DiskFit and the structure of nearby galaxies I helped develop and currently maintain DiskFit a publicly available code that fits non parametric models to either disk galaxy photometry or kinematic DiskFit excels at finding coherent non circular flows such as those induced by bars and returns a reliable rotation curve in their presence My group is using DiskFit to explore the structure of both nearby well studied galaxies as well as large statistical galaxy samples Extracting HI kinematics from SKA precursor surveys I coordinate a working subgroup for WALLABY the top ranked spectral line survey of the ASKAP telescope to develop a pipeline for extracting kinematic parameters for the thousands of resolved HI detections expected from the survey The pipeline needs to produce reliable homogeneous kinematic parameters resolved to varying degrees and will ultimately be used in other SKA pathfinder surveys e g WNSHS Cold Dark Matter and the HI Content of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies The properties of low mass dwarf spheroidal and dwarf irregular galaxies around the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies reveal important clues about galaxy assembly and evolution Using the world s largest single dish radio telescopes my group has been placing sensitive limits on the

around the world have set out to detect these particles as they pass through the Earth Much of my research focuses on the nature of dark matter halos What are their shapes Is dark matter smoothly distributed or clumpy What effect do dark halos have on galactic dynamics Over the past few years I have worked with John Dubinski at the University of Toronto to refine and expand a code dubbed GalactICS which builds equilibrium models for dist galaxies These models have been used extensively in simulations of galactic dynamics Studies range from simulations of bar formation to galactic mergers Recently Susan Gardner Kentucky Brian Yanny Fermilab Scott Dodelson Fermilab and Chicago Hsin Yu Chen Chicago and I presented evidence suggestive of waves in the Milky Way perpendicular to the Galactic midplane In particular we found North South asymmetries in both the number counts and bulk motions of solar neighbourhood stars using data from the SEGUE survey Other groups then found similar bulk motions in the stars of the RAVE and LAMOST surveys Our paper can be found at here Our hypothesis is that these asymmetries were caused by the interaction of the Galactic disk with a satellite galaxy or
