  • Inspired by History | Shirley Jean Tucker
    first Mainstage production at Shuswap Theatre The first show of a new millennium should be special I thought so began the search for a Canadian script about a Canadian intrigue I could not find what I was looking for so decided to write my own play about a story that while it might not resonate in the next millennium would at least have artifacts into the next century Research Where to begin On a ferry to Victoria I came across Terry Reksten s excellent book about Francis Mawson Rattenbury the BC architecht who not only designed several landmark buildings such as the Parliament Buildings the Empress Hotel and Crystal Gardens but who was regarded by many Victorians as an infamous scoundrel The Rattenbury saga was real life drama exactly what I was looking for an engaging Canadian story Using Ms Reksten s bibliography as a starting point I read all I could find about Rattenbury his family and friends and the musician originally from Kamloops Alma Clark for whom Rattenbury left his family and with whom he eventually moved to England to remove himself from what had become a most uncomfortable Victoria social scene I interviewed many of the remaining relatives of family and friends particularly the family of fellow architect and rival Sam McLure I would have loved to have followed up with Ms Reksten but by then she was very ill Once again with feeling The facts are of course critical If one stays true to the known facts she can add a little dialogue and perhaps a little more dramatic tension Although truth to tell like Umberto Eco said The facts are a lot more like fiction that the fiction usually manages to be But another critical element is emotion and to ensure that I can endow
