unprecedented pace and demands that information be accessible anytime anywhere and on virtually any device Security in this ever changing environment is crucial with constant pervasive threats to the information services we use on a regular basis affecting both our personal and work environments Security is an inconvenient but fundamental necessity and practicing good security takes time discipline and money Security is a topic that has gained the spotlight over the last decade due to an increasing number of high profile breaches in various areas of business and personal use This has created a new methodology in how we do business where we must not only deliver new technologies and products we must also ensure that we are doing so securely CBC Radio Canada s Information Technology Department is therefore in the process of developing and deploying an Information Security Risk Management programme in order to deal with the security concerns of today s digital information landscape and more news regarding this programme will be announced in the near future The unique nature of the broadcasting industry may not necessarily require all of the stringent and restrictive security protocols of a financial institution per se however we must still strive to protect our corporate and media information assets as well as the content we provide on publicly available Internet sites This responsibility also extends into the realms of technologies such as Cloud Computing Social and Collaboration platforms and Mobility where public Wi Fi connectivity and Bring Your Own Device 1 initiatives are not only becoming more common but also the new norm Information Security Principles The following shortlist of Information Security Principles describes the high level concepts that must be taken into account in order to safeguard CBC Radio Canada s information assets These principles are well recognised within the security industry and have been adjusted with a broadcasting perspective in mind Media Content Sharing Electronic media content sharing is a natural outgrowth of the mandate of broadcasters to disseminate information An effective Security Policy must support this objective in a transparent manner to ensure that it does not hinder the creative process while maintaining necessary security The goal is to create policies and procedures that will enhance security to meet industry standards in order to prevent breaches all while attempting to keep the creative environment flexible and functional Typically it can be quite a balancing act Access Under Control Considering that all media content is essentially data access controls must be implemented to govern the who what where when and how of access who can access the data what is permitted to be done with the data where can the data reside and where must the user be to access the data when can the data be accessed and how in what formats can it be accessed in order to protect the data from unauthorised modification or disclosure Access to non public information resources should be granted only with an authorised request and on a need to know basis providing the minimal privileges required for an individual to perform their job functions Corporate Media Content CBC Radio Canada s Valuable Strategic Assets Corporate and media systems need to be designed managed and protected in relation to the business criticality of the information to which they provide access Corporate and media content owners must ensure that they adequately and accurately classify corporate and media content in terms of confidentiality integrity and availability This is critical to ensure that information assets are not over protected or under protected Embracing a Risk based Approach Risk should be the determinant of the appropriate level of control to protect information Each business initiative and operational unit should identify its main security risks evaluate their likelihood and propose a risk treatment plan in line with the risk tolerance of CBC Radio Canada A risk assessment mechanism should also be in place in order to identify prioritise and communicate risks to the stakeholders In depth Global Approach to Information Security Corporate and media content flow in various formats electronic paper or verbal through every part of the organisation A

Google The Corporation is about to launch the latest version of its AVID editing workspace in the News Department which will integrate the production tools that we use and expand our production capabilities to tablets and other screens On a daily basis employees are engaged with a complete eco system of content gathering tools that range from high capability professional grade equipment to commodity smartphones Content is available across the Corporation with an ease and utility that facilitates further content creation All of this heralds a revolution a revolution of capability a revolution of choice Five years ago our production environment looked pretty much the way it always has whereas it is currently undergoing a process of continual and profound change Underlying all of this is a technological revolution The power of distributed computing combined with pervasive networking cheap storage and burgeoning bandwidth translates into new capabilities that in turn create opportunities These opportunities allow human beings to connect and to be informed entertained and productive in ways that were unimaginable until recently We find ourselves increasingly in a world where we carry our personal choices with us in a context sensitive environment Our choices follow us and are tuned or tailored to work for us where

seven times in order for it to be assimilated We have been writing about Cloud computing for a while now and we have nearly reached the point where the message will be absorbed Cloud computing makes sense It has its benefits in that it will allow an organisation to react faster and adapt quicker to the ever evolving markets and the technologies that enable adaptation to these markets Cloud computing is being adopted by organisations at an ever increasing rate and it is here to stay CBC Radio Canada now lives in the Google Apps world and the Corporation has done so since the beginning of March 2013 the benefits of Cloud computing that made it an appealing choice for replacing our aging email infrastructure have materialised and allowed the Corporation to replace the email system within a three month period This level of efficiency is largely attributed to the staff that collaborated on this project on a scale never previously witnessed at CBC Radio Canada but it was also made possible by the very nature of a Cloud computing solution not having to worry about infrastructure set up and scaling Nonetheless all of this took some time to prepare in order to ensure that whilst reaping the benefits of Cloud computing we would also comply with our obligations with regards to regulations and other controls that are imposed on public entities such as CBC Radio Canada for the protection of its audience Canada s taxpayers This article will detail our journey into the hidden side of Cloud computing more specifically public Cloud computing the service contracts and risk assessments that need to be conducted and the lessons learned along the way that will inform the way in which we will partake of other Cloud computing services in the future Seeking a Cloud based Solution for our Email Collaboration Platforms In June of 2011 CBC Radio Canada started looking at the market of email and collaboration tools to evaluate the different options available and after having obtained the pertinent information about these options decided to seek a public Cloud based solution for the Corporation s email and collaboration platforms We reviewed several forms of Cloud computing offerings public and dedicated Software as a Service SaaS and Infrastructure as a Service IaaS solutions 1 A thorough analysis was undertaken to assess the risks of Cloud computing in general but also more specifically as it pertained to email and collaboration tools In the end in consideration of our specific requirements we elected to go for a public SaaS solution because email and collaboration platforms have become commodities 2 As a result of this CBC Radio Canada would therefore benefit from most of the new features of the solution at the same rate as the public would However would a public or consumer Cloud service offering be able to help the Corporation meet its compliance obligations This was not only a very good question but also one that was at the heart of several items to evaluate in our assessment Thankfully the public Cloud based email solution market was ripe with solutions aimed at enterprises Consequently a public Request for Proposals RFP was prepared and published targeting the major vendors that offered these kinds of Cloud computing services The term Cloud computing might sound like a recent invention but it is really just another way of contracting computing services with a third party The key to such an endeavour is to lay out your requirements very carefully in your RFP evaluate the responses and select the solution vendor that conforms the most to the criteria that you have established Once that is done you negotiate a contract that will ensure the most advantageous service level to the organisation and support it if problems occur but also include the terms and conditions that will protect it and allow it to maintain its own compliance obligations As you can see there is nothing particularly new about this but it bears restating nonetheless However there is a twist Remember that what makes public Cloud computing enticing for organisations e g growing or decreasing scalability of the solution also limits the ability to negotiate custom terms with the service provider because of the commodity model of the service A typical enterprise agreement for Cloud computing
