  • - and then you realize, you’re a liar too (and what to do to fix it)
automatic pilot In the first chapter of our book An Honest Living Luisa Girotto and I talk about how important it is to be honest all the time To be honest you ve got to be present Being honest doesn t require you to be mean or a killjoy but it does require you to be conscious Time to take my own advice My dad doing what he did best measuring twice cutting once It s a new year and as an independent consultant I m finally catching up with many of the clients I haven t seen since before December 19th the day my father died In back to work conversation they re inevitably asking me about my holidays I m not one to harsh their post holiday mellow is that even a thing but I am an advocate of honesty So I m stopping and thinking before I respond If it s a client I know well that I have a personal connection with I tell them what happened The holidays were challenging my dad died And we talk more about it if they like If it s a client I know less well I m finding diversion works ah the holidays can be challenging no Here s to a terrific 2015 Either way I m just being honest and finding my way back to equilibrium in the face of what s honestly been one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life Thanks for asking And here s to that amazing 2015 Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened

  • - I don’t wanna know…
time I understand that Ghomeshi was their golden egg I was a huge fan too But the CBC is the CBC not Jian Ghomeshi And one of the primary roles of HR is workplace health and safety And one of the primary roles of communication is reputation management To that end how could CBC brass ignore the innuendo that seemed to be swirling around him at media events concerts etc How could they not hear the whispers from others in the media about how Ghomeshi was a creepy perve with bad pick up lines How could they not smell the cologne How could they explain why feeder universities stopped sending interns to Q their flagship show that conceivably anyone with a pulse would want to work for It s easy to point this stuff out now after social media and the like have filled in so many blanks but come on the signs were there They re an investigative journalism powerhouse for sake Why didn t they quietly turn over some rocks How could they not see the growing risk to their people s health and safety and to their fragile reputation Easy They didn t want to see it They left the party early so they wouldn t have to deal with the debauchery live And now they have to manage the fallout I applied for an internal communication job at the CBC in 2007 I can t believe I m saying this but I m so glad I didn t get it Not because I couldn t handle this it would suck but I d get by but instead because I couldn t handle the CBC s unwillingness to handle it until it was too late Mel One Response to I don t wanna know Mel says December

becoming the new normal in business period Observe Booked a meeting with someone but something else has come up Forget about it No need to call them to give them a heads up at all but if you do make sure you wait until the very last minute so they can t use that precious time in another way Promised someone something like important data they need to complete a task and still haven t sent it No biggie If they really needed it they d call or email you right Oh yeah when was the last time you checked your voicemail And wow isn t there a lot of unopened mail in your inbox Haven t bothered to learn the proper spelling of a colleague s name He s Bob but you call him Bill Hey call him whatever you want particularly if he s a consultant he s just happy to get your money Received a deliverable from someone but still haven t acknowledged receipt or thanked them days or weeks later Yeah it s okay to take a pass on that one too especially if they stayed up all night getting it just perfect for you Classy I consider myself extremely fortuitous to have some great clients who treat me with respect I believe it s get what you give in business and in life read my book An Honest Living for more and I try to be responsive and respectful of people at all times And I m so delighted when I get it in return It s nice when we respect each other isn t it This isn t rocket science it s just basic class Perhaps it s time we all go back to class and re learn some good old fashioned manners My

  • - Let me go
mostly they re ratty old dolls and hand me downs that I can no longer hand down We don t have kids and our nephews would laugh in my face if I tried to palm this stuff off on them And my sister would kill me So what to do Last Sunday I screwed up my resolve and threw out a bunch of junk including a miniature table and chair set my granddad made for me out of clothes pins My grandmother made the cushions from the material that covered her mother s couch I hadn t thought about this stuff in years it was broken and covered in dust and was sucking up valuable space so into the garbage it went I was pretty self satisfied change is hard and letting go of once cherished belongings means I m strong You can t get on with the new until you let go of the old Several hours later I was laying in bed and feeling really guilty My granddad made that table with his old man hands and my grandmother lovingly stuffed those little cushions probably sticking herself with pins on the way Now one of those chairs is on display in my living room It takes up about 10 square centimetres in total Yes I dug it out of the garbage shut up What I learned is that you don t have to completely wipe out the past to get on with the future Your past is part of who you are like that clothes pin chair with the 100 year old cushions Just don t get hung up on the whole thing On that note anyone interested in 19 smurfs gently loved I m keeping the hiker Call me Mel One Response to Let me go Kiran

  • - Let me stand next to your fire
some of their serious log jams At one point he actually considered dropping anonymous yellow envelops stuffed with copies of An Honest Living on their desks These are the desperate musings an employee who is sick of his current culture and feels powerless to change it somebody anybody please hit these jerks over their heads so they can see the error in their ways Of course that approach rarely works though I d give it a go in a pinch honestly It s better to start where you have the most control with YOU What are YOU doing that is making work untenable Are you enabling bad behaviour What can YOU do to set a good example to influence others to make it better How about starting the conversation with your own team I was reading this book Share it Spread the word Start a grass fire I m so convinced the basics of An Honest Living lead to success and happiness at work that even if you can t change others in the beginning you should change yourself or at least sharpen some of the edges that have dulled over time Once others see the way you behave and how it affects your ability to get things done they ll sit up and take notice And many of them will want to live a similar kind of life at work too so they ll start mirroring you It s magnetic It s magical It works So get out there and start the fire fan the hell out of it and watch it grow It s way more fun and far more productive than an anonymous yellow envelop Warmer too Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human

  • - Making An Honest Living
mine We started out thinking we wanted to write about our experiences working at a company we both loved but soon realized it was so much more than that It became a mission a pilgrimage a crusade especially as we began to experience all those non Cadbury companies out there in our new roles as consultant and seeking next opportunity me and Luisa respectively by June of 2010 There was just so much to dislike organizations grinding their people their brands and their reputations to increase short term shareholder return It was so myopic and so offensive We knew there was another way because we d experienced it at Cadbury We weren t perfect but we were far better than most and we were successful In just five years we quadrupled our profit margin and our employee engagement scores pushed well past 90 even as we were unleashing tremendous change in the business change that included people losing their jobs including me How did we do it We made An Honest Living Want to know more Check out our manifesto three and a half years in the making An Honest Living be wildly successful without being a jerk At 84 pages it captures our views on what we believe it takes to make an honest living and will take you less than an hour to read Visit our website at anhonesliving ca And follow us on twitter anhonestliving We hope you ll join us on our crusade Mel Leave a Reply Cancel reply Comment Spamcheck Enabled Recent Posts What do dreams actually mean Help us fight human trafficking and then you realize you re a liar too and what to do to fix it I don t wanna know What ever happened to class Recent Comments Mel on I don
