going to give them I ll give you a hint check the title of this blog Think of it this way if it winds up being a great year you ll have one year of caring about them under your belt which means your colleagues will have one year of caring about you under their belts too Good karma for next year whatever it brings Win win Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May 2014 March 2014 February

  • - Be envied, not envious
best businesses ARE personal and most businesses that take a personal interest in their people don t suck You see how that all hangs together right Want to be envied by rather than envious of your friends partners or competitors in the coming year Start by taking your work more personally Because there s nothing more meaningful to thoughtful caring colleagues the kind that help make your business successful by the way than to be cared for and connected to their employers So get on with it it s not rocket science Then go pour yourself a glass of eggnog You re welcome and happy holidays Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May 2014 March 2014 February 2014 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 July 2013 June 2013 April 2013 March 2013

  • - Once more into the breach
ve been there myself and it s kind of like breaking up There are a lot of theorists out there that suggest that what drives our anxiety around these types of scenarios is the prospect of looking bad selfish ungrateful or worse stupid For me it goes right back to fear We re afraid of how the person receiving our news will react This is true in many scenarios from quitting our jobs to delivering bad news to employees to negotiating a business deal especially one that involves money This is how I try to deal with it because I m not always successful I think about the worst experience I ve ever had that is even remotely related to what I m about to do so in the case of resigning I think about the first time I quit a job In that case it was with a small company and my boss who also owned that company took it really personally It got ugly really ugly The chance of that happening again at the same level of emotional intensity is slim because I learned from that experience and choose not to put myself in similar scenarios So nothing can be as bad as that With this in mind I suck it up and step into the breach In most cases it turns out fine and the anxiety I had preceding the delivery of the message was worse than delivering the message itself Just ask Laurie She survived So will you Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent

  • - Ode to Stan, AKA dont be a jerk
an asshole to get ahead He didn t and yet he got ahead It s simple really He didn t have to divert energy or attention to build the asshole facade advocated by some of his jaundiced leaders and peers Instead he was himself and harnessed his energy to do good work and inspire others to do good work too You don t need to be a jerk to get ahead especially if you re not a jerk by nature If you are a jerk by nature good luck to you Because most people I know and boy are some of them really talented would rather do good work for Stan than for you Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May 2014 March 2014 February 2014 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013

  • - Burst that myth
she throws in a few sprints to change things up to wake up her muscles to sharpen her focus The advantage she has over the average office worm is she s already getting lots of exercise Us we re sitting in front of our computers banging out stuff lots of it inane and lots of it that requires a redo because we ve lost our focus or drive part way through the exercise Or worse we re stuck in a meeting about nothing going around and around in circles rather than getting our work done There s a simple solution to this Get up and step away But not for five minutes how about an hour Three hours Thirty minutes Whatever works best for you But many of us can t We can t because our boss is watching and if we do we re officially slacking Or we re the boss and if we do this we re coasting and shoving responsibility to our underlings Are we though Seriously if I didn t take that run at 10 13 this morning I d still be slamming my head against the wall trying to come up with a solution to a problem I solved 10 minutes into a 30 minute run Last week if I hadn t stepped away from my keyboard to get a haircut at 2 in the afternoon I d have to gut and rework that great presentation I cranked out as soon as I got home just like running I often get great ideas when someone s washing my hair We ve advanced so much but really we haven t advanced at all Our old ways of thinking must be in office to do work must be at desk to do work must do work from

  • - Blow your bubble
I can care about a bubble starts to form As time goes by I give more of myself to them and they give more of themselves to me We grow together The bubble gets stronger Inside the bubble we have enough space and respect to be ourselves We can also see outside the bubble and sometimes what we see isn t pretty politics backbiting undermining But not in our bubble We celebrate our individual or collective wins and support each other when things are tough The bubble is indeed the place to be Sometimes the bubble breaks the business goes sideways people leave No worries Once you ve been in a bubble you ll want another You don t have to wait for it though Go on start blowing Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July
