  • - You oughta be in pictures…
complex and difficult to understand by IT geeks let alone average Joes just trying to do their regular day to day jobs So out with the 100 page Power Point decks and in with the subway map an analogy we built on to help end users see the impacts to their own departments and the knock on effects across departments plotted against a timeline To quote the article this simple but powerful idea spurred quicker buy in and deeper collaboration We ll take that The lesson SAP has its own special language affectionately known in our circle as SAPANESE So like a country welcoming visitors who don t speak the language when you need to convey a message like bathroom locations or in our case what s happening to whom when don t use words use pictures Mel and Krishan Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go

  • - Perception obscures reality
I run on four foot wide sidewalks every other day and never fall off Five feet is wide Obviously the difference is context Five feet is like an eternity when you re on the ground Eleven hundred feet up it s the sliver that separates you from splat Think about that the next time you unleash change on your team Remember it s not just the what the why and the how it s also the where specifically where they are in relation to the change Their perception can obscure your reality Make sure you level set The last thing you want to do is talk to someone like they re on terra firma when they re actually teetering on the edge of the Matterhorn Context matters Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May

  • - There is no map
in our plan that five or ten year view that has us sporting grandiose titles and making buckets of money by the time we re 40 That laser focus something that was drilled into me for the first five years of my career is of little comfort when an unexpected change knocks us off our cherished plan I think it s okay to not know ex actly where we ll be in five years After all being adaptable allows us to embrace new opportunities we didn t even know existed and to rebound when we inevitably get sideswiped by an unexpected change It s so hard though to just sit back and enjoy the ride isn t it Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May 2014 March 2014 February 2014 November 2013 October 2013

  • - When it really matters, the only way out is through…
bungee jumping Watching contestant after contestant suck it up and hurl themselves off hypoxia inducing bridges got me thinking that s nuts And that s the way to do it When faced with a challenge especially one we fear like sickening heights or a big change most humans this one included tend to look for alternatives Duck and cover Run away Go around it over it under it Very rarely is our first response to just go through it I ve heard that old chestnut a million times it s not a hill I m willing to die on And certainly there are many hills that aren t worth the sacrifice But the ones that are and we re smart enough to know which ones are deserve our full attention and our greatest effort When it really matters the only way out is through Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know

  • - You are the driver
little secret you are the driver You always retain the power to stay the course or switch lanes Don t abdicate because you re unsure afraid or cynical That s tantamount to taking your hands off the wheel to cover your face and is risky and foolish Stay involved Get the facts and assess them Then make some decisions I like what I m hearing so I ll stick it out for a while to see how it unfolds or I don t like where we re headed so I m going to find something else Either option is legitimate It s when we hide somewhere in the middle that we go over the proverbial cliff splat Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on Let me go Archives March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 November 2014 July 2014 May 2014 March 2014 February 2014 November 2013 October 2013 September

  • - To get there, you gotta leave here…
long walk down the hallway and onto the streets of Unfettered by Employment When I came back to the present I smiled to myself So much has happened since then And that place that I didn t want to leave three years ago well it doesn t exist anymore It was a good reminder you can t go back and really why would you want to What time and distance brings is so hard to absorb when we re in the throes of change We cling we kick and scream we cry we sugar coat the good old days even when many of them weren t and hope that all the craziness will stop and everything will return to normal All the while we fear the future because it will be different from the present which even if we can t see it is really the past and already over We humans are funny that way Here s what I ve learned on my adventure so far change doesn t kill you In fact change does us a huge favour by shaking us out of complacency There is so much out there whether it s with the company that s changing around you or in the green fields you re about to till alone It s great to think warm thoughts of the past but anticipate even warmer ones of the future They re coming A few years from now maybe it ll be you be sitting around a table talking as excitedly as Phil about the book you re about to write or the business you re going to start Just remember you can t get there if you don t leave here Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean

  • - Say what you mean
of your own home but if you decide to contest it you have to arrive in person at the conveniently located sarcasm alert provincial court house wait with the rest of the great unwashed and complete a form to signal your intent to contest Midway through the form is the following question Do you request the officer who completed the certificate of offence to attend your trial with the options yes or no Huh Is this a trick question After being reprimanded for using a red pen on my form I tell the kind woman behind the bulletproof glass that I don t understand the question Are you contesting the ticket she barks Yes I am So answer yes Okay then Perhaps the question should be worded differently like are you contesting the ticket There that s better isn t it Think about how long the lines get in government offices how cranky the folks waiting become and in turn how testy the unfortunate souls on the other side of the counter grow It s a pit of misery Maybe we could reduce the level of anxiety and irritation just a little by making things simpler and clearer Let s start by asking straightforward questions That goes for all of us regardless of what kind of work we engage in especially during change Straightforward questions lead to straightforward answers It s simple really say what you mean and mean what you say Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don t wanna know Kiran on

  • - Lessons from loafers
In the end the most comfortable thing for him to do was to let them do what they wanted which inevitably led to video streaming and lots of sleeping There s a good chance though they wanted him to get them off their PSP butts and show them something pretty cool like the Distillery District or West Queen West It could have been fun no But he didn t bite After all it s their vacation maybe they just want to sleep Or maybe they don t Here s the nut sometimes what we think will be more uncomfortable for our people is exactly what they need as Sheryl Crow says a change will do ya good So maybe our inability to get traction on change is less about them and more about us and our willingness to take the initiative I know it s a drag but sometimes the leader has to lead Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to
